Looking at this even as not a zelda fan. Waiting for quick look first though!

Brad only died five times?!?! Fuck. This game is absolutely ruining me. I'm only about an hour in but I've probably died twice that amount, and I have experience with Necrodancer.

Yeah I've died a bunch, too. I'm having trouble adjusting to the "rules" of combat. Apparently if you and an enemy attempt to move into the same tile at the same time, you take damage. Also, reflecting things back with Zelda's Nayru's Love is tricky. Fortunately dying lets you spend diamonds on heart containers which is really clever.

Alex would have been much more interesting on a rhythm game than Ben.

@garwalk: As with NecroDancer, the players' actions take precedence. If an enemy is about to move into you and you attack it, it takes the hit before it moves. Likewise, if you and the enemy are about to move into the same space, you move first, then it moves into you and hurts you. And so on.

The difficulty on this game is very weird, and I think it lacks a lot of the polish that makes Zelda games and nintendo games in general memorable. I died probably 20 times before beating the first dungeon, but after that managed to clear the entire map, collect all the items, and beat the game without losing another life. I think certain items make the combat trivial (the mace especially), and others that you find have almost no use except in a few specific puzzles, or no use at all. At the pace that I was finding items and moving through the game, I didn't even get a chance to use many of the combat items or weapons I was finding, especially in the last dungeon. Overall its was a fun romp but it feels like an idea that needed more fleshing out, better puzzle design, and just more overall polish.

Do they not realize that the map tiles are completely randomized?

Edit: Nvm Ben figured it out haha

I love this game! (finished one run so far, 100%'ing the map). But the inventory & economy pretty much trivialize the difficulty esp. compared to Necrodancer. Not to mention pretty much all you need is a spear (which you can then make into obsidian or titanium for a *few* diamonds) to make most encounters feel much safer.

I suppose the lack of armor slightly compensates but hearts also tend to drop like candy. And of course you can also buy red potions.

Obviously playing with the 4th character would pose a significant challenge (haven't started that yet). But I do think this game would be better overall if:

- it wasn't so easy to get so many diamonds (or diamond rewards cost significantly more)

- you weren't able to carry around every weapon

- available enchants were randomized and/or time-limited, with the "special" weapons having permanent buffs

That said, Zelda is badass in this game and Din's Fire is a blast to use.

I can't remember the last time I bought a game so soon after release, but I have absolutely zero regrets. This game is so. damn. good.

Best part of the overworld theme is the Tal Tal Heights mix from Link's Awakening. No question.

@effache: Once you get a hang on the gameplay you don't end up dying much, I find. Also, the game is randomised and meant for multiple playthroughs.

Doesn't Brad understand that after you've killed all enemies you don't have to bump to the beat? I mean you can move freely after you've killed everyone on one tile.

nvm He understood. It's just so weird that he did it in the beginning of the video though.

I’m also getting destroyed by this game and the talk of only dying a handful of times is insane to me. I’m fairly early though and I’m sure it’s because I’m yet to find another weapon.

Zelda games don’t interest me at all, and this is no exception. Brad assumes everyone shares his nostalgia, but I can assure you that’s not the case.

The art of this game is gorgeous (and the music of course). I assumed this would be a clone of Necrodancer when it was announced, so it's cool they tried something pretty different and more Zelda-like. Definitely want to grab this when I can.

Crypt of the necrodancer wasn't my sort of game so I had no interest in this game, however the soundtrack for this game is my music-of-the-year so far

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AXxJbctW6U is the full soundtrack

I can hear The Legend of Zelda (Nes) and OoT at the very least, OoT was the last one I played until BotW though so I'm sure there's other stuff in there!

I also love this game, but going to echo the difficulty complaints others have made. I died 5 times in the first hour and prior to the first dungeon, but once I got a new, upgraded weapon (which I then used for 80% of the game) and a few hearts I was basically unstoppable. I think I finished the game with 200 diamonds and 7000 rupees. The weapons pretty much break the balance of encounters by letting you easily attack from a safe position without having to worry about enemy patterns all that much and a little exploration, especially since they are permanent.

The only difficulty was in the final dungeon and boss, which felt much more like a classic Necrodancer dungeon run in length and scope. I hope they rebalance or create some hard mode that makes the rest of those dungeons match up to the final one, since those seem to be the best place to introduce a more consistent challenge.

I'm not typically a fan of top-down Zelda's, and Necrodancer was a bit too punishing for me, but this game not being strictly "run-based" (and more just randomized when you start a playthrough) makes it infinitely more appealing. May give it a shot.

@deathpooky: I've heard elsewhere that permadeath mode, single character mode, secret character, and dailies tend to amp up the difficulty. It seems like the regular story mode is maybe less randomized and thus a bit lower-key than the other modes. I would definitely love to see some expansion of this game, though, for sure. I hope it was successful enough both for this team to do more with it and for Nintendo to fund more stuff along these lines.

Bit of trivia for you @brad , Northernlion's wife (lovelymomo) made the music and was a bit of an inspiration for the first boss, the oboe one.

Also have a lot of Necrodancer experience and died like 10+ times in the first hour. But also like most people pretty much stopped dying entirely once I found my first 2 range weapon, which you'll likely do relatively quickly.

It turns out things got way easier once I got the spear. I died once on the boss of the Lost Woods after that but I was also home from the bar and not at my most attentive. I think they could have struck a better balance between Zelda and Necrodancer. I'm having a lot of fun but it feels like a mash of two styles of game that aren't exactly meant to be paired. I mean that as a both a compliment and a criticism.

I really don't get the "it's a backdoor sequel to Link to the Past" comments (Ben is far from the only one saying this). I mean, yeah, the graphics are there, but it still plays like Necrodancer, when people were saying you could turn the rhythm stuff off I'd assumed it would play more like Zelda instead of just a faster Necrodancer. Other than yeah, the graphics, I just don't see it as a 'backdoor' sequel. Especially when everyone's complaints are there's not enough dungeons and they're just combat heavy, not many puzzles etc...
