I understand taking notes for the hidden items, but referencing notes on the bosses before even trying to figure them out on their own is a bit of a let-down. Just like how Game Informer is using a guide for every step of their Shenmue 2 run. I guess streamers just don't have the time anymore?

@gregalor: The only notes I had were weapon priority. As much as I want to discover these games, long stretches where I'm experimenting with weapons aren't necessarily fun to watch, especially when I'm still learning the patterns on the fly.

Football nerd here: Peyton and Eli were quarterbacks, Cooper was a wide receiver but had to give up his football aspirations due to injury. Peyton then took Cooper's number #18 into the pros with the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos respectfully. Cooper Manning currently works for Fox Sports as a pregame segment actor.

the world's best tip for all sorts of auto-scrollers for all kinds of games: avoid the urge to hang out on the side of the screen that's scrolling in. You can't dodge what you can't see popping in.

For the H-sync boss, the music is super similar to another classic game, but I cannot place it.

Any suggestions?

Edit: The main part of Clash on the Big Bridge from FFV is what I was thinking of.

I've played through all of the NES Mega Mans at some point, but don't really remember anything about 4-5-6 short of a few select moments. Because of this, it feels almost like we're discovering entirely new Mega Mans that are just using the old graphics, like Mega Man 9 & 10 did.

It's real fun.

@gregalor: I think with something like Mega Man it's pretty understandable to check a weapon guide since it's 99% execution in the first place. Alex could go in blind but it would just result in needless deaths and draw it out that much longer.

I'm continually impressed with Mega Man 4. Never played it since I heard 2 and 3 were the peak, but I'm liking this far more than 3 in just about every way. With the biggest factors being better music and more creative level design.

I want to apologize for using the word "fatter" in my question about @alex's drummer physique. We don't always phrase things the best way on the internet, and it seems like he got the gist of my question regarding drumming as physical exercise.

Just wanted to point out that this video points to Mega Man IV for the Game Boy and not Mega Man 4 for the NES if someone wants to fix that for organizational purposes.

The Wire can be surprisingly effective on Dr Cossack's Mean Claw Machine as he has a giant hit box and tends to hang out above you. Obviously you can't move while firing it, so give him a salvo or two of it while he's attempting to grab you and you're off to his side. Mega Buster does the most damage, but can be tricky if you're not used to it. Personally, when I'm playing 4-5-6 my thumb lives on the B button, always be charging etc., but it's not comfortable, and gets less so the older and more arthritic my hands get.

@hellbrendy: @manga53: Austin was a buzzkill :/

entitled to your opinion and all that but you're out of your mind. some of the funniest moments in quick looks and podcasts were vinny and austin having a made up conversation about something dumb. i'm not sure what made austin a buzzkill aside from having some intellectual insight on a game every now and then.

@sublime: You're entitled to your opinion too. He was very political correct and wouldn't allow the others to have fun when it was against his beliefs. One reason i stopped listening to the Beastcast was because he would constantly challenge people if they said something that was against his beliefs and when someone like Alex would challenge him, he would just shut the conversation down with "That's your opinion and that's fine." Even when Alex insisted on facing the topic head on, he would shut him down.
"intellectual" isn't something i would call him, but then again "smartness" is also subjective.

I'd argue that Dan would give more insight into games, since Dan asks alot of questions, where Austin seems afraid to look stupid, so he wouldn't ask much, i don't really remember Austin asking any questions. Dan however asks question all the time.

@vampire_chibi: IMO Austin was easily the best thing to happen to this site for a very long time.

If you're anti-PC then that's your own weird thing to deal with, but you're lying to yourself if you believe Dan asks more insightful questions than Austin ever did. I don't hate Dan, but you can't deny he has a shtick. He asks a lot of questions but most of those are non-sequiturs, and usually related to some mundane facts of life. (e.g. "What do you do when your lights go out?" or "What is ore?")

Also, I'm a bit confused to what you're referring to. Can you give an example of Alex calling Austin out on being "too-PC" and Austin just palming it off? I've watched/listened to almost every piece of content GB has put out for the last 7 years and I can't think of a single example, not to mention that Alex is already a pretty progressive dude himself.

I've personally continued to follow Austin since he left GB, specifically because he's one of the most genuinely thoughtful games writers of the past few years. He's often openly self-critical about his own opinions, and how he came to have them in the first place.

Dan is asking questions grade schoolers ask their teachers. He's fun to listen to at times, but I don't come to him for fucking 'insight'. He's enthusiastic about the things he likes, but the conversations he creates are often more about him then anything actually about the stuff discussed.

I don't know what you've been listening to if you thought Austin was shutting anyone down in conversations on the Beastcast. It was pretty clear they could go back and forth on a topic to me. In the course of TWO guest appearances (before he arrived in NY for good), Dan had already done 'well, that ain't fucking true' response to something discussed. Dan straight up DISAPPEARS in segments of the podcasts (Bombcast and Beastcast) when the topic broached is too much for him. You could count on Austin to have something to bring to the table. Whether it was something *you* agreed with, which I feel is the real issue here as opposed to the rest of crew. The rapport was there, you had something in your craw for what he provided.

And that's not to say this is a Austin > Dan thing for me. Dan's great when he discussed things directly concerning him. His feelings on games are alright, but generally read like book reports to me. I can find anybody to tell me that something is awesome because an awesome thing happened and that's awesome. He's a storyteller and that's great considering all the silly bullshit he's done. If you're coming to him to give you some great information on a release, you maybe need to reach a higher bar.

I'll probably put an application in for the associate producer position, given Vinny's insistence that they're looking for someone looking to get experience, not someone who has a ton already, but I'm really not expecting anything to come of it. I've applied for jobs with CBSi before and never heard a peep, and especially where Giant Bomb is concerned, there are going to be so many more talented and worthwhile people applying that HR will likely skim my resume and pass over it without a second glance.

Negativity and low self-worth aside, the wrong Mega Man game is linked for this video. That's the GB Mega Man 4, when it should be this one: http://www.giantbomb.com/mega-man-4/3030-8141/

When did you come to GiantBomb for deeper insight into "intellectual" matters? I come here for the video games and for fun. It's always been about video games, let's keep it about video games, there's a reason the duders aren't engaging in political discussions.

It was never about what i agreed with or not, it was that he didn't allow others to share their beliefs.

Dan's a better entertainer and for someone like myself that come here to be entertained and watch video games, i'd always pick Dan over Austin.

Insightful can mean more things than just what adheres to your own beliefs. I've not said Alex called Austin out for anything, don't know where you got that from.

Personally i don't find Austin's opinions to be groundbreaking or particularly interesting, if anything he's sticking his nose into things and causing trouble where none was intended, like the mechanical apartheid fiasco.

Digging up old posts but I don't give a shit.

You want an entertainer, say that. Don't give me this 'he's more insightful' garbage because he has the enthusiasm of a sixth grader that got to see boobs or an R-rated film for the first. It's okay to come for game talk, but don't act like he's saying ANYTHING unique in any perspective. If you think that they aren't actively making a deeper discussion, then you've have been paying any fucking attention.

Dan is actually a very good entertainer.

All of the attempts to pit the audience against Dan/Austin are a buzzkill in my opinion.

Dan and Austin are both great entertainers in their own ways. Your approval of one or the other is entirely subjective. Writing an essay on which does the job better seems bitter at best.

@kunakai: I know I'm replying to an old comment here, but just wanted to say I completely agree with what you said, and appreciate you saying it. I'm still relatively new to the GB audience over the last couple years, but no host I've ever seen on this site has even come close to being as much of a buzzkill for me as the weird grudges against them in the comments.
