Love the Krillin hate going on so far. Even though I love Krillin myself! ^_^

I guess most of the love for Krillin comes from OG Dragon Ball. He was Goku's training buddy and he has an evolution as a character. One of my favorite parts of DB is the time he has to fight Goku in the Budokai Tournament.

Loading Video...

Ahhh... DBZ is great, but there's nothing like early DB, really. It's a pity the anime is so hard to watch by today's standards.

Also, somebody please do a DBZ training montage with Eye of the Tiger for @danryckert.

@zeik: Since watching Dragon Ball as a kid I've browsed other manga such as this football one where they literally said more than once "the power of a black person!". So ya know, I think Japan does maybe have a weird relationship with black people.

Now if we can just get them to watch the TFS version after this -- but seriously, I am loving this podcast series a ridiculous amount.

Oh god, if they watch and talk about the TFS version I will just be so excited for that! Or maybe watch enough they get to super. I've enjoyed super quite a bit, especially the current tournament arc. So glad Jeff and Dan are giving this series a serious chance. And yeah, some anime fans can be jerks. Much like most fandoms I guess though.

Dinosaurs are there because Arale, a character from Toriyama's other manga called Dr. slump, went back in time and pushed a falling meteorite back into space.

Dr. Slump is in the same universe as Dragon Ball. The characters are even in an episode of Dragon Ball.

The number of questions and incorrect perceptions indicates they messed up watching Kai and shoulda went with the OG. But theyre busy people so its understandable and fun to hear.

edit - Im also bummed they missed out on snake princess and hell. those episodes were great.

@mezmero: Its funny cause the game made almost 3 quarters of a billion dollars for their company in a few weeks. Imagine that putting effort into an animated series makes money instead of just low balling it for big profits. Im happy the game is doing well. even people who hate DBZ cause so many people like it or that its not really top tier in stories among anime, it should help push more companies to risk putting more money into their licensed games. Same way batman arkham city pushed for less crap from movie tie ins and now we have uncharted devs making a marvel game. Times just keep getting better :)

Still thou im so surprised the gb guys arent just joking and taking the show in stride cause it seems too slow paced for most 2018 story telling. In the first 3 episodes today youd already have the character blow up a castle, save the princes, and declear he would be king of the pirates ;)

@brendan: wiki Ganguro-"rebellious youth who contradicted the traditional Japanese concept of beauty; pale skin, dark hair and neutral makeup tones." Could be a cultural misunderstanding. I think it is far simpler than people give it credit about the Po Po skin thing. I dont think its cause the autor is insensitive to the ideas of racism or the US history etc. People in America kinda associate darkening your skin in a different way than other cultures. Hell Hikimayu is a older japanese thing where the trend was to pluck your eyebrows. Americans atleast from what i gage from movie actors, like thicker eyebrows. Point is Maybe its a culture thing that Americans dont understand. Maybe stuff we like seems peculiar but is simple and normal to us. I cant speak personally on any of this and it would be inappropriate to try speculate further but i just try ignore some of the off putting stuff like po po as long as it doesnt distracting me from the story their trying to tell. I dont fault anyone for getting put off by it and stopping thou.

Side note heres popo beating two super sayjins

@grimreefz: NO. Because they intend to watch the show dubbed and the original DBZ dub was garbage from top to bottom, they would have about 20 times more inaccurate information if they watched DBZ instead of Kai.

Not sure I'd say Bardock was attempting to save Kakarot, as it seemed that the baby was being jettisoned into space with or without his input anyway. Bardock didn't actually seem to even care about his kid until he saw his final vision of Goku vs. Freeza, but by that time he'd already been launched out. At least that's how it is in the TV special. I know DB Minus changes things but I choose to ignore that ^_^

@sevith said:

@primworm: Raditz' side was the truth as that's how saiyans operated.

There is one odd retcon that complicates things re: Bardock though. In the movie which that first scene is from, Bardock is "cursed" with the power to see the future by an alien that he just killed. This causes him to see the destruction of Planet Vegeta, which is what leads him to leading the rebellion against Frieza to try and stop that from happening. Before this happens, knowing that the planet will be blown up if he fails, Bardock makes sure that Goku gets sent off-world in time.

So, both are true. Raditz's side is true in that that was his original mission (kill all humans so the planet could then be sold off), but the timing of it (getting sent off right before the planet gets blown up) is a result of Bardock knowing the planet was going to get destroyed and wanting to make sure that Kakarot survived (the "Planet Krypton" approach).

None of that is canon. Goku literally just got sent out on a standard mission to eradicate the population of a weak planet. That's how it's already been explained in the first three episodes of Kai and in the manga. Goku was simply the right age (just born) while Frieza decided to destroy Planet Vegeta.

If you want to be even MORE confused, there is a much much (MUCH MUCH) later retconing of the story that was done in 2014.

http://dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon_Ball_Minus:_The_Departure_of_the_Fated_Child

In this it's even closer to the Superman story, where Bardock and Minus (Goku's mom) are there to send him away, and Bardock is very much worried about Freiza destroying the planet and sends Goku away. It totally recons the events in the bardock special though, and TBH I'm not even sure it's canon. Just felt like throwing another huge wrench into the whole thing.

Sure would be nice if in Kai they didn't flat out erase all of the character building and storytelling between members of the Z squad. In "getting rid of the filler" they apparently thought the meaningful moments between characters and moments that show growth were filler. It's sad.

For every decent filler episode there are about 20 that are terrible. It's not really sad in the slightest.

This might be more revealing of the blindspots of my white perspective than anything else, but I never even considered the idea that Mr. Popo might be a racist caricature. He's just always been a cool dude with a funny look.

Also, Kai is 100% the right choice. The filler is not good and it slows the show's pace to a crawl. Kai is Toriyama's true vision in color and motion.

The content that did not appear in the Manga and was made just to fill time is considered filler and in most cases it's terrible as it just kills the pace and is completely unnecessary. Sure there are nice bits and pieces here and there but it's not worth it for the most part.

Speaking of filler, I think it would've been amazing if more media followed the anime filler route.

Imagine a world where TV version Game of Thrones had to wait for George R.R. Martin to finish the print version before they could meaningfully advance the story. Just an entire season of Jon Snow's misadventures and hijinks while running along Serpent Road, while Arya searches for the Dragon Balls and Khal Drogo goes to driving school.

Nothing the anime added can "build character" because none of it was in mind when Toriyama wrote the story. More often than not filler just contradicts later plot points in the series.

Some of it may be just that there's not really alot of exposure to the Sambo racist caricature. I wasn't aware of it until high school during history classes.

I actually thought something like that might happen, but in a more serious tone, back when the first season started airing. It was already painfully obvious to me at least that the show would catch up to the books. Of course now we know that they basically went the exact opposite way with cutting out all the filler from their self-written story, which is having pretty mixed results so far in my opinion.

Exactly. The worst argument I've heard is that "they're not getting the true Dragon Ball experience" by watching Kai. Even though Kai is far closer to the manga which is by default the "true experience" if you really want to go that route.

As a kid watching Dragon Ball Z I didn't even know what the concept of a "filler" episode was. It's disappointing hearing that they took so much of that stuff out for Kai. Even the Garlic Jr. saga being removed is crazy to me, that was like a major villain who I had no idea was not canon in the manga or whatever.

I'm sure that it's already been brought up, but Jeff and Dan need to keep in mind that Dragon Ball Z is simply a continuation of Dragon Ball. I'm pretty sure that Japan doesn't even make a distinction between the two (or maybe it's the manga that never adds in the "Z"). That's why all of these supporting characters have no introduction; that already happened in Dragon Ball and the audience is assumed to know who this three-eyed man is and what this talking pig's deal is.

As for Mr. Popo, for what it's worth, as a person with a white mother and black father, I never found that character to be offensive. Maybe he's supposed to be. I don't know. I always just saw him as a mystical character with a funny design. Besides, Mr. Popo is so kind and lovable that it's kind of hard to be offended by who he is.

I remember Goku running along snakeway for a pretty long time before he gets to King Kai. So it kinda sounds like Kai is skipping skipping a lot of the story. Sounds like it might be a little confusing so hopefully it slows down a bit for the later arcs.

Mr. Popo is one of those characters who I just thought was a straight up cool guy as a kid never thinking there was anything offensive about him but then as an adult everyone is losing their mind over him and I can't disagree his design is fucking ridiculous if I take a fresh look but it still makes me go :( since he's such a lovable guy.

About the dinosaurs, it's never actually addressed or explained in any capacity ever, but I always liked to imagine that sometime way way back some dude who was extremely into dinosaurs found the dragon balls, wished that dinosaurs were still around, and it's been long enough that people are just used to it now.
