Zorak's Game of The Year 2014

Why am I filling this out? I HAVE NO IDEA. HERE ARE GAMES IN LIST FORM.

List items

  • Bayonetta 2 is a game that probably shouldn't exist. It's bizarre that Nintendo even took a risk here but hey: it's win-win for us, as Bayonetta 2 is incredible. It's over the top, completely stupid, and amazingly fun to play. Folks act like it's plot is incomprehensible, but that's not really the case. It's knowingly stupid and that's all that really matters.

  • The PC release hit in January 2014 and was still one of my favorite games of this year. Sorry this year. Revengeance was just a blast that even after beating it has eaten a lot of my mental real-estate since. The soundtrack is appropriately fantastic butt metal.

  • Hey, the Wii U release added new stuff and came out this year! It's still a fantastic game and better than most other things that came out this year.

  • Show me your moves. Smash Bros is still a great game to play with friends, and I hope Nintendo supports it over the coming year. Just... let Sakurai heal his arms.

  • Shovel Knight could have been just a retread of platforms of old, nostalgia and nothing more. Instead it's straight up just a fantastic current-day 2D platform that uses its nostalgic influences to enhance the experience.

  • The plot is AWFUL, the implementation into the setting is half-assed, and there's little motivation to engage much of the content, but it just plays so damn good and the Nemesis system is inherently just fantastic that Shadow of Mordor 2 has he potential to be incredible, and I hope they use this system in other titles.

  • Dark Souls 2 is far, far worse than Dark Souls. While the online experience is far better, the actual game design it's integrated into leaves a lot to be desired. With that being said: Dark Souls 2 still ate dozens of my hours and was a ton of fun.

  • Transistor marries great atmosphere with fun tactical combat. Even though it's story details were too vague and understated, and the overall experience was less enjoyable than Bastion, Transistor is still fantastic. I leave that soundtrack spinning quite a lot.

  • I came into this year completely not looking forward to Inquisition at all. I had loved Dragon Age: Origins and had been annoyed by both DA2 and EA's recent Origin shenanigans. But Inquisition is a thoroughly solid game. It's not as audacious or as hard-edged as Origins had been, and the actual core gameplay isn't great, but it's still one of the better games this year. I look forward to replaying it after someone makes a mod to take out the shittier quests.

  • Captain Toad is a very reduced experience but it's still great.
