When I finished Rebel Galaxy, I thought, "I'm not quite sure why I played that for 24 hours. The amount of missions is barebones, all the systems felt the same, and combat was simple & easy. Much like buses, you can be waiting for what feels like years for one to come along and then several show up all at once. For years the space trading and combat simulation game had little representation on PC and even less on console. Then a couple of months ago Elite: Dangerous got its full release on Xbox One and just last month Starpoint Gemini 2 was ported onto the console. Now after a few months of only being available on PC, Rebel Galaxy makes its way to consoles and it would seem the best...

If you’ve ever prayed that Firefly would be turned into an action-packed space sim, just pour yourself a tall glass of bourbon and strap in, pardner. Rebel Galaxy from Double Damage Games is the space shooter for the fans of Joss Whedon's Firefly who thought the writing and characters were too complex. While the writing is just passable the gameplay is simple in a good way. The player's ship is stuck on a single horizontal plane and 2/3 of the weapons either auto-fire or auto-target but instead of oversimplifying the game it focuses the experience on maneuvering. Action games set in space tend to, at least from my point of view, fall into two categories; simulation heavy or too arcadey. As someone with an interest in space games, I’ve been after a game that falls somewhere in the middle of this spectrum while leaning towards the arcadey side, but such a balance is a pipe dream. Having pages of complex mechanics takes away the fun and asks me to resemble more of an actual space captain, but having too little makes me feel like I’m not in a spa...

The Universe is supposedly infinite. Expanding for eternity. Within it, many galaxies. Stars. Planets. Rebel Galaxy feels like a game trying to capture the unique perspective of what it would be like to be a galactic pirate. Solar systems are the new ocean.
