Also: this looks really good! Normally I hate pixel/old school art style, but man this looks incredible.

Seems like this is a little less specific than Dan is suggesting. Obviously there's a lot of Hard Corps in here, but there is also a similar amount of Contra 3 and Metal Slug. Besides the animation stuff Vinny keeps mentioning, the close range melee, vehicle mechanics, and some of the font work are right on point for Metal Slug.

Been waiting on this one since they announced it a year or so ago. Only got to play about 20 minutes before work, but it's already hitting the right notes.

I can see the similarities to Contra: Dan "accidentally" grabs both weapon upgrades, Dan moves faster than his teammate and Vinny dies off screen, Dan's "yip!" and "hya!" sound effects

I'm surprised how much Metal Slug it was, given that I was only expecting Contra.

I would love for them to run Shattered Soldier. Lately i have been craving these retro games, and for every one there has been a new game to satisfy that need. This is a better year than i had thought it would be for games.

I wish Dan wouldn't use Hard Corps as his Contra reference, it's insulting.

Hard Corps is one of the best games in the Contra series. That said, this game plays more like Metal Slug than Contra, aside from the firing modes.

Those bot options and the level select give me strong Shatterhand vibes which is rad.

100% with Vinny on the pauses and taking control away from the player thing.

The graphics are great though, when pixel art is properly done like here and can't get enough of them. Just a bummer that so many indie devs do them so poorly.

Looking at the gameplay trailers, there are definitely a lot of boss encounters modeled directly after some of the Hard Corps bosses.

Please do more runs! I can watch Dan and Vinny play these games for the rest of my life.

I mean all logic aside, every side scrolling game like this will forever be "Like Hard Corps" to Dan the same way every action movie is like Commando etc.

But unlike his "is this ska?", "is this Björk?" or comparing everything and anything to The Rock, wrestling, Metal Gear or Commando, I think Hard Corps is a totally reasonable comparison for this game, even if it's not a 1:1 match.

You can double jump when you have a speed-bot, that's how you get some of those out of reach items

Strange that I played Hard Corps 25 years ago and kept waiting for a new release of it. Thought it was lost to time and everyone would think Contra III and its bad top-down stages were the pinnacle of the series.

Now I'll have two ways to play that and a Hard Corps-like within a span of a few months. Works for me!

@kevinski: The litmus test I've always used for "Is this Metal Slug or is this Contra" is if the enemies hurt you by touching you or not.

@csl316: I didn't have a Genesis so I didn't know about Hard Corps until the Run, and I immediately started playing it when the collection was released. I was convinced that it looked great but could not be anywhere near as good as Contra 3, one of my SNES favs. I finished Hard Corps with my wife and we both loved it! Then I was like, "Well if you think THAT was good, check this shit out" and we booted up 3 and I painfully realized on level two how much nostalgia was propping that game up in my mind. Hard Corps is way better, IMO, and those top down levels are garbage.

Anyway, thus ends this unsolicited, completely unrelated to the QL, anecdote.

Also, this game looks dope.

Theres also Hard Corps: Uprising which was developed by Arcsys and is personally my favourite in the series. I loved the dash, double jump and wall running you could do, shame it will never get a proper sequel.

I've played the first few levels of Blazing Chrome and it's okay but it feels more like the later Metal Slug games to me in that it's checking all the boxes but not really doing enough to be memorable.

@boozak: Uprising is a great game. I actually filled out much of the wiki for it here. Played it again a few months ago and it still looks and plays sharp.

I hadn't thought about that, though I was more so referring to how the game feels in terms of character movement. That said, I do wish more side-scrollers used the Metal Slug damage model, as I do think it's silly for player characters do die simply from bumping into enemies.

Gamepass really the gift that keeps on giving, I've only given them $2 and got so many games now it owns

Dan and Vinny would really love Run Saber I think.

The developers of this game also made Oniken and Odallus: The Dark Call. Their motto is "we know retro", and I'm inclined to believe them.
