@Jeff I completely disagree with your notion that when breaking down Diablo to it's core mechanics you can end up saying 'it's barely even a game'. I think if anything Diablo is basically the essence of 99% of all video games, distilled down to its absolute purest and most honest form. It does away with almost all pretence and gets straight to the point, which is the regular positive reinforcement that keeps pulling you along and doing the same thing over and over again.

My total non-gamer mom says that her favorite cartoon ever was Mutant League, and was surprised there was a game based on it (I guess the cartoon was based on the game though)

Mutant League cartoon show! Yes! I watched that every morning before school! Didn't even know it was a game at the time. Now when I mention I never played the games but enjoyed the show, people just look dumbfounded.

Action Fighter is a pretty cool Master System game. Black Belt, Transbot and Shinobi are all also worth checking out. SMS had great versions of California Games and Fantasy Zone as well.

Perhaps I'm viewing this at an uninformed angle but all the drama surrounding the tomb raider thing seems like the idea holds water if it isn't motivated because she is a woman but because you're supposed to build this connection to the character (regardless of sex) and want no harm to come to them.

Am I nuts?

@Jeff Not everyone that disagreed with your reaction to the Tomb Raider thing is some dumb sexist violence-loving hick. I'm personally not a fan of shooting or too much violence in games and I certainly don't hate women or see them as inferior to men, but I still think your reaction to the Tomb Raider issue is far too overwrought and I feel like you are adding meaning that isn't there.

So far I'm only 45 minutes in and it has been another outstanding video in this series. I was somehow sort of waiting for more comments on Tomb Raider and I must say the further clarification made a lot of sense to me. I understand that while the actual content of the game is not outrageous at all some marketing comments were questionable at best. Maybe this was passed over a little more than it should have during the E3 madness. Taking apart ulterior motives of advertising is obviously fine and even neccessary but most of the blatant and reductive "rape" trash-talking was way worse and more out of line than anything a 'lowest common denominator' ad-campaign might have done. Nothing is worse than fucking hypocrites that push their own stupid agenda while supposedly criticizing someone else's ideology.

Every halfway-capable human being expects marketing to be blown out of proportion and stupid most of the time. Nobody should be fine with the armchair-intellectuals being fucking smug and still way dumber.

Edit: Having now seen it a all I must say it got even better in the second half. Even if one hated all of E3 your insight into previews and that whole thought process in part inspired by the show would've been worth the whole marketing circus. But of course there were a number of really promising games as well anyway. I'll sound like a damn broken record by now but the "Jars" series is by far my favorite editorial piece concerning gaming to date. The level of insight and just straight-up wisdom on display is fucking incredible and that's much more impressive considering the questionable level of discourse that's still mostly going on surrounding gaming and the break-neck speed at which topics come and go in the brave new social media world.

I agree with the Vita comments, I got Gravity Rush because i was absolutely desperate for anything at all to play that was original, great game btw.

Didn't the headshot cheers for the Last of Us come at the end of the demo? It seemed to me that a lot of those cheers where just for the quality of the demo as a whole rather than people going "YEAH, BLOW THAT FUCKS HEAD OFF!"

I'm "the smart person" in my family everyone calls when they mess up their PC. When they found out I build my PC myself, they looked at my like a wizard or something.

It's annoying. Every time I go over, I try and describe what happened, how to avoid it, what to do, etc. But every time, they just brush me off, knowing the magic man will come and do his hocus-pocus on their electro-wonder-box next time, so why would they bother?

To the person who can't play Diablo 3 on their PC.... play Din's Curse! It's unique and fascinating and different, but scratches that same itch.

When pitching to an investor, part of the deal is asking for money. The other (more important) part is convincing the investor that they will make profit on their investment. There is profit incentive. That is MILES away from what takes place on kickstarter. Simply put, kickstarter is comprised of people trying to sell you a product or more commonly, a fucking bogus idea. If you think that's what investing is even remotely about, you're clueless.

Buying a product is not the same as injecting funds into a company in the hopes of a return. And if people are pitching raw ideas to investors, that have GOT to have market data from similar products to back up their statements. Kickstarters can be done by anyone, and started with a fucking concept art page or better yet, a list of ideas. They are two different leagues. Your comparison is completely off-base.
