Thank you for playing more Doom, Brad! I rewatch the 2012 Breaking Brad Doom really frequently, so coming back after all these years is quite the treasure. Hope you get encouraged to play some more, or some other old shooters. It's really relaxing and fun.

All this Doom stuff always put me in the mood to play Heretic or Hexen. For me growing up they where equally as essential to me as Doom was.

The Breaking Brad - DOOM series is an all time classic. I rewatch it often as well.

Hardcore Henry sucks. It was reviewed pretty poorly and everyone shit on it when it came out, but it feels like the last six months or so have had a resurgence of people talking about it in a positive way.

The action is bad and hard to follow, Henry is not hardcore at all until the end of the movie, a large portion of it is an escort mission, and there's a fucking dance number. Don't waste your time. It's a terrible movie.

EDIT: Brad if you love things fighting each other, you should give Vampyr a shot! It's like a Victorian-era Mass Effect where vampires and cultists duke it out. It's great.

Yessss. Even though Heretic is just a fantasy-Doom-clone, it holds a higher place in my mind than actual Doom.

Watching how often Brad dies, it feels like this is unforgiving on an annoying level. Not sure if it just the difficulty Brad is playing on, but I don't see myself playing it.

Weird, I booted up SIGIL in GZDoom while watching this video with I'm pretty sure the same settings and it definitely wasn't as pitch black as I'm seeing in this vid.

I find Ben calling the cacodemon the "cacaodemon" way funnier than I should.

And thanks for fixing the lighting mode =] Don't feel bad for upping the gamma, it's just "Legacy" light mode that is the game-breaking thing, but a little gamma doesn't hurt. Yeah, not the best name for a lighting mode...

A bit of the doom community wishes John was a little more specific about his intended settings for the wad, 'cause the lighting and other aspects have definitely been a point of contention--people had pretty different experiences with the wad, due to various differences in settings. But, we do know he intended the dark parts to be super dark, judging by the original Sigil announcement video, which does include a tiny bit of footage of those super dark outer catwalks of E5M2. And we do know from his tweets that he strongly recommends disabling looking up/down ofc, even though I'm pretty sure he posted some screenshots where he was looking up...

In general, the doom community likes the wad a lot. Most aren't calling it the best wad ever, which makes sense, since it's up against 25 years of crowdsourced quality, but most people liked it quite a lot. A few people despise it, always due to the difficulty, and due to some specific cramped fights, especially the ones toward the end of E5M7 >:)

I'm kind of mystified by Romero's reputation as a "Great level designer." I've played way better WADs in Doom than whatever this shit is. These aren't really particularly well designed levels, even on the standard of the original Doom when it was new, they're just bullshit "kaizo" levels, basically. Anyone can be a dick and be like "Oh hurr hurr...walk along a tiny walkway while 50 guys shoot at you and then at the end there's 8 Cyberdemons, etc.. etc.." it doesn't take some great brain to come with that kind of infantile crap. I feel like the fan community put way more effort into more interesting experiments back in the day.

These are enjoyable, but why the hell is Brad playing without Mouselook?

But it wasn't an action movie. It was a semi-artsy absurd comedy with periodic bouts of ultraviolence. And in that regard, it is awesome

Sharlto is pretty much gloriously over the top every time he shows up. The camera work and how scenes are framed are interesting possibly more form a "game design" perspective as they use a lot of the same tricks and techniques Valve document in their level commentaries. And the bursts of action tend to be reminiscent of stupid violet 90s stuff.

@stanleypain: Playing this on ultraviolence (?) doesn't do the WAD credit. One tier down and you have a lot less bullshit and the levels have a chance to breathe. It reminded me a lot of the AvP2 Marine campaign in that you probably ARE equipped for everything you run into, but the mixture of lighting and bursts of bullshit make a real sense of anxiety and dread.

When a door opens and there is a Baron you know you are fucked, but want to fight anyway (and you aren't really fucked because you just found some health and the room is set up so that you can shotgun it with a lot of dodging).

When you walk outside and there are two cyberdemons, a lot of the magic is lost.

And I played with the Buckethead soundtrack, and it did a great job of Get(ting me) Psyched. Hitting a switch and all the lights turn out becomes "This is fricking awesome" rather than "So how many cacodemons just spawned?"

There's also a good Thursday Night Throwdown of Doom multiplayer mods. I rewatched it after wanting more Doom after the last episode.

@Brad Not sure if you have ever heard of this but here's a 90s Bomberman clone by the name of 'Boom' based on Doom that somehow found its way onto old Apple Macs at my school in Scotland back in the late 90s/early 00s. I doubt many know about it and I don't think it was ever officially sanctioned by id Software. Enemies are sergeants, imps, pinky demons and so on and Bomberman is obviously the Doom guy!
