So the new update to the site today moved the status bar up north and it looks way better. I like having the bottom of my page back.
 
However, I think it still has room for improvement, so I did a quick mockup of a version which has some more info, wastes less space, and has a bigger avatar.
 

Honestly, I think the new setup is pretty damn fugly. The old bar was effective and I got used to an insignificant amount of the screen being used for it.

I'd like the old bottom bar over anything at the top, but only if Chrome wasn't so annoying with the status bar that pops up at the bottom. As for the top designs though, I'm guess I'm kinda alright with the current one. At first I thought it looked out of place, mostly because of the level font, but I guess it's fine. Your design does look a little better spacing-wise. Cleaned up a little bit, I think you might have something there.

I would recommend that it be moved to the left of the screen, next to the Giantbomb logo.

I can't see a thing through them image artifacts. In all seriousness, your mock-up isn't bad. It's just that the new bar is fine, and since it's personal to each user there's no real need to make the avatar bigger or anything. Unless you're one of those folks that juggles, like, fifty accounts, and you really need to see which one you're using and you can't make it out from the miniature image.

You seem to have the same problem that some others (like me) have, where your Quest progress bar isn't showing up. It's actually there for other people, pretty much where you suggest it goes.

I prefer it at the bottom. I liked that it followed as you scrolled down. Now I'm constantly scrolling back to the top and Its very frustrating. Plus it makes my finger that I use to scroll with hurt.

Even though I hated the bottom bar because the chrome thing, it was damn convenient.

I don't know what's wrong with your's but the bar is actually meant to be there. Still, I like your idea of having the 1000/2000XP thing and moving the lvl to have a bigger avatar. I posted a image of what it looks like with the bar there.

I prefer it like it is now to be fair, looks nicer. However, i'm not a huge fan of quests so don't need all that information. 
 
Also why the need for a bigger avatar? It's your avatar, you know what it looks like :P

the bottom bar straight up sucked. it was always covered up by the url info thing when you hover over a link in chrome. and whenever I tried to click on shit i would go one pixel too far and the app dock would pop up on osx.  
 
I love the new one! its out of the way doesn't take up space on the window. and it reminds me of a PS3. 

I preferred the old one... worked fine in Opera.
