Question for the experts: what's up with the cuts of really poorly drawn art in here? There was some of it in the earlier episodes too, but here it's like I can't go five minutes without a terrible drawing of someone's face. Did the animators just lose those original drawings and had to do a quick patch job?

Top Frieza: good. Bottom Frieza: WTF happened here?
Top Frieza: good. Bottom Frieza: WTF happened here?

I could be wrong but i think it's a combination of things.

1. Kai uses old footage of DBZ in some cases they traced over older drawings to fit a 16:9 aspect Ratio properly in which Kai was aired on TV in Japan. That's why the lower image looks almost like flash by comparison. The Blu-Ray releases were reconfigured back to 4:3 but this was not the case when it was airing. If you go back and look at this moment in the original Z it looks nowhere near as bad as it does in Kai.

2. Since Kai is a recut of Z whit 95% of the filler cut out at times to speed up the pacing they had to combine two older episode's into one single episode, which can make certain stuff look odd as the shift in episode's art style occurs . Many Z episodes were drawn by different studio's i believe with different animators on several episode's and that can lead to this kind of inconsistency in artstyle and animation.

Dan at 17:50 says, "I actually can't remember if he says , kept you waiting, huh? I don't know why I would have written that." WHAT! Of course you would have written that, Dan. Wrestling [action films] and Metal Gear are the only frame of references you have.

Height comparison of the Freeza arc cast. I think Freeza in his final form isn't that much taller than he is in his first form, but I'm not certain.

Vegeta grows a bunch in 40 episodes though, he seemed so tiny when he first landed on earth and he's still a bit short during the Freeza Saga but he's around Goku's height in the Buu Saga and Super.

This isn't really explained in the anime, and even then I don't think until the Dragonball Super Manga, but the reason Vegeta can't just keep getting hurt and reviving is that is less effective every time it happens basically. It just scales poorly the more it is done.

Nope. He might gain some height when he bulks up later, but otherwise he's about Vegeta's height.

No Caption Provided

But again, height is pretty inconsistent in Dragon Ball. In particular Vegeta is generally depicted taller later on in the series. I was just looking up screenshots and saw a namek saga shot with Vegeta shorter than Bulma, and an early Super shot where he's a bit taller than her. The designs kind of just change over time.

Also sometimes it's just inconsistencies between different animators/artists.

Frieza's original form is definitely like, Krillin height at best, then 2nd and 3rd are super tall. It seems like 4th form is officially supposed to be slightly taller than first form but still only up to about Goku's shoulder. However, I can't blame people for thinking that 4th form Frieza is equal to Goku's height, because it seems the animators didn't always follow the style guide properly. I imagine it's much easier to animate fight scenes where the characters are sized/proportioned similarly.

My bad if this picture is fake, or from DB Super or some shit, but as far as I can tell this looks like a screencap from a DBZ episode, though I don't have the ability to check exactly which one. They're like 1:1 in this shot, or if anything Frieza is actually bigger.

@bisonhero: You might want to cover that screenshot up. It is from DBZ, but it's after Frieza bulks up to 100% full power, which is why he looks like that.

But yes height still varies from scene to scene based on various factors.

@redhotchilimist: There's a good article about the redrawn scenes process here:

http://www.kanzenshuu.com/production/kai-remastering/

Many of the redrawn scenes are related to the new aspect ratio, but a lot of them come from new Japanese censorship laws passed after the Pokemon Porygon fiasco, specifically removing the now-banned screen flashing and strobe lights effects from scenes. Which is why you'll very often see it when characters power up or fire lasers. The byproduct of redrawn scenes is that they don't feature the fairly subtle "shaking" effect of the old cels, which probably occurs due to the machine used during the remastering process.

Honestly redrawn scenes are BY FAR my least favorite thing about Kai. Those scenes stick out like a sore thumb, and a lot of the times they seem like there's very little effort put into matching the original style. Some things are kind of hard to reproduce -- the pigment differences between new digital color and old 80s coloring techniques requires a more involved process, but it annoys me to no end that they almost never try to match the original's line technique, which is the main source of the "quality" concerns.

the one thing I couldn't help but think is how much Friza's final form looks like Mewtwo from Pokemon. the color blocking and morphology is pretty much the same. Unless I'm mistaken, Dragonball Z came out several years in Japan before the Pokemon games did in Japan. Is there ever an explicit influence for Mewtwo? It can't be a coincidence that the two characters look so alike, right?

Another week, another bout of questioning my allegiance with Vegeta. While Goku has been more incapacitated than active in this run of Kai, at least he hasn't been the overconfident mess that Vegeta has been. Dude literally almost killed himself, without guaranteeing that the Namekian would restore his powers. If not for Gohan and Krillin due would be dead. Then he goes "Super Saiyan" and is still rocked beyond belief. Frieza is literally taunting him with kidney shots.

It might be time to get off the Vegeta bandwagon!

No.

I love that Jeff's bad Vegeta voice is also a highly accurate Stevie Richards voice.

I HATE that we have to wait an extra week to hear their reactions to some of my absolute favorite episodes of DBZ ever.

Freetza is such an amazing villain and the next few episodes are the payoff we've all been waiting for. Oh and spoiler: Sean Schemmel SHATTERS his voice at just the right moment.

I don't want to be that guy in telling you all how to watch these but I would really recommend not watching the next episode preview on episode 46. Normally I say enjoy stuff however you want but it really kind of just tells everything. I think a lot of them do but considering it's two weeks until the next batch. Maybe don't watch this one.

If they would watch six episodes just ONE TIME, then go back to their usual five, then they’d consistently hit the very best chunks of episodes every time, along with the best cliffhangers. It’s a teensy bit maddening how close they are to being dead on the mark.

I 100% second this. Include episode 47 in this batch guys.

@ahifi: This entire arc is the most filler Dragonball gets. Kai is cutting it down quite a bit, and yet you've STILL got...a lot of episodes (judging from an episode list, I'm not watching along) of pretty filler-y shit.

But I mean, my recollection of regular DBZ is that the frieza saga is like 100 episodes or some nonsense, so this is still light. The show will always have some elongated fights, but as long as you like cool looking attacks none of them before or since will go on anywhere near this absurdly long. A quick glance at the Kai episode list shows me this is for sure the longest bout of 'powering up and fighting' except possibly near the end of the series, but that particular segment has a lot more variety.

I'm loathe to try and ask Jeff or Dan since I know they get a ton of anime dbz fan bs already, but I actually would be super curious what they think about the Bardock and Trunks specials too, since they're A) short. B) not random pointless bullshit like every dbz movie, and instead serve to concisely fill out the world as it canonically exists already. I actually love both of those two specials.

@drachmalius: It's not even close. He's just entertaining in a way that makes all the other antagonists except Vegeta seem really one note and dull.

I've been watching the Kai recut of the Buu stuff, and whilst there's still a lot in those episodes I like (the return of the comedy is nice after it gets basically excised from the show during the Android/Cell story line), listening to this episode really hammered home for me just how sharp the drop in quality is. Especially in terms of the art style.

This is pretty much reason number 4569095 of why I prefer the OG series to Kai. While the pacing in original is a bit problematic, the solution they come up with in Kai is and always will be a patch job to an existing work - and looks wonky a lot of the time (especially if you've seen the original.) I haven't seen too much of Kai, but from what I have it kinda assumes you're already familiar with Dragon Ball Z and are looking for a quick refresh on the events of it (and ain't nothing wrong with that.)

One of the things i missed from original DBZ was the Japanese music. It was actually the first thing I ever imported, a 5 disc collection of it. I skipped ahead a bit to the next saga after freeza and... they have the original Japanese music in all it's incredible glory!!! Why did it change? I'm happy as heck, as the Cell saga music is incredible.

Ah I found out why, starting with ep *52 it goes back to the classic soundtrack (YES!) because the new "composer" was just ripping off a ton of other songs and he had been for nearly 20 years.
