Welcome to My world . . .

I'll be using this area to let GB readers know of the various articles, opinion pieces, reviews and previews aimed at the Xbox 360 platform.

I'm one of a 13 person team that help keep the site (XboxOZ360-gamer) going which is all volunteer based atm. Our aim is a simple one

1) Supply unbiased news items, opinion pieces and reviews on not only the 360, but gaming in general without the need to backstab, belittle or be fanboiish about it.

2) Not to rehash news with a small 5 line snippet just to lead you to another source which you could have found elsewhere. That does nothing for our credibility and reputation. Which is growing steadily for just that reason. Sure, we could do that, and possibly gain more traffic. But that traffic may never come back. Currently we hold a solid 75% RSS feed to visitors ratio. Which is great for a small site.

3) To help broaden and expand the Xbox 360 Community within Australia and New Zealand, and then naturally globally. But the main aim is forour own territories. We have gained MS approval now as an Official Contributing Community Site and one of just five sites on the Xbox.com.au Home page in the community section, something we've very proud of actually.

4) To provide the reader with an opportunity to create a Xbox 360 fansite and even Podcast in time to come, that will have them connected to the XCN . .

So with this in mind, here is an interesting slant of one of our writers view on Brothers In Arms: Hells Highway. Not so much as a preview, but a look at how serious games need to be, or need not be. This writer has also recently been taken in by the Australian X360 Magazine as a contributing writer with his first article appearing in this months recent release about the R18+ rating here in Australia. Something we will be covering in greater detail later.

War Games: How Serious Is Too Serious?

by dkpatriarch:

War often isn't about Victory - but about loss and grief.

I can still remember how sick I felt when I first watched Saving Private Ryan in the cinema. The D-Day scene and later when the German hushes as he slowly plunges the knife into the U.S. soldier shocked me like no other film before it. I had seen plenty of war movies and even later movies with more visceral gore like Gladiator, but there was something that made me hate this movie for making me feel so weak in the stomach.

War as glorious, war as adventurous, war as tragedy, war as a bonding experience, war as necessity, war as patriotic: I had seen and understood all this. War as pure, unadulterated, horrifying hell, where basic survival is the only prize, and sometimes even that prize comes at a cost to humanity or sanity, was something too uncomfortably shown in that film for me. There had been glimpses in Apocalypse Now and Platoon, but to me this was the most disturbing side of war; the visuals and sound made me feel like I was there suffering with them.

Now Brothers In Arms: Hell’s Highway is seeking to similarly grab the game player by the guts, showing the rapid descent into hell, both physically and emotionally, that war brings. It too uses World War II as its backdrop, but unlike the victories we have grown used to in previous war shooters (with the exception of parts of COD4), it shows what happens when all is lost and soldiers buckle under the pressure. It will also show an unprecedented amount of gore for a World War II game, a genre traditionally used to restraint.
