All Systems Goku 21

I'm so happy this is back!

I was surprised when they didn't do an episode after the Cell stuff ended, but I guess it makes sense looking at how the Dub cuts the show up and presents the episodes. I didn't think for a second that they'd take a huge break when they did, but the wait has made it even sweeter!

@jeff how can you guys think pure hearted ChiChi had her ways to a passed out Goku. Are you guys forgetting the time Cell set the date of the tournament and after Goku and Gohan left the time chamber, they went home, to train their Super Sayan Control. Since Goku had 3 days to burn (at that moment Piccollo went in, followed by Vegeta and then Trunks, that makes 3 days) I guess he had some fun with his wife

Man I continue to be surprised by how much kai cuts out. In original DBZ there's a whole saga between the end of the cell saga and the saiyaman stuff and also them not knowing who babi is because they cut all of her appearances out apparently.

Videl is the most underrated character in this series.

I think it's pretty funny you can tell who's watching pirated fansubs and who's following along on legit purchased copies of the show by the confusion over episode order.

Gotta say it's weird Japan's release of Kai would cut non-filler material and for once I'm very happy with a decision by FUNimation, but from everything I've read the turmoil that Kai's production underwent (leading to the gap in releases, change in quality, and change in chapter naming scheme) was pretty nuts.

@mrbubbles: I'm pretty sure Kai doesn't cut out appearances of Baba, though I'd have to go back and double check. She's a non-filler character and was pretty important in Dragon Ball. She just only has a few minor appearances early on in the Saiyan saga. At one point when the gang at Master Roshi's house is trying to watch the fight on TV but the broadcast goes down, Baba arrives and they start watching on her crystal ball.

Oh wow, I haven't checked out AMV's in a decade but I guess my evening plans are settled now.

@crylion: The only thing I don't get is, by reading the episode summaries on wikipedia, it sounds like you miss a bunch of important things from the missing episodes. Videl confronting Gohan about his secret identity and blackmailing him into participating in the tournament, Goku talking to Gohan, Vegeta, etc. from Other World to tell them he's coming back for a day, Goten transforming into a Super Saiyan in front of Gohan for the first time...

...surely all that stuff wasn't cut out, right? Does that mean the first few episodes of the Japanese Broadcast version are just the important bits from a bigger handful of the full International release chopped up and mashed together? That's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Maybe I'll just find that version and check out the differences myself. It's almost like you're watching double-Kai as it's been trimmed down from Z and then trimmed again even more.

How has no one commented about Dan saying he wants to write DBZ fanfiction after looking up AMVs?

It's like he's running through a compressed 90s.

The Japanese version cuts the episodes in a different way. The main plot points with Videl confronting Gohan, Goku talking to Gohan, Goten and Gohan training, etc is all still there, but they removed some extra stuff, like kidnaping the Mayor. The bus hijacking, the Chobi rescue, Videl blackmailing Gohan, all happen in episode 2. Episode 3 has all the training we saw and will see in the next episodes.

Great to see All Systems Goku back. :)

I feel like Dan and Jeff discussing Videl and getting hung up on her being just human are kinda forgetting that we already have humans like Krillin & Yamcha...

Edit: Dan missing all the stuff the show is heavily insinuating is amazing as well, like Krillin and Android 18 being together with a daughter, Videl and Gohan developing a relationship and Videl's name being a anagram for Devil.

Buu Saga Best Saga

Goten was probably conceived during the week when Gohan and Goku come out of the hyperbolic time chamber before the cell games started when they were at home and Gohan has his birthday.

even the bad sagas are fun to watch

The Buu arc is a lot closer in tone to original Dragon Ball, so people who like teh dark edgy fightz and obsess over numerical power levels tend to not like it as much.

To answer a few questions:
-Original DBZ had an arc right after Cell Games about Goku's adventures in a fighting tournament in the After Life, followed by this batch of episodes. Kai took a multiple-year hiatus between the Cell and Buu arcs; hence the new theme songs and background soundtrack in both versions of the show.
-Nimbuses (nimbii?) are sentient. They are summoned from a giant candy cloud when called upon, and I'm pretty sure they're never the same one. They're not Saiyan-specific, but can only be ridden by people with a clear heat/conscience - used to belong to Master Roshi, but he useless for him since he's, well, Master Roshi. Other non Son characters to ride it include Chichi, Arale, and Krillin after surrendering his porn stash to Master Roshi.
-Krillin's self induced baldness was mentioned in OG Dragon Ball, but even Goku forgets this detail.
-Most of the other stuff that seemingly comes out of nowhere is established in the original series.
-Chichi is probably gung ho about Gohan/Goten fighting in the tournament because there's no one on the planet who's really a match for Gohan's raw strength - so it'll be an easy win.... right?

Yea, i never realized Videl was an anagram of devil. This was the first time in a decade that i saw Goten & Trunks-kid again, and up to now i actually quite like both of them. Especially Goten has some nice juxtapositions of being a polite kid & a joyful badass.

i rate this episode 4 out of 7 dragonballs.

If you guys like the Buu saga you will love OG Dragon Ball (if you ignore the pervy jokes) and Super.

Very surprised Jeff forgot the days that Goku and Gohan were just chilling at home before the Cell Games as CLEARLY the time when Goku and Chichi got busy.

That was a shorter hiatus than I thought it'd be, but damn it feels so good to be back.

Kinda hoping Dan's off-handed comment about how much they were 'warned' about this saga, despite loving the goofy stuff, clues some people in that recommending people stuff while only taking YOUR tastes into account doesn't really work.

I really just want Videl, Mr. Satan, and The Great Saiyaman to become their own characters in DBFZ. I think they are in Dragonball Z Infinite World, and that game is fine but it's also a decade plus old PS2 game and certainly not as good as the new ASW fighter.

I think we have now confirmed that there is an alternate universe where 90s child Dan became a huge DBZ nerd instead of a huge wrestling nerd, and it would've been just as natural a fit. 20+ episodes into this podcast, it's still kind of heartwarming how much Jeff and Dan are enjoying themselves watching this show.

I think the easier explanation for Goten's birth, and honestly also Gohan's, is that Chi Chi either milks him for his seed while he's conscious or more likely when he's asleep.

I never thought of Videl being an anagram of Devil, since her father was called Hercule in the version I watched on Cartoon Network 20 years ago. It's sad when she cuts her hair.

Krillin did have a girlfriend at one point, called Marin, and he and 18 named their daughter after her. I don't think Kai ever mentions her, I think she was in DBZ and not OG DB, but I remember him pining for her and her walking all over him.

If Dan actually writes his fanfic I think there's a good chance it'd be turned into an OVA, they don't seem to be very picky about what they throw out there.

Bless the AMV makers with a good sense of timing and a deft editing hand.

Maron was a filler character in the anime, she never appeared in the manga. She was in the Garlic Jr. filler arc I think, or right before or after it.

Apparently (according to the Dragon Ball Wiki at least) Marron (Krillin's daughter) wasn't named after Maron (Krillin's anime girlfriend) as Toriyama said she was named after the French word for chestnut because Krillin's name also partly comes from the Japanese word for chestnut.

I'll try to keep it simple, but yes, the original 1993 Japanese run of episodes more or less goes straight into this stuff after Cell, give or take a few filler episodes of Goku in Other World. It's precisely where the story continues!

The reason why everything feels so different in terms of Kai is because Dragon Ball Z Kai and Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters were done as completely separate productions, done three years apart (Kai: 2009-2011, Final Chapters: 2014-2015). (The English airdates are as recent as 2018, but we pretty much know they were done around 2014 and weren't released till now).

The episodes you watched up till now all used music from the original 1990s Dragon Ball Z soundtrack, while The Final Chapters features a new composer, soundtrack, and new transfer method resulting it in being widescreen.

They did actually have brand new music with a brand new composer for the first run of Kai.....but he got busted for plagiarism as tons of his tracks were blatant ripoffs of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, etc. So towards the end of the televised run, they replaced all his tracks with music from the original DBZ composer, which is what you can hear on the English home video today.

So when it came time to do The Final Chapters, they got a new, plagarize-less composer. When compounded with the fact that show's story right now is much lighter than the stuff immediately before it, and the fact that it's widescreen too, I can imagine it makes the show feel EXTRA different!

I'm so glad Jeff and Dan are on the right side of history for the Great Saiyaman arc.
