Giant Bombcast 12-13-2011

We work out the kinks in Vinny's diabolical plan to clone the Beatles, talk Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning with Brad, reminisce about rap tapes, and generally spend way, way too much time discussing the Spike TV VGAs on this week's Bombcast!

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

I didn't think this up, but a great tagline for the Star Wars Galaxies ending would be: "Not like sith."

Comparing JP1 to JP2 is kind of silly. JP1 is an incredible film top to bottom. A stone cold classic. JP2 is goofy and kind of dumb, but (in my opinion) in the best way possible. There are some legitimately great scenes in it (anything with the two T-Rexes, anything with the raptors) and I think the end part in San Diego is good, stupid fun.

The real bad movie is JP3. That movie is just boring. Bland action, stupid characters, no fun. Blegh.

And that's all I have to say about Jurassic Park!

I sort of wanted Jurassic park to be good. Oh well. Off subject but I really like the Trine 2 QL today..nice game, I'm going to try it. As for Zelda and slow starts, I don't know if Zelda deserves the excuse, but most games feel compelled for a bit of tutorial..they want those new players.. Make better games, that is kind of it, yeah straight on and true.

Well, that is the way I feel about Skyrim to be honest.

Also, the game actually isn't losing pointing calibration, because it isn't using the sensor bar for pointing. It is using the motion plus so when you go to a menu it is assuming the direction you are pointing the controller is the actual direction of the screen. It makes it so you don't constantly have to worry about the sensor bar but just make sure you are comfortable showing the direction of the screen.

@cyraxible: Nah, just explaining the calibration thing, because it had confused me for the first couple of times I used it.

If you mean my feelings on Skyrim, then I think it is a great great great great game, but people pour a bit too much praise when there are serious issues with it.

you know how when you notice something completely neglible and just totally unimportant but once you do it bothers the living hell out of you?

When Vinny started describing the opening of Zelda he said "Like" about 12 times and then Patrick followed up with a few and so on and so forth, and it became all I could hear XD I had to stop the podcast and walk away for an hour in order to stop noticing it and enjoy again :P

Great bombcast though as always :D

I love how people forget that the first two films were books first. Awesome books at that. It's the same with Lord of the Rings, it seems that so many people are fans of these franchises but never bothered to read the god damned books. Hey, wake up the LotR movies sucked compared to the books. The first Jurassic Park movie was good, but paled in comparison to the book, the second one was okay but the second book was actually pretty good, despite Chrichton being semi-strongarmed into writing it. But what do we remember from these series, not the source material, but the first good thing they spawned and all the crap that happened after they earned tons of money. People $uck.

I really think that for anyone who wants to get into MOBA games, or even just DOTA 2, it would be better to just start with LOL and transition to DOTA 2 once it is released. Disregarding the communities, I think LoL is probably the most accessible MOBA because it is the easiest to understand. Everything is simplified in LoL, and I feel like those simplifications make the game much more enjoyable while maintaining some depth for those who want to continue playing. Once you get a grasp of LoL, I feel like it would make learning DOTA 2 much easier. DOTA 2 is a faster game and things get a out of control faster in that game, and I think that could easily crush any beginer's desire to learn how to play. Just a thought.

Even if you dont want to play against others, it still might be good to just download LoL and play a few bot matches with others or by yourself just to get a good idea of the core mechanics of the game.

Oh yeah, we really needed to see Bilbo walking to Rivendell for 20 fucking minutes. Or how about having Faramir completely ignore the threat and malice of the Ring? But really, the gravest failing was not having a totally tangential Scouring of the Shire sequence, which ultimately added nothing and negated the whole build-up and eventual climax of the whole story.

I get that Tolkien was an influential writer, and his works, if nothing else, have some amazing depth, and the core plot is fantastic. But they are poorly fucking written. He wrote them totally from a historical perspective, not a narrative one, and as such, they are a fucking chore to read.

This is what EA has done to many companies before it's not like it's a surprise. While we're talking C&C what ea is doing to bioware is what they did to westwood.

So I thought "hey, this is over three hours!" thinking it would totally last me for my drive home for the Christmas break but by the time I actually had my stuff packed and got into the car I looked and only had twelve minutes left and couldn't believe it. The book didn't depict Faramir being some how immune to the ring.  He was simply a negation of Elrond's assertion that men is a failure of a species, and overcame the temptation.  The Scouring of the Shire was meant to depict the growth of the hobbits as a species, dragged kicking and screaming into a world where they can no longer hide behind the swords and shields of men, isolated from the world.  How you felt it negated the climax of the story is beyond me.

You're right, they were written from a historical perspective given conciet of the entire thing being a journal written by the Hobbits to record the events of the story.  And I fucking loved it and found nothing chore-like about it.

And also, I believe Tolkien saw LotR as a way to realise the Elven language. Which.. well, success!

I will agree that the 50 first pages of the first book is a bit of a chore, but it's followed by another thousand pages of epic.

Really? EA, maybe, but Bioware is a topic they usually fall back into their annoying habit of desperately trying to appear above the complaining rabble, on. From the ME3 character reveal, Dragon Age 2, and ME3 having multiplayer, they've always tried to (directly and indirectly) belittle us whiners expressing the concerns that everyone else now sees months later. It's actually an amusing juxtaposition, hearing that depressed attitude toward Bioware after trying to have it both ways on the VGAs discussion.

I appreciate that Jeff doubled back and corrected his "we" to a "they". Among others in the press, the Weekend Confirmed guys sometimes pull the "we", and i have yet to see them actually make a game.

What's depressing is the stuff those companies get up to. Specifically EA.

The historical relevance of Tom Bombadil was needing the, what felt like, hundreds of pages dedicated to his character. I won't even mention the measure of importance this encounter had on the remaining plot of the story.

Given how the sword of the barrow-barrow downs was specifically designed to help slay the nazgul due to the lineage of those buried there, that side story was very much intentional.  Tom Bombadil's character himself though is a mystery.  For all of his very specific and vivid descriptions of people and places, Tolkien intentionally left exactly who and what Tom Bombadil is blank (intentionally by his own words.)  My guess is he was meant to be a reference to another short story that Tolkien never had a chance to put to paper.

I thought they were hallucinating throughout the entire Bombadil "sequence" and was literally waiting for the 'and then they woke up' part. When they left I was almost horrified that it was all considered an authentic experience.
