Sanay's 2023 Games

  • They addressed all of the issues that I had with the first one, and improved the combat to boot, so that really helps. They fixed the issues that I had of artificially limiting the abilities, in favor of just having more tech trees, which I think is a great move, I just wish there was more on the tech trees, because they did remove some of the upgrades that were in the first game, which I think was fine, but it did result in me hitting max level about 5-10 hours before I beat the game, I wish there was a little more to that. The combat was a major improvement in this one, adding the parry really helps not kill your momentum the way that the dodge for melee enemies, and this was one of the rare times that I think adding the yellow must parry attacks worked well, however I don't like how late they added the blue dodge only attacks, it felt like too little too late, they were too hard to recognize as well outside of boss fights. I think the story was fine for one of these games, I just feel like the whole venom thing is kind of played out and it was kind of lame that they just did the thing they always do with peter getting mean when he has the symbiote suit, like in general it feels like kind of a lame cliche at this point of a superhero getting turned/mind controlled to be evil for a few minutes and then making the whole rest of the story about that character's guilty/need to make amends. And miles felt like he wasn't supposed to be in this story, like he had his own thing going on that they just did not bother to explore with him. Overall I think this was the worst story in one of these games, but it was still good overall, I kind of wish they hadn't done the exact same format as the first game where they have a big bad and you beat that big bag in act 2 and then there is a whole new much bigger threat for the last third of the game. Also its crazy that they felt the need to improve the traversal mechanics in this game buy such a big leap compared to the last one which already had probably the best feeling open world traversal that I have played, but the wingsuit really took the whole movement to a new level, it really lets you just bridge the swinging in an awesome way. Also adding the swing assist adjustments was great, it made the regular swinging more fun, and I think it addressed the problems that others had with it, I do just wish they gave you some more options up front to adjust though.

  • Yo this game was so good, I played it the way every yakuza/RGG game is supposed to be played, like a TV show 1-2 hours at a time max with ample breaks in between as schedule permits. but this one really had everything that was missing from yakuza 6, while still maintaining a wild and unpredictable plot. It had the side quests that were missing from 6, and interesting mini games/subplots built around the side quests. I also really like the structure of this one and the way that the side quests are implemented. Also did a great job of handling a different structure from the other games the only thing that I felt was lacking was some of the fundamentals of combat were not as good as the yakuza games have been.

  • pretty great game. there were a lot of things that I think could have been done better in the combat and movement, but overall I really loved the characters and the writing was fun. I wasn't that into the musical selection early on, but the later levels vary up the music enough that it brought me in better. Also taking a day or two off really helped me understand the parry and combat mechanics way better, although I initially felt that a lot of it was not very good I came around on it and ended up really loving it overall. I also had an issue with the economy but I think that is also partly due to the game not telling you that you have to redeem the achievements to get the associated reward. I also really wish all of the combo/ beat hits were given from the start and the upgrades were of a different nature instead. Having this game only be 9ish hours long really goes a long way as well, some of the levels were way too long, and the checkpointing was not great for the first half of the game, but it really tightened up in the back half of the game so it ended up working out pretty well I think. The length of the levels does really hurt when going back to do the post game content so I never ended up finishing that.

  • I really love the art styles and really cool puzzle mechanics that are in this one, some of them could have been explained a bit since I was not easily able to intuit them all, but they are all super unique and interesting. Its also kept really nice and short, I beat it in one day, it was about 2.5 hours for me, and it never felt like they were over using any of the mechanics.

  • starts off pretty slow, but once you start getting some of the abilities it gets to be a lot of fun after that. Also the general feel of the game was pretty great on the default difficulty, I put it one above that initially but the load times on respawning were so bad in the early game I had to lower it back down so I wasn't dying as much. only real negatives were the load times and how awful the maps were and how annoying it was to get from place to place, I would have loved to have done more of the exploration, but it was just too annoying and with such little reward (it was only cosmetics). All around really solid, I wish the performance was a bit better could have done without all the stuttering and occasional crashes when enabling HDR.

  • Hell yeah!!! Wooo Fuck yeah dog that was sick.

I really liked the whole main story in this one. the combat was not the best in the series and it was a little lacking in the heat actions department, it felt like they wanted you to use the rage thing all the time instead of the heat actions like in previous games, but it was passable and not very difficult, but it did create some great moments. but all the big moments really worked for me in this game. Also bummed I didn't play this before playing 7, there is a lot of stuff in 7 that is retroactively better for me now. The only bummer was that there were not that many side quests which are some of the most fun parts of these games, this is because of them voicing all of the dialogue, which was nice so I guess it was worth it I think that also made the pacing of the game feel better too. also the fucking secret of onomichi just being a huge battleship was an amazing reveal, like just the dumbest possible thing they could have possibly revealed you love to see it.

  • great little mini games, pretty great that none of them overstay their welcome too, they just show you an idea and make it work a few times. the actual VR implementation, a bit of drifting of the headset and controller and no real roomscale support kind of hold it back, and it is a little janky but still really good all around.

  • pretty cool game, uses all of the PSVR2 features pretty well except for the headset rumble. I wish the checkpointing was a little better and it explained itself better, but the story was fine and the gameplay itself was pretty fun. everything could have been a little better but it was pretty good as a package, only wish they were a little better at showing you where you were climbing. Also the player interaction with npcs was pretty neat for a game like this.

  • started off pretty frustrating, but I got a lot better at the game over time, and it was super fun to be able to drive f1 tracks as they were racing them throughout the few months that I played, I just wish there was more guided content available, it was pretty substantial but I don't really want to play the competitive online part which is where it feels like they want me to go next. The Gacha Mechanics are also really awful, 90% of the time I always get the lowest possible option which always shows in the same position on the screen which is wild that they don't even change that, and another 9% of the time I just get a random part or something for a vehicle I don't even have. and the last 1% is when I get something interesting, but that amounted to like getting 1 million credits once and getting a car once as well, I think I got more than one car but I think I already owned one of the ones that it gave me which was a huge bummer too.

  • Unfortunately this one just did not hit the same way that botw did, I think there was probably just too much in this game, which sucks cause botw is definitely one of my favorite games ever. I also did not care at all for the building mechanics, which seemed to be like the big new thing for this game. I did get around to finishing this one, the end boss fight was pretty cool, the game is just too dang long, the main world was cool and the sky stuff was cool too, but the depths were pretty lame after the intro bit that you need to do down there, there just isn't anything going on down there and its just too big to explore for nothing, and they took away the thing that makes botw cool, like the sight lines to cool things are just non-existent in the depths. Also they added way to many quests too, its just unnecessary at that point.

  • The gameplay seemed like it was very annoying, but the story was very twin peaks and pretty fun, but I barely remember any of the story, I remember more about some of the cooler sequences though

  • Really fun and solid gameplay, its just very unfortunate how much they hate Zangief and all the other grapplers in the game. If he was not a bottom 3 character I think this would probably be one of my top 3 fighting games. At least I like to watch the game though, hopefully that will tide me over until next season.

  • The spongebob dlc for this was pretty great, and only the last level of it felt like too much, the FF7 dlc was pretty good too.

  • playing this with eye tracking in VR is super cool.

  • I wish this game felt better to play and didn't force you to play a ton before you can make your car fun to drive, but then you are already done with the car and moved onto the next one. Also there is a severe lack of variety in the single player content, The penalty and corner cutting really sucks. I wish I could get the simulated fuel and tire ware without having to engage with the shitty penalty system they have. The difficulty stuff also sucks it really just feels like the top 1-3 get faster when you increase the difficulty in general.

  • Real solid game with good bloodborne vibes and some cool mechanics, that unfortunately falls victim to the same issues as most of the recent souls games. **Important to note I did not beat the final boss, it was too tedious so I gave up after a few attempts and just watched the endings** The end of the game is just too long, and it isn't like in a fun way, it just gets tedious. Also the final boss fights just having too much movement compared to the entire rest of the game sucks, because I just couldn't play the way I was for the entire rest ending chapter. They also take a long time to give you all the mechanics, also annoying that they change the location of menus and stuff so frequently, it just creates a lot of unnecessary friction. Also getting stuck on geometry or getting stuck between an enemy and the wall really sucks in these sorts of games. the platforming was better in some ways and a lot worse in others, the way you just lose all forward momentum on a jump really sucks for when you are just on the edge of a platform, but that is just a minor gripe. I also did not find the interest and uniqueness of the combat like other people seemed to.

  • fine game the puzzles were fun and doing one of these in India was pretty cool, but there were too many times where it was not clear where to go forward. also the melee combat was very bad in this one, and having the final fight be a melee fight when the combat feels that bad was not very enjoyable.

  • nice little game, it feels really good and was a fun first game for my switch oled. The music was also really great for how short the game was.

  • The style and music are pretty neat, and the VR mode is pretty good, but it did make me sick sometimes, I kind of got what the game was doing, but I didn't play much of it, it was a bit too tedious to go after all of the goldys and since they affect gameplay mechanic unlocks too they feel hard to skip, but I really like the simple parts of the puzzles and not going after the goldys which added too much friction for me

  • I like the art and the puzzles were interesting, but felt a bit too fussy to me, I think I played about half of it and had my fill with it.

  • totk finally freed me of the curse of having to play this game. hopefully it will be a permanent fix, I did enjoy most of my time with this game, but the gacha stuff really sucks
