I played through inFamous Last year but totally skipped Prototype. I have seen some gameplay videos but I'm really on the fence about this one.
In short, is it worth about 25 bucks?
Prototype
Game » consists of 11 releases. Released Jun 09, 2009
Prototype is an open-world action game from Radical Entertainment. You are Alex Mercer, a human transformed by a deadly virus into a virtually invincible killing machine.
Is Prototype worth picking up?
No, not really. Story is bad, gameplay is OK, but it loses its charm later in the game. Boss fights were pretty much fun, but I'd suggest you rent it rather than buy it.
It is a pure action game, with ton and tons of stuff happening at the same time (which kinda makes up for the sub-par graphics). It is also very gorey, so that's a plus if you're into that. I'd say that a decision to get it may depend on how much you liked inFamous since the games hit nearly opposite pleasure centers despite being similar on the very surface (suddenly powered up normal people and open worlds). If you absolutely loved inFamous with a passion, Prototype will likely bore you; it's more based on the "blow shit up then make folks bleed!" school of gaming thought, with little attention being paid to the soul of the game. It also has a very obvious lack of polish compared to a AAA exclusive like inFamous. There's lots of videos and reviews of the game by now, so a little research might help make the decision easier.
And now for my own opinion: Prototype is, without exaggeration, the worst game I have tried to play this generation (I couldn't stand it for longer than about 90 minutes before giving up). It was like a game for people who enjoy blood and explosions so much that everything else becomes unimportant.
But hey, it's $25. If there's nothing you want in like a month or two and nothing on sale on Steam that might be cool and the game interests you, why not?
" @Akeldama said:Thats the thing about them discs. Tasty going down, painful coming out." @Abyssfull said:I'm no doctor but that sounds like the best route to take. "" @Akeldama said:Think ill just stop eating my discs. They are terrible on the insides. "" I would say no. Game left a terrible taste in my mouth. "Try it with salt next time. "
How about $5? I picked up Singularity (I'm kind of a sucker for time travel & alternate history sci-fi tech) and found out that they have an offer to get a "free" copy of Prototype if you pay for shipping ($4.95). Do I really want to curse myself with Prototype? Sounds like from the Bombcast, Ryan wasn't all that hot even though I did see cartoon Brad pumping his fist when I clicked through the Prototype page.
It's worth $5 maybe even $10, think Hulk: Ultimate Destruction in a hoodie with more powers, vehicles and guns.
I wouldn't pay more than 10 or 15 for it. I really loved it, had a ton of fun playing it, but unless you're entertained by just running around mashing up civilians it will lose it's appeal after a while. I guess I should put it this way - it's a lot like Crackdown but with a narrative - it's tons of fun, if you can make that fun happen. I had a blast every time I got a new power but eventually you'll unlock them all.
'The Web of Intrigue' was really cool by the way - little 5second video clips of memories you get by eating specific targets - it was a great way to add to the narrative, almost like Audio Logs in Bioshock, but more stylish.
No I regretted it, even if I paid alot more for it before, it's not worth more than $5. Infamous is better in everyway.
I don't have a PS3, so I can't compare the two games, but having played Prototype, I'd say 15-20 wouldn't be a bad price. Just be aware that a lot of the game is finding interesting ways to blow shit up using your powers.
I'll also say that more than once I found myself thinking that this was the best spiderman game I had played in a while.
It's a great game. It's a much better Superhero Takes on the City game than InFamous. MUCH better at almost every turn, with the sole exception of the last boss battle (which is really kind of silly when you scale it against the rest of the game).
Think of it like a cross between GTA and Hulk : Ultimate Destruction. It has missions and minigames, but the real fun is the sandbox nature of the game and just how OP you can eventually get to be. It has some RPG scaling aspects wrt weapons, skills and armour too and you get to be creative with almost all of your attack types too. My favourite thing in the game is raise alerts and get Apache gunships on my tail and then hijack them in the air (yes, in the air) and park them all over the city. As it's a sandbox, the world stays static between saves, so as long as you don't go to the next mission, each vehicle will be where you left it. I had one game where I had a heli parked on each roof of each building just for the halibut.
Ace fun.
if you didnt play infamous first, then yes i would say yes.
But since you have already played Infamous, No. Stay away from that game.
