After Alex tweeted about this album early this year, I decided to finally sit down and listen to the entire thing. I felt physically ill afterwards in a way not even LuLu could replicate. It's pure dreck start to finish, and it's so goddamn long.

EDIT: The line "it's a really well-defined concept, it just sounds like shit and it sucks" had me rolling. Thank you for this.

Still waiting for Lars Ulrich and whatever monster was involved in recording the drums to be tried at The Hague for the atrocities they committed for this album.

I've always remembered the drums on this album being bad, but every time I actually go back and listen, it hits me that they're like a thousand times worse than I remember them. I mean, everything in this album is bad, but the drums are on a different level of horrific.

It takes effort to make drums sound that bad.

This album does suck huge ass but I do like the energy James brings to the vocals. All of the songs could have been tight two-verse furious bangers but they just. keep. going. forever. Every single song is one song times four.

This is seriously my favorite show on GB, keep the bummers coming!

OH I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE

Metallica was my first favorite band not long after I started getting into music around 10th-11th grade in the early 90s. By the time St. Anger came out, though, I had moved on. I've never heard the album in its entirety, and I actually have the two albums that came afterwards, Death Magnetic and Hardwired...to Self-Destruct which I do like.

I've heard the title song, and remember there were actually some things to like about it. I look forward to hearing more about it on here.

Wasn't St. Anger the album that had the bad mix on the disk but the Rockband/Guitar Hero version of the tracks had the actually good mix?

St Anger was the first and only Metallica album I ever listened to when I was younger (for obvious reasons I didn't seek out anything else). I didn't remember much about it and thought people were exaggerating about the drums but lmao it sounds like a joke version somebody made.

@wulfbane: It was Death Magnetic, which came out in 2007 during the height of the plastic instruments craze. I bought that DLC and enjoyed it, and I’m pretty sure you can search for those versions of the song on YouTube instead of the ultra-compressed LP version.

As far as I know, “Frantic” is the only St. Anger song that came out in a rhythm game. It’s for the best.

I remember covering Frantic in my high school band at our annual rock concert. It was tremendously fun to cover. I was the drummer and you're damn right I turned the snare strainer off. A beautiful train wreck :D

@wulfbane: So famously And Justice For All has the bass mixed so low people have assumed for decades there's no bass on it. Someone extracted the original bass stems from Guitar Hero and proved they are actually there!

Yeah, I kind of conflated which albums received which complaints (Death Magnetic was the one I was thinking of with the additional compression on the CD version).

But man, a quick look on And Justice For All and man the quote I found on that. Savage.

I remember liking this album when it came out since it was the first new Metallica album to come out after I got into them as a teen, and because Frantic and St. Anger were inescapable on Kerrang in the UK so I just assumed they must be good, but every time I've heard any of the songs since they've sounded so, so bad. My God, that drum sound is ridiculous.

I'm going to finally watch Some Kind of Monster tonight since I've always been morbidly curious about the mess that led to the album.

Hate on this album all you want, but without it, we wouldn't have the amazing piece of film that is Some Kind of Monster, so overall I think it's a net positive that this record exists.

Also, a bunch of people might @ me for this comment, but I don't care: I think the song St Anger is pretty darn good.

I thought this album was a decoy joke album when it came out. It's so bad.

I never listened to the album before yesterday and I asked someone if the YT version I was listening to was fucked up or if it was just one of those things where they "unmute" it a minute and you get the full effect... ho boy.

ST anger is a banger album anyone with the old mindset of what old head metal guys that graduated in 04 think then your off. Nu metal is back in 2021, trucker hats are cool again and people dont talk shit about St anger any more just people that graduated in 04.

the way each one of these "hosts" Shames anyone that says anything positive about the album is just so Bad. Like anyone that has a differing opinion is wrong.... and this is just shameful to shame someone else for having a differing opinion.

I hate metallica but the documentary "Some kind of monster" is basically "This is spinal tap 2". If you can find it without giving them a penny, you should definately watcht the shit out of that.

@plaidsvenson: Nah. We were so wet behind the ears when we did that episode. The good ones are still up for free but everything else is gone for a reason and also a potential new episode at some point.
