Old Games: Encyclopedia Bombastica: Amplitude

Alex waxes nostalgic (and nonsensical) about this Frequency follow-up, the rhythm games of "back in the day," and the music of his misbegotten youth.

You've found yourself at the base of Giant Bomb's Old Games.

Kind of hard to understand a music game if you can't hear the music...

Sorry about the audio levels, guys. I think I got the vocal mic where it needed to be, but the music ended up pretty quiet. Still experimenting over here! It should be more hearable when I'm actually playing the songs, hopefully.

Glad to see this game get some recognition. Frequency is still probably my favorite of the two, though, but both are really good. Not enough people remember what rhythm games were like before plastic guitars and a thousand renditions of Fat Lip.

One of my favorite memories of the PS2 era was getting a network adapter on the day it came out, rushing home, and playing Frequency online all day. Some of the Frequency team was playing online too that day, and I got to play with Robotkid on my custom End of Your World remix. Memories.

For me, one of my favourite rhythm games ever. I much prefer games like this which don't require special peripherals to play.

He worked as community manager for Harmonix so he probably had to do a lot of that.

Halfway through this video, I realized that this is, at its core, Rock Band Blitz. Glitz'd up and and glamourized, with a new soundtrack, but Rock Band Blitz is Amplitude.

EDIT: I also realized Alex is like a young Adam Sessler with his rambling music diatribe at the end. LOL.

Wow that's OK man, don't sweat it. What's more of a concern in my opinion is your monotone, which makes you a little awkward to listen to. It almost reminds me of early Brad, but not quite. Ha ! Ha !

But hopefully it is a problem that will solve itself over time, as you gain more on screen solo unscripted experience. Other than that, boring games man and the videos are too long. But perhaps that's just me. Ha ! Ha ! Jeffs games are better, and I can still vividly remember the cheerful Pitfall 2 music.

I never really got into the whole Guitar Hero/Rock Band craze, but I sure played a ton of Frequency and Amplitude.

Ya, Alex, when it comes to the "becoming an old man about music" thing, me too. I can't seem to find anything "new" that I like. I just tend to listen to old stuff. At least it's not just me.

I played the ever-loving shit out of this when it came out. I preferred the Frequency soundtrack, but the Amplitude gameplay was superior. Good memories.

Mumford And Sons, The Lumineers, Imagine Dragons all have songs pretty high on the charts. Hell, Bad Religion and Paramore have albums that are in the iTunes top 10 right now. There are popular bands, it's just that they're kinda crummy.

Also, I think last year was just a bummer year for music. A lot of bands that were due to put out albums based on a two year cycle didn't put out albums. There were some really good ones though. Passion Pit was great, that Japandroids album is flat out incredible. Guided By Voices came out of retirement to put out 3 goddamned albums in the past year, with Robert Pollard dropping another 2 solo albums. Other than that though, I mean The Walkmen put out another solid album, The Mountain Goats album was good, etc. There was a lot of solid, but not a lot of exciting.

@Alex: I agree with you entirely. Things have just changed within the music industry. It's nowhere near where it used to be. It really just kind of sucks, but that's the good thing about music, you know? You can still just pop in some rock and listen. It sucks that it's not as prevalent as it used to be, but oh well. Keep on keeping on!

Good Bombastica, by the way. Glad to see you're keeping up with this.
