Alt+F1: 71 - 2016 Preseason Primer

The Pastor may be gone, but the But Gro Per still burns... Seriously though, glad to have the guys back in my ears. The preseason tests always put me in a wonderous mood.

I watch far too much motorsport and I'm one of the crazy ones that watch the practice sessions for F1. I think this will be my 24th full season of watching F1. Indycar also starts up this week and Nascar has been back for the last few weeks. There is also a Formula E race this week.

This podcast was one of the main reasons why I become a paid subscriber of Giant Bomb (with metal gear scanlon being the other), and I'm ecstatic that it's going free! More people should enjoy this - it was inarguably more entertaining than the actual F1 season.

@drewbert is there going to be an itunes place for this cast? It would be cool to get it to be the number one F1 podcast on there.

Yay, it's back and it's gone Free! I haven't watched any F1 seriously since the Mid-2000s but I really enjoy this 'cast. And now that Haas has brought a (nominally) 'murrican team to the grid I may have to start watching as well.

@dannyodwyer Baku has been around since pre-history. Archaeological digs have found almost constant settlement of the area pretty much as far back as it's possible to reliably date versus the history of humanity itself.

Also, Dallara built the HRT F1 car from a few years ago, along with some garbage cars back in the 80s and early 90s. They're a bit of a joke in F1 circles, at least partially because of how extremely successful they've been in IndyCar.

@drewbert @dannyodwyer the DTM is a stock car racing league similar to the FIA world touring car championship WTCC. The Touring Car moniker means that the cars are modified production (or stock) cars. (In the DTM you have Mercedes AMG C-Classes and BMW M3 modified for track racing for example).

Touring Car comes from the term Gran Tourismo (Grand Tourer) and simply means that the production car was originally designed for long distance driving (hence grand tour). That's because historically they used such cars as a base platform for racing.

That's also where the label "GT" comes from you see on many very fast road legal cars.

@nigeth: current DTM cars - despite the T in the name - are not touring cars like the WTCC. they are prototypes disguised with a chassis that relies on street cars. thats just for brand recognizition and fans.

About Manor's 2016 lineup:

Maybe I misheard what Danny said but the driver with "government money" is not Pascal Wehrlein.

The government sponsored driver is Rio Haryanto, an indonesian driver that "brings with him substantial backing from the state, creating a package that neither Stevens nor Rossi could match."

Wehrlein on the other hand is sponsored by Mercedes Motorsport and a favourite of Toto Wolff. His signing was actually a condition for Manor to get Mercedes engines and it is planned that he will eventually get a cockpit at Mercedes in a few years when Hamilton or Rosberg retire.
