HrTbRk_OnE: Best of 2010

List items

  • I can't think of many other games that were able to grab me in the way Mass Effect 2 did. After two playthroughs and 65 hours spent playing it, I still find myself completely enamored by the world and its cast of characters. The story lines and dialogue in this game kept pushing me towards the game's inevitable end, but I didn't care, because I just wanted to see it, and most important of all, it made me care about the members of my team and their fate. Superior in pretty much every way to its predecessor, Mass Effect 2 is by far my favorite game of 2010.

  • Assassin's Creed II was nearly my Game of the Year in 2009, so it's no surprise that AC: Brotherhood is so high on my list. I'm a massive fan of the Assassin's Creed franchise (hell, my cat is named Ezio) and while AC: Brotherhood isn't a vast improvement from the previous game, it refines the formula, adds a few new mechanics and gave me all of Rome as my new playground. I spent hours traversing the rooftops and alleys of Rome collecting every feather and flag, buying all the real estate possible, and leveling up my Assassins. AC: Brotherhood is definitely deserving of it's #2 ranking on this list.

  • Super Meat Boy and I have a horrible, horrible, abusive relationship. Super Meat Boy has repeatedly kicked my ass harder than any other game in recent memory, but be that as it may, it didn't stop me from repeatedly playing a level 200 times before finally completing it. Granted, the game has brought me closer to a controller smashing moment than ever before. However, the sense of satisfaction felt upon completion was fantastic. The level design was incredibly simple, yet complex, and the controls were simple enough to pick up and play, yet required a level of finesse to progress through the game that was nice to see. As frustrating as Super Meat Boy can be at times, there's no denying it's excellence.

  • Fallout 3 is janky as hell. It froze up on me over a dozen times in my playthrough, requiring a hard reset of the console, characters would clip through geometry and get stuck, glitches would occur that would render entire quests to cease to be completable, hell, I could go on for days. However, despite all its flaws, Fallout: New Vegas had me completely immersed in the story and world for the duration of my 27 hour quest. While the core mechanics and gameplay remained intact, the storytelling and writing were fantastic, far superior to Fallout 3. In addition, the characters were unique and left a lasting impression, and the new environment and weapons, along with small improvements such as real iron sights in first-person mode made it a far more pleasurable experience in comparison to it's predecessor.

  • Is it perfect? Definitely not, but Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game charmed the pants off me within minutes of my first time playing it. The old school aesthetic, the absolutely charming chiptune soundtrack and "River City Ransom" style gameplay kept me going back to this one time and time again, be it for solo play or breaking it out with a few friends.
