Wow this was an awesome podcast. I'm a huge F1 fan and you guys are really fun to listen to. I enjoyed it a lot. Good job! Also... Grosjean started from pitlane because he left his pit too early. Cars aren't allowed to leave their pits until 15 minutes before the race to line up. This prevents all the cars from parking in the pitlane for too long.

I had that similar thought. Also, after the race, Kobayashi said he didn't have any rear brakes going into turn 1. But, I suppose there's no reaction like over-reaction.

I used to watch the Melbourne F1 from the rooftop of one of the nearby office buildings my Dad used to work in. The sound from up on high was incredible.

Pro tip: If anyone goes to Albert Park for the F1 or any other time, grab a burger from Andrews Hamburgers afterwards. Your arteries will thank you, after they recover.

A few answers for some of the points they weren't sure about that I can remember.

From listening to the team radio between Hamilton and his engineer, it would seem that the team just wanted an extra lap of data. After the 'retire the car' 'stay out' communication, Hamilton says he is down on power and the team confirm that is what they are seeing on the data.

Bottas won the GP3 Championship (2 tiers below F1) in 2011 and was made Williams test/reserve driver in that year.

The tyre rules, if I'm reading them right, are every car gets an extra set of options at the start of qualifying. The cars that don't make it to Q3 are only allowed to use the extra set in the race. The cars in Q3 have to hand that extra set back after use in Q3. The cars in Q3 start on the tyres they set their fastest lap in Q2 unless the weather is different between qualifying and the race.

Vettel, as Champion, had the choice of 1 or the number he picked for his career (5). He chose 1 for this season and will then be 5 for the rest of his career. The 2014 Champion will get the choice for 2015 of 1 or their career number.

I'm a big F1 fan. I watch all the practice sessions, qualifying and race. I did use the live timing but they've put sector times behind a paywall, which is completely ridiculous.

if your in Q3 and your using wets you get to choose what tyres or tires depending on where your from when your lining up on the grid for the race you choose what dry tires you can use

I wanna start watching F1 now that there's a source of duders who can help explain it and talk about it with, but I have no idea where to find it for viewing in Canada. Anyone know of somewhere I can watch them either live or on demand online for my country?

Was very excited to hear an F1 podcast was coming to GB, it's going to be a great season!

Great stuff! My only suggestion is that the guys will need to figure out a structure for the podcast, because they were jumping all over the place there.

Maybe something like :

Stuff that happened since the last race -> Quali -> Run through each teams race results -> Other general comments from the race -> emails

Anyway, you know what was really weird about that race? The pigpen they herded the drivers into for their interviews. It looked like a F1 driver petting zoo.

Just FYI, the reason the Australian crowd cheered when Vettel went out is because most Australians feel like Vettel pushed out Webber from F1. Webber was a pretty big star in Australia and there were many times Vettel was seen as getting unfair privilege over Webber here in Aus.

The best example of course was last year when Webber was overtaken against team orders.

Most Australians just hate Vettel because he put our countries best driver out in the cold.

Huh? Not entirely sure how you came to that conclusion. I like several drivers, though I have yet to lash onto one like I had Rubens.

He was already starting in the Pitlane because they made modifications to the car under parc fermé. The 15 minutes issue was them sending him to wait at the end of the pitlane too early, and for that he incurred a drivethrough penalty.

Bah, I wish Giant Bomb were my teachers in school! I swear I'd be better edumacated now had they been my tutors. I've ZERO interest in F1 but gave this a listen out of curiosity, enjoyed it from start to finish. No compulsion to start watching F1, I already spend far too much time watching other sports, but I will, most assuredly, listen to the next Alt F1!

Regarding the driver numbers, Vettel has chosen 5, but the world champion has the choice of either their chosen number or "1". Vettel has chosen to race with "1" on his car, as pretty much every driver who wins the championship is likely to because it's a massive ego trip running around with number one emblazoned on you.

The previous system was that the driver's champion would get 1, his team mate would get 2, and the rest of the teams would be in constructors' championship order (So if the champion driver's team were also the champions, the second place team in the constructors' championship got Cars 3 & 4, 3rd got 5 & 6 and so on. 13 was excluded, so the 7th team would get 14 & 15).

I haven't made an effort to regularly watch F1 in like forever (since Hamilton was the wunderkind for McLaren or just after), but I'm paying attention this year thanks to the podcast. Danny & Drew make a great team.

p.s. I hope Robert Kubica comes back again and doesn't have a life-threatening incident this time. =[

@forkboy: you're not the type of person I was referring to in my original post though are you? sounds like you are a fan of the sport and not a driver, which I would recommend to anyone, you're doing it right.

Thanks for the podcast guys! Great first race, lots of action. Unexpected drama and rookie success are a fantastic way to start the season.

Yeah, this exactly, and I think the engineers were still trying to figure out the problem and see if anything could be done. Danny suggested they might have left him out to help Rosberg by holding up the pack, but I don't think they would do that so early in a race and so early in a season.

What a great way to start the new F1 season, a shake up to the usual finishing order, technical dramas and unlikely team mates winning out.

I'm a bit disappointed at the noise of the cars though given this was the first race I got to attend in person. Getting to hear the solo red bull 2011 car go around the track was stunning by comparison, can't imagine what it must have been like to have more than 20 of those running around.

What a crazy race!
