The Kingdom Hearts talk is killing me. Its not a convoluted story. Y'all just didn't play the side games which are where all the really important story beats are at. Also Birth By sleep is better than KH1 or KH2

I'm so fucking ready for another Ace Combat, really interested to find out how it is in VR because that sounds just perfect if it's done well.

I think the games I'm most excited for (atleast for the first half of the year) are the new Trials game, Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil 2.

Probably not a good business (or creative) decision to keep the important story beats to the games that a fewer number of gamers will play. "to understand the next mainline game, play the spinoffs" = generally not a good idea, especially considering the amount of sales I am sure SE wants.

@binarygod: I don't think its a big ask to play all the games in a series if you actually care about the story. Like imagine reading the Harry Potter books and then just skipping over one and not having any context for major events that happened to characters in previous story beats.

Especially now with the collections on PS4. Its easier than ever to get caught up and firsthand experience the entire saga. Its what I spent my summer in 2018 doing. And I went in not knowing anything or having played any of the games to coming out really looking forward to concluding this arc of the Kingdom Hearts Saga.

And at bare minimum if you don't want to do even that there are tons of compilations on YouTube that you can watch all the cut-scenes. And if you have practically any connected internet device these days you can watch YouTube.

Maybe you guys can fix the MP3 tags in 2019? I dunno, just a thought.

Sometimes the line between a remake and a remaster is blurry, but RE2 is not one of those games. It’s a remake.

Too much like classic DMC is exactly what I want to hear, it's the best action game coming back. That reboot was garbage and will hopefully just get forgotten about now and Nero's more weighty approach is the same from 4. I do hope they add Turbo mode at launch though.

White balance or something seems off in the center camera. Colors appear different. Maybe different camera model or something.

The new DMC isn’t just borrowing a little from past games, it’s basically a direct continuation of DMC4 in terms of controls and camera etc. Some of the timing on moves has been made a bit more lenient - which people are already complaining about - but this is basically that game. The one interior fight the demo featured showed that the camera will still get stuck in corners or looking away from the action - so yah, classic DMC.

@rich666: You are right. They mentioned all the games in March except the GOTY 2019.

Man I really wished that we were getting a DMC 2 instead of Devil May Cry 5. I was replaying DMC for like the 5th time the other day and damn is that game freaking awesome.

@xshinobi: they wanted to make DmC2 originally, but realized that thing was unsalvagable and decided to continue the real games instead. I'm very glad they did and they took the only couple of respectable design decisions that reboot did and put it in 5 anyway. Those things being the training room and uhh..I guess that's it actually. They do the zoom in thing on final enemy hit which it would be better without, and the announcer voice on style rank changes which thankfully you can also turn off.

@chacobo: DmC did a cool thing where you could switch weapons mid combo. So you could do attack, attack, pause, hold right trigger attack, causing you to finish up your sword combo with a big axe attack. Of course in practice, this just meant you could get out those big strong slow attacks during the hit stun from quicker attacks, with little other practical use. It was still a cool concept though.

Too bad the enemy design completely discouraged you from doing anything creative with it. Thanks shields and color coded enemies. Also I'm pretty sure the zoom in and slow down on beating the final enemy was taken from Bayonetta anyway. I like it because it lets you know when an encounter is over, rather than standing there like an idiot until an enemy just off-screen shoots you. (Just replayed through DMC3, this happens a good bit.)

@jijipose: I gave a lot of thought to what made DMC4 so different from DmC that original fans were that unsatisfied and perpetually angry at the game, and while I'm not sure where the extreme vitriol comes from, I did figure out what the significant difference between DMC4 and it's contemporaries is and why I generally preferred DmC instead. The new reboot plays like a character action game while DMC4 plays more like a fighting game. The execution of the moves is more difficult and relies heavily on studying combos, linking chains and cancelling moves in order to link combos that would otherwise not work. You can typically sit down with Street Fighter and if you're not a fighting game person, with a little bit of effort beat the story mode on normal - but you'll never really get good unless you sit down in that training room, look up strings, combos, cancels, and sit there and train until you can pull that stuff off. Games like Bayonetta or DmC have a natural flow to them - the execution isn't the difficult part, it's knowing your moveset and utilizing it at the right time. DMC4 moves aren't all that easy in execution - the way the control input is directionally based relative to your character but stages generally have fixed camera angles make it tougher than simply executing combos and pressing a single dedicated dodge button at the right time. Perfect dodges in Bayonetta weren't easy, but getting Max Exceeds on Nero's sword attacks WHILE juggling an enemy by cancelling in and out of DT at very specific animation frames is a whole 'nother skill ceiling.

Thats the way I see it anyway. It's also why while I can enjoy classic DMC to a point, I know that personally I will never be able to hit 1 frame links and I'm not going to sit for dozens of hours on end in the bloody palace to finally get the timing down, I prefer the natural difficulty progression that Bayonetta and DmC had. Don't even get me started on the checkpointing system in those earlier DMC titles. I have great respect for people that can actually pull that stuff off, but it also makes classic DMC a much tougher game for a wider crowd to enjoy.

I'm so ready for Ace Combat.

@jijipose: you know i'd forgotten just how much angel/demon and mechanical stuff as well as themes that DmC took from Bayonetta... just makes that game even worse in retrospect because it didn't even come close to handling it as well as Bayonetta, which is a game with a pretty nonsensical story in itself but at least tries to have some fun.

That weapon link to finisher thing in the reboot is another cool thing, as well as a visual indicator for charged attacks (which other DMC games have it's just way more subtle) but the lack of all the other stuff that Nero Dante and Vergil can use (the vergil DLC in the reboot is just god awful) is what makes me way more positive about DMCV coming back with style and weapon switching, max exceed, an incredibly smart and natural development of Nero's playstyle and a brand new character that plays like nothing else in action games. (although maybe some comparisons can be made to Chaos Legion and Folklore) but Shadow and Griffon are active with their own health bars and cooldowns and stuff.

Yeah, was shocked they missed that one. One of my most anticipated of the year.

Will giantbomb team watch black mirror bandersnatch...i know the team isnt the strongest when it comes to disecting tv/movies/comic stuff kinda out the wheel house but this is the first bridge gap were getting in that the netflix show is like a taletale thing

Wow was that really the idea? Because KH1 is not an easy game at all. And i'm not talking about the optional bosses and the colloseum stuff. Some of those mandatory Riku & Ansem fights were hard as well. I can't imagine very casual gamers being able to get through that game in a similar way as they can pick up a lego game or say an Uncharted. Jeff seems to imply that the real-time aspect of the combat made it a more accessible game compared to the menu-driven square games of the time. Maybe by making it a real-time game they were able to appeal to a wider audience, but honestly i think the game would've been easier as a turn based RPG. The timing & camera movement you need to use to dodge / parry some of those (often homing) attacks in the latter levels was quite challenging even to me who played boatloads of games.
