I'm glad that you posted this in a news story on the site, Patrick. It's important that it's condemned by the site as a whole and not just you and Alec in the Bombing the AM podcasts.
Have training nights, where people who are entirely new to the community but found it impenetrable beforehand can be educated about the basics of competitive play. To casual viewers, a fighting game is about hitting the other guy with your moves as much as possible, and while that's technically true, the nuances of what it means to play competitively are almost a whole new game. So my suggestion would be to have a few experienced people go over the basics of what terms mean, and maybe a break down a match to show exactly what's happening, then have the newbies there play against each other and have the experienced dudes give them tips on what they did wrong and what they need to do.
