Shade of Aran is the spirit of Nielas Aran, the father of the powerful wizard Medivh. The Shade resides in Karazhan, which was maintained by Medivh before his death. He is an optional boss encounter in Karazhan, a level 70 raid instance introduced in World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade.
Basic spells
- Frostbolt, Fireball, Arcane Missiles: These spells cause Frost, Fire, and Arcane damage, respectively, to single targets.
- Chains of Ice: Roots a target in place for 10 seconds.
- Conflagarate: Damages and disorients an enemy target and up to three other enemies in range of the initial target.
- Counterspell: Interrupts the spellcasting of any targets within a 10 yard radius around Shade of Aran.
- At 40% health, Shade of Aran will summon four water elementals to attack the raid.
- When Shade of Aran's mana reaches 20%, he will Polymorph the entire raid, and begin drinking to restore his mana. When he finishes drinking, he will cast Pyroblast, causing Fire damage to every raid member.
Special spells
Shade of Aran only casts these abilities once every 30-35 seconds.
- Flame Wreath: Creates firey auras around three random raid members. Any movement within these auras will cause all raid members to instantly take Fire damage.
- Blizzard: Creates an blizzard which moves in a circular pattern around the room. Players standing in the blizzard take Frost damage and have their movement speed reduced.
- Magnetic Pull: Shade of Aran pulls every raid member to the center of the room, and slows them immediately afterwards, reducing movement speed. The boss will then spend ten seconds casting Arcane Explosion, which causes heavy damage to all targets in a 20 yard radius around the Shade.
