About not going to see a movie because the director may be a shady individual - that strikes me as completely unfair to all the actors, crew, cinematographer etc that put a lot of really hard work into the film and then have people dismiss their efforts because when the director isn't working he's doing weird shit on the side.

I was always of the mind that the two things should be identified for what they are and kept separate. Would I go have dinner with Bryan Singer? Probably not. Would I see a movie that was directed by him? I'm not a HUGE fan but yah sure. I just don't think me going to see the movie is contributing to whatever unethical behavior he engages in as he'll do what he does regardless.

I agree with you as it stands right now: He's innocent until proven guilty. However, I perfectly understand why some people boycott movies because they don't agree with the views/deeds of one or more of the people involved in the movie. Some people boycott Mel Gibson movies, others boycott Roman Polański movies. I would never watch Ender's Game or any other adaptation of Orson Scott Card's work, and he's not even directly involved in the movie!

So it might be jumping the gun a bit on Singer, but in principle I have absolutely no problem with people boycotting a movie (or any other form of art) because of one or more people involved with the project. It's not up to me to care about the other actors, the writer(s) etc. if I do not want to give money to one specific person involved.

If you're interested in hearing my train of thought with the Hostel movies:

I really liked the first Hostel movie. Not the torture scenes themselves, but the movie overall was entertaining. It might even be one of my favorite "horror" movies, because what it does is deal with human horror, things that you can believe the reality of, rather then the supernatural horror or whatever. Man's potential for cruelty is nothing too far reaching. It also ups the stakes for the characters involved, heightens the tension and emotions. As well as making the retribution part more meaningful.

Sure it's no Seven or Oldboy, but considered purely as a horror flick I found it more interesting then 95% of the other samey stuff out there.

Now the second Hostel movie mind you I felt the violence only existed for the sake of violence and not in service of a point. At that point (ha) the whole thing falls apart and it's just gross and uninteresting, starting to edge into the "torture porn" territory just for the sake of it, if i might use the bad term.

It a similar dissonance of purpose and action in service of that purpose, why the second 300 movie just doesn't work at all, or the second Boondocks Saints fails.

My problem with Hostel was that the first half is filmed like some low rent Eastern European softcore porn movie where nothing at all happens. There's not much build up in those scenes, it just feels like filler.

I really love these. Too bad about how Screened ended up. Loved that site so much, made me get way into movies.

Super interested to hear thoughts on The Wind Rises. I loved it to pieces, but both of the people I went with (who are as much Miyazaki fans as I am) found it overly slow and were basically put to sleep by it. I thought it was great in how it connected me with a guy in a profession I've never had any interest in by expressing his artistic desire to create.

I remember back when I used to visit Screened that I never felt the same way as Alex about anything, but man he's right. Lar von Trier's films are terrible. We did get Bjork singing with Peter Stormare in one of his movies though. (Although the version with Bjork & Thom Yorke is better.)

I've never read the book but everything about the movie, including the story, was completely awful.

Captain America 2 was amazing...best comics book/Marvel/super hero movie, in my opinion.

True Detective was awesome...I don't care what anyone says, I thought the ending was appropriate and awesome.

Edit: The Winter Soldier character is a ridiculous premise?

I don't think it was mentioned, but wasn't Peter Stormare's character in Constantine supposed to be Lucifier and not Satan?

As a non-religious person myself, I am pretty sure Lucifer and Satan are two different characters, but I'm pretty sure we can generalize both as HEAD DEVIL BAD DUDE FROM HELL.

Great show, as always.

Satan talk and pedophiles was a weird twist, but the last 5 seconds were glorious and perfect.

Stopping halfway through to avoid crashes is a brilliant move, too. Inserting a Bombcast-like ad in that break with Rorie and Alex selling things would be wonderfully awkward (despite being a premium cast).

The Counselor?? What an insane (read: terrible) film. Although that thing they killed Brad Pitt with still freaks me out when I think about it.

Finally! Garage Band didn't destroy another episode of Behind the Screened Door Ver. 2.0. Been too long since I've heard Alex and Rorie wax about the world of movies.

WTF Screened is gone!? And with it my OKCupid profile for Rorie that was guaranteed to find him love.

Just want to mention Dave Grohl's portrayal of Satan in Tenacious D: Pick of Destiny.

And don't forget the first two Blade movies. I wouldn't rank them above The Avengers (2012) but they don't feel as broadly-appealing and calculated (as set-up for the next movie) as the solo Avengers movies. Trinity sucks though.

Just wanted to make it known that I love these podcasts. I would super love getting a more regular installment of these. Use the good podcast room that everyone else seems to be using! Anyway, thanks Rorie and Alex for doing these!
