Man it's crazy how rough 720p games look now. Kinda wish she chose the PC version but I'm still excited to see Abby go through this.

I renewed premium for this, good job y’all. This and the sequel are some of my favorite games, but don’t let anyone tell you Dead Space 3 is any good ... well, maybe that first section was ok.

Looking forward to this!

Here is a short list of unsolicited advice:

  • Use stasis to give yourself either time to reload or time to aim
  • Buying the next suit gives more inventory, and you need cash for that
  • Sell spare ammo and med packs to get what you want
  • Leaving stuff on the ground means you didn't sell enough
  • The Node Rooms are worth it. Keep one Node on you.
  • Don't get the Flamethrower, it's kind of a waste

before God of War tauted the 'one-continuous shot' thing, Dead Space did it first almost a decade ago.

Dead Space was one of my favorite games of the previous generation. I think it still looks fantastic, too. I love the world-building, although I don't think that'll come across as well in a Playdate environment. I hope she likes the game enough to dive into Dead Space 2, which I loved as much, if not more than the first game.

I do think Dead Space 3 was still an all right game, but not as good as the first two. It's less fun when you finally get to the ice planet. The game understandably got a lot of hate for having microtransactions for...gun parts, I think?, but I ignored their existence and had a mostly good time with it. I really wish I could've found the time to do some co-op with my brother. I liked the true ending with the DLC too and had been looking forward to what happened next in the series, which has yet to come (and probably will never happen).

So glad this video series is happening!

Also anyone reading this, please help out by tagging the video to the correct game page because it's tagged to the franchise currently. I already did this but it takes more than one to get it to stick.

  1. Just click Tag this video
  2. Add the 2008 game Dead Space (not the iPhone game).
  3. Also above that add "Jeff B Bakalar" to the hosts. (cause he was in the video)
  4. Then click "add tags"

Done!

@zinkn: Honestly, I do enjoy the videos of Mary playing RE and Dead Space more. She genuinely seems to be into the games she is playing and Mike provides some nice commentary about behind the scenes stuff from the games. By contrast, the GB streams all sound like three amateur comedians breaking in their new material about weird stuff in video games!!

Yeaaah...you can just skip Dead Space 3, if Abby decides to continue with the series after this one. They really seemed to try and put some emphasis on the storytelling in that one and it just wasn't interesting at all.

Dead Space 2 though, one of my favorite games ever. Not scary, but I just really enjoyed it as an action game.

Bioshock would be kinda fun, if she decides to pick something new after this.

P.S. Also I had completely forgotten (or just didn't know) that you could spin the camera fully around in the beginning to see Isaac's face. I thought you'd only see it when he finally takes off that helmet.

I don't want to tell you how to play the game because you're doing well and won't have any issues beating it, but I do want to give one piece of advice I wish I knew when I first played this:

Don't ignore the secondary fire of the line gun. Consider how you may be able to combine it with your other suit abilities. It's crazy useful!

Re: the book that @ybbaaabby hated. I'm still trying to figure out if she's talking about (1) The Gone World by Thomas Sweterlitsch, or (2) The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway.

It totally fits that Rorie recc'ed #1 to Vinny, but based on context clues, Abby may be talking about #2. It is weird enough to cause a strong reaction, and also the kind of book a friend might mistakenly recommend to Abby, given her comedy background. I just can't imagine The Gone World working someone up into a fury, but I may be wrong.

Truly, the literary mystery of our times.

I suspect that Abby has it correct, as her reaction perfectly encapsulates my feelings toward The Gone World.

@ilostonjeprody: Apparently, Abby was indeed talking about the other one. Just a gut feeling that Nick Harkwaway would drive her up the wall.

I thought The Gone World was far from perfect--some interesting concepts though--so I won't begrudge you your opinion!

It's on PC. Played through it many years ago and it was definitely on PC. And just checked Origin, it's there. Probably also on Steam at this point.

it's on PC but the controller support isn't great apparently and there are serious issues with M+KB smoothing which makes it nearly unplayable without mods. It's also prone to a few bugs, including a full-on progression-stopping glitch at the end with the moving pillars, which I ran into. AFAIK the console version is the easiest one to jump in to.

Yeah I hope she uses more of the abilities, if for nothing else just to make it more interesting to watch! Just gunning through might get a bit repetitive and I would hate if she found it boring later on because of that, but hey, we'll see!

Hey Abby, I'm so excited that your playing this game! Some key advice might have been lost in the opening of the game. In the game, you have two melee options, the AMAZING stomp with RB and specifically the swing with RT. When you get surrounded, you can slow down with enemies with stasis to make it more manageable. Also, with the kinesis power, you can stab enemies with their own limbs which is pretty fun.

I have beaten this game numerous times on Steam without a single gamepad issue, ever. Never even heard of people having gamepad issues. Never tried it with KB/M since games like this tend to be designed around the speed you can move with a controller to begin with.

Glitches are abound on every version, however. I know there was one "bug" where near the end of the game, if using mouse and keyboard, Isaac would jump fine to the first thing you needed him to jump to, but after that for some reason you're supposed to hold shift to jump to the next one, so people wasted a lot of time thinking it was broken. I guess it kind of was, but only because of the weird controls.

This game is from that nasty Gen 7 era where every AAA game repeated every basic thing over and over and every JRPG would have characters talk diagetically about a basic thing then have a tutorial box AND I HATED BOTH OF THEM.

Was hyped for this but after watching a bit made me realize Dead Space is kind of a boring game to watch. It's a great game but not as scenario-driven with outlandish moments as RE, so it's just a lot of going down hallways shooting stuff. Hopefully Abby returns to RE with RE 1, eventually.

Dead Space 1/2 are awesome games that hold up incredibly well. I played this one when it came out, loved it, and then finally went back to it a couple years ago and was really impressed with how great it still is. Worth replaying.

Controller support is fine assuming you're using an Xinput compatible controller - which anyone would be at this point. Way back in 2008 when the game out, the use of XBox controllers on PC wasn't quite as ubiquitous yet.

The only bug with the KB & mouse controls is that the in-game vsync is busted. It locks the game to 30ps (despite it being capable of running 60fps without issue) and introduces serious mouse lag. This is easily remedied by simply turning off the in-game vsync and then using video card profile to force vysnc. This resolves the mouse lag and will allow the game to run at 60fps. There are some potentially game breaking issues if you run it at a completely unlocked framerate. On modern hardware the game runs at really high framerates and there are a few sequence breaks and physics bugs if it runs too fast, so you just need to make sure you use video card vysnc or other tools to cap the framerate.

For Abby, who I don't think has much experience messing with this stuff, console is fine. However, I've replayed Dead Space on PC like every other year since it came out, including as recently as October 2019 and it's still absolutely acceptable on PC as long as you have basic PC game tweaking knowledge.

TLDR: The book Abby talks about is not the book Vinny is reading.

Just got to the part where Vinny talks about the book Matt recommended, The Gone World. Pretty sure he's referring to the book by Tom Sweterlitsch, which is an excellent sci-fi/time-travel/murder-mystery story. Matt talked about it on a video a while back.

Abby, on the other hand, is talking about The Gone-Away World, by Nick Harkaway, which she talked about on the Beastcast a while back. The book has its issues, but I liked it quite a bit. The twist in the last 3rd of the book goes a good way towards explaining some of the weirdness about the way the story is told, and Abby kind of misrepresented it when she talked about it on the Beastcast. (To be fair to her, she only looked up the ending . . . she didn't finish the book.)
