Skyrim is kind of a big deal, here's why!

If anyone played Oblivion the dungeons didn't feel fresh, it was the same textures, enemies and overall layout for the majority of the dungeons in the game. From what I have been told Oblivion's dungeons were the responsibility of one person, with Skyrim Bethesda made a dedicated team of people to work specifically on dungeons and it worked out very well.

Reasons dungeons in Skyrim are awesome

  1. Unique feel, a lot of the dungeons feel unique and also offer their own story, combined with the books, NPC banter and various types of enemies this is one of the best reasons to actually explore in Skyrim. (Besides meeting sexy Nord Women)
  2. All dungeons circle back around from the end to the start, no longer do you have to run all the way back to the start past all the bodies you are responsible for. Instead open up a door which is always blocked or barred by something and you'll be out of that dungeon in a jiffy.
  3. The sounds, just listen to the sound of the dungeons when you are in one, it really sounds like you're in somewhere different then the normal world of Skyrim which is a great step towards realism.

Now the one point which Skyrim that I felt was lacking was the shouting system, You're meant to a Dragonborn and you run around killing dragons, skeletons, wizards, red guards and even villagers but the shouting system just felt bad. The reason is pretty simple when using a shout the majority do not feel powerful or epic, they feel like regular magic spells with longer cooldowns. This should have been different, shouts should be powerful, after all Jarl Ulric apparently shouted at the previous leader and killed him which I can honestly say has never happened with my shouts.

Best Shouts

  1. Call Dragon
  2. Storm Call
  3. Unrelenting Force
  4. Fire Breath

The one really strong point that Skyrim has going for it are it's dragons, the fights with dragons feel difficult on all difficulty settings and can be completed with a various amount of gameplay styles. If you love running in and smacking Dragons with your swords you can do that, however you can also shoot them from afar with your Bow or even shout them out of the sky. The magic system I found is best used for summoning ranged allies that can hit the dragon due to how amazing the AI's aim is. The dragon battles in Skyrim are amazing, they are by far one of my favorite parts of the game.

Rawr! - PurePwnage The TV Series

Been a while since I wrote about this, I'll keep this short. The PurePwnage TV Series started 3 weeks ago, currently their are a total of 3 episodes online at
http://www.showcase.ca/video/ I do not know if they work outside of Canada but the new series seems to be staying true to the spirit and humor that was in the Internet Series.

Episode 3 provided a glimpse of FPS_Doug I bet we all wish we never saw.

The iPad Is Stupid! (Rant Blog)

Haha, people didn't like my last rant blog what do you think they'll say about this one?, I'll keep it simple, the whole reason I bought an iPod touch was because it

A) Fit in my pocket
B) Offered a great HAND-HELD operating system
C) The App Store
D) Was something I could take with me to various places where I couldn't bring a Laptop or Desktop PC

The Plus

1) Now everything isn't bad, the iPad does have a nice design and it's visually appealing just like most of Apples productions, see for yourself, these images are provided by Ars Technica see the First Look here

2) The battery life is roughly 10 hours of HD Video watching (720p) before you need to recharge the iPad again, this isn't great but HD is something I've wanted on my iPod Touch for a while, I'm sure this is probably going to be the biggest selling feature for the iPad,

Steve Jobs: "My iPad can play HD Video for 10 hours before I need to charge it"

Consumer: "That's great, my Netbook that cost me half as much as the iPad can watch HD video, Play Games, Torrent Porn and Blog on Giantbomb all at the same time for 15 hours"

Steve Jobs: "Shit"

Onto the flaws

1) You can only use Apples iPhone / iPod touch OS on the iPad - While this won't seem like a big deal to a lot of people given that most e-reader / tablet style devices limit you to certain Operating Systems (Kindle, etc) their is an enormous lack of features for a device that's nearing a Netbook, the iPhone OS only allows you to use one Application at a time and also doesn't allow Flash / Silverlight to be used on the device.

2) The Price - This one should be obvious, the prices for the iPad are above, what my issue is you can buy a Netbook or even a Mid-Ranged Notebook for the same price as the overpriced iPad, this has long been one of my complaints for all of Apples products, we're not all living on Steve Jobs yearling earnings here.

3) Current Apps - So the applications this device will use are already in the iPhone / iPod Touch appstore and while theirs some great applications when you think about the applications that are denied (Google Voice?) Apple is really forcing you to use what they want you to use on their iPad.

4) It's going to be hacked - Took a few weeks for the iPod touch and iPhone I give this device a month or so until someone Hacks it, Runs Windows 95, Makes instructions to do it and causes my iPad to explode.

A lot of these may be speculation or the fact that I'm a Windows Fanboy but overall the idea of having an over-sized iPod Touch seems ridiculous to me, feel free to fill me in on another I'm missing or try to change my opinion but I feel that the iPad is a horrible purchase for a lot of people but it'll probably sell extremely well.

Avatar - Most Successful Film Ever Or Is It? (Rant Blog)

So I knew this was going to happen, I saw the movie, I didn't think it was that great but it did have some great 3D Effects. Now most people won't care about this but Avatar becoming the most successful film in terms of gross money earned ever is kind of bullshit, if the tickets didn't cost $13.00 - $17.00 per ticket it wouldn't be so successful, basically what I mean is in terms of Ticket Sales Avatar has only sold 76,421,000 total tickets which places it in the 26th position for most ticket sales,

1 "Gone With the Wind" (1939) 202,044,600
2 "Star Wars" (1977) 178,119,600
3 "The Sound of Music" (1965) 142,415,400
4 "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" (1982) 141,854,300
5 "The Ten Commandments" (1956) 131,000,000
6 "Titanic" (1997) 128,345,900
7 "Jaws" (1975) 128,078,800
8 "Doctor Zhivago" (1965) 124,135,500
9 "The Exorcist" (1973) 110,568,700
10 "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937) 109,000,000
11 "101 Dalmatians" (1961) 99,917,300
12 "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) 98,180,600
13 "Ben-Hur" (1959) 98,000,000
14 "Return of the Jedi" (1983) 94,059,400
15 "The Sting" (1973) 89,142,900
16 "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) 88,141,900
17 "Jurassic Park" (1993) 86,205,800
18 "The Graduate" (1967) 85,571,400
19 "Star Wars: Episode I" (1999) 84,825,800
20 "Fantasia" (1941) 83,043,500

So realistically when you think about it Avatar earning as much money as much as Titanic (which is 6th place for total sales) with around 40 thousand less tickets sold is bullshit, the movie wasn't good, it was decent, the only reason it's sold so much is because of the outrageous 3D Ticket prices and Word-Of-Mouth.

PS: Avatar cost 280 Million to make
PPS: If Gone With The Wind was released today as a brand new movie taking an inflation factor into account it would have grossed $2,310,228,916 in total, but all it actually grossed was $191,749,00.

Legal or not it was extremely rude and mean for Showcase to limit Pure Pwnage's viewing audience to Canada only, but I guess that's why being an Internet TV Show going to real TV is all about. 2010 is HERE!!!! - Most Anticipated Games / Other Crap

Other Crap First

So my bad I didn't update this blog for a whole month, my last blog was about some Crazy Grandma freaking out, it gathered a lot of attention, it has 39 comments and I'm guessing a few hundred views here on GIantbomb. But I'll just get to the point, there's a lot of good games being released in 2010 (Hopefully) below is my list of games that I'm most excited for in 2010.

I lied, my Christmas was fun, didn't get much this year but that's to be expected, I'm nearing the age where socks is a luxury so I wasn't expecting a lot anyway, new years was boring, had a beer and sat at home playing Modern Warfare 2 because I've had no time to play it yet and I've owned the game for almost two months.

Also I setup my Xbox Live account, I'm currently rocking out with a total of 4 friends so add me! -  Y0URL4STN1GHT  (The O is a Zero)

Most Anticipated games of 2010

Well if you've read some of my other blogs you'd know that I'm interested in The Old Republic, I guess that's why it's my sixth most anticipated game this year,

6. The Old Republic

So I've been a fan of Star Wars for along time, I've played KOTOR / KOTOR 2 hundreds of times and I even played The Force Unleashed (I didn't like it very much) but what has me interested in this game is Bioware, it's their first MMO, it's going to be a Star Wars MMO and it's not going to be SWG, I'm interested in the stories, each class having a different story would mean that TOR could potentially last me for a few years if I complete every story.

Pros

Star Wars (Who doesn't love Star Wars besides Trek fans?)
Sith Warrior
Pay-To-Play (Keeps all the young brats out assuming they don't beg their parents for money, there's been some rumors TOR could be going Micro-transaction though)

Cons

First Bioware MMO
Star Wars (Theirs nothing unique / creative about using an old story / lore from Star Wars anymore)

5. Fable 3

Bowerstone (Fable III concept art)

This is somewhat of an obvious choice, I enjoyed Fable, Fable: TLC and Fable 2, while Fable 2 didn't deliver as much content as I'd hoped it was still an enjoyable experience, Fable in my opinion is one of the better RPG's on the Xbox 360 and it's been enjoyable to replay many times however with as little information as there is for Fable 3 it's hard to say if this will be the Modern Warfare of the Call of Duty Series or just another Sonic game.

Pros

Open World
RPG
Interesting crap no one cares about (Scarring after dying in Fable 2 anyone?)

Cons

Dogs (They killed mine in the last game)
Fantasy
Very little information about it

4. Alpha Protocol

Based on my cons from Fable 3 you should be able to figure out why I'm excited for this, if not it's simple, this is something new, it doesn't have a 2, 3, 7, etc at the end of it's name and it's also an RPG (of sorts). To be honest I haven't really looked into Alpha Protocol very much but from what I've seen it looks like it's going to be an amazing game, it has some James Bond style CIA work with some (from what I can see) Mass Effect style leveling. Regardless of how this game is hyped I'll be at least renting it, I've seen enough for this game to spark my interest and I'm eagerly awaiting the release of it.

Pros

Original title / series
Spy
RPG
Some Canadian Developers (Represent!)

Cons

None

3. Bioshock 2

So I'm sure you've all played Bioshock, if you haven't you should the game was amazing, I've been interested in Bioshock 2 since I went golfing in Bioshock 1 and the features / videos I've seen already look amazing, being able to play as a Big Daddy is definitely going to be an interesting experience that I think even Micheal Jackson could enjoy (too soon?). I'm also interested to see what exactly Multiplayer in Bioshock is going to be, to be honest I can't picture Big Daddies vs Little Sisters in CTF or a bunch of people trying to protect Andrew Ryan while another team tries to assassinate him but I'm still interested in how this game is going to turn out.

Pros / Cons are being cut out from here on, to many to list for the next few games.

2. Mass Effect 2

It's almost here!!!!!

Where to begin, Mass Effect was amazing, I had a blast exploring all of the planets and just doing the boring parts of other games like walking around and talking to people, I'll be honest this is probably the only game I didn't press B / Cancel the dialog  with NPC's because it was very real. I can play Mass Effect right now and still find interesting or funny moments in the dialog of the game, sure it's nothing like Fallout 3 where I was tricked into a kinky threesome with some crazy guy but it was enjoyable throughout the game. Mass Effect 2 is also improving on the skills / classes of Mass Effect which I'm extremely happy about, one of the faults Mass Effect 1 had was it's skills / classes, the game was extremely easy if you played as a soldier and offered no challenge throughout and all the other classes had lame skills, but with Mass Effect 2 I think I'll actually play the Paragon, something about being able to dash through walls / objects towards an enemy / target is appealing to me.

Mass Effect 2 is also being released soon, I'll probably wait a month or so after release to buy it (Sold Out at most places around here) but if anyone want's to send me a copy I won't stop you :P.

1. Half-Life 3 / Episode 3

Concept art for Half-Life 3
There's been no news about the Half-Life series for a while, this is how Valve works though, just when you forget about a game / franchise BAM Team Fortress 2, I'm hoping for a 2010 release for Half-Life 3 or Episode 3 (assuming their still doing the episode stuff)  but I'll settle for some news. I can't count the days I've played Half-Life / Half-Life 2, I've played it on my 360, I've played it on my PC, I've modded it, I've played other games people made based on the HL2 / Orange Box Engine and I'm hoping it sees a release this year.

That means you better release it, hear me Gabe?

Well anyway, I've had a blast in 2009, played a lot of good games, smoked a lot of good uhhh never-mind, I hope you all have a wonderful 2010, I know I will, so many games this year will be awesome, but their's a few I didn't feel like mentioning above, check out for the other anticipated games below in my not so anticipated anticipated games list.

1. Natural Selection 2
2. Final Fantasy 13
3. Final Fantasy 14
4. Guild Wars 2
5. Starcraft 2
6. Diablo 3
7. Fallout: New Vegas
