Well that went off the rails.

So much for this Donkey Kong 64 playthrough to, you know, actually be about playing Donkey Kong 64.

I'll go to bat for DK64. It hasn't aged well and is easily the worst of the Rare 3D platformers on the N64, but it isn't abhorrently terrible. It's really not that bad or obtuse when you have a little curiosity, explore around and pay attention.

The issue is this video series is maybe the worst way to experience this game. The crew is only playing two hours a week (and not even every week), split between 4 people, and constantly interrupted by bullshit spins of the wheel. That's no way to retain information, especially when you skip all the text boxes.

It's frustrating to watch. At this point I'd rather see you guys put a bullet in this series if you aren't going to give it a fair shake

I've been enjoying this series, including this episode, but I really do hope that things get at least semi-back on the rails next time.

Imo, it would be a good idea to re-analyze the rules/items/etc. and adjust them accordingly and ESPECIALLY to get a guide to help them know where to go/what to do when they're truly lost since I really do think it'll save them a lot of frustration in the long run.

I'd just really like them to, if not get all 201 golden bananas, to at least see all the levels/beat the story. But at the current rate they're going (Buying 1 of 3 end-the-series items on the 3rd episode on level 2 out of 7 (Not including the hub and final "boss" level) with only 11 golden bananas), the series is gonna end waaayyy before even that, which honestly kinda bums me out.

@lyndbako: I don't think this show is about giving anything a fair shake, it's a bunch of purposeful nonsense. DK64 is inconsequential, it could have been any average platformer.

This is partially because I can't seem to concentrate on this feature and tend to watch other tabs with the audio on, but I really can't tell what is happening most of the time.

I remain hopeful that they will send something to Antarctica.

Paraphrasing a comment I saw on reddit: Make one of the items a copy of Super Mario Galaxy and when someone buys it you guys start playing that instead. Keep the title Burgle My Bananas, but play a better game because Donkey Kong 64 doesn't work with these rules.

I'm not sure if Vinny made this episode awful or amazing. He is so desperate for this feature to be over. I bet they finish before they even see the fourth level.

This game needs Calvinball rules. Every episode needs to add a bunch more bullshit rules, and remove a bunch of previous bullshit rules.

This. The series is something like 40% bitching about the game in ways that are only semi-fair, 40% spin the wheel (I have no idea why they find that so amusing), and 20% anything resembling a real playthrough. The game is obviously a product of its time; it doesn't have great draw distance and doesn't completely hand-hold you with everything, but half the stuff they're "confused" about are a lot more clear if you're actually playing the game instead of trading bananas and spinning the wheel at every chance. They could probably solve a lot of the problems they're having if they either stop and rethink how they're gamifying this or if they read a strategy guide or something instead of keying up camera angles.

This episode is the most I've laughed in a long time....and of course there's people in the comments complaining they aren't taking the game seriously enough lmao

The banana economy was bastardized from the beginning when very common coins (wait until those ground pound dirt mounds) were rewarded with spins but this episode it was out of control! I wouldn't care but I love watching you guys play this game. I have so much nostalgia as the N64 was my first video game system and I had the jungle green system. I don't want to see this series end before at least the game is won and its starting to look like its gonna be over before you reach world 3! Don't cut this series short! Give Mike a guide as he will have the best understanding of when to appropriately use it without just following it step by step. Without a guide you guys are gonna get frustrated and end the series before its time.

I absolutely love this feature but it seems like they're just trying to end it with the "buying wheel spins" thing.

I love this series and this episode was the great kind of off the rails (like when they retire a train!).

I definitely think that the 150 bananas that go towards the special items should NOT go in the bank, though, and should be taken out of circulation. There are obviously other little rule tweaks that could be made, but I think this is the most urgent one to make sure getting those items is still a challenge.

As for the curse mask, it could be interesting to make it like a banana draining debuff. Lose one banana every 30 seconds until you get a golden banana. If you die and have to pass the controller, the timer switches to lose a banana every 5 minutes.

Kiki is an SCP

While I do think this series is fun in its own way, it has nothing on Steal My Sunshine. At least that series was still mostly focused on playing the game with stupid gambling behind it. The spins are fun but way out of control and it really feels like now they're just abusing it to end the series. Make them rarer - maybe after getting a big banana, you spin to determine a reward, with a small chance of other effects similar to SMS. This would also fix the economy issue where getting bananas are effectively worthless, which is part of why the gameplay feels secondary to the wheel at the moment.

I really loved DK64 as a kid, and while I appreciate that it hasn't exactly held up, it would still be a lot more fun to watch them play it instead of just spinning a wheel for 2 hours.

God this game is ugly. At least Super Mario Sunshine looks nice and is colorful.

This was ridiculous and a lot of fun. Folks in the comments, please just take heed of the fact that this is a stupid 'game show' and not 'a show about a game'. It's not an actual full playthrough. Dan stated in episode one that the game will just end once three of the special items are gone.

I will say that as much as it was great to see it fall so dramatically off the rails - and observe Vinny and Dan trying to play one another with Dan, of course, not being able to walk away from the possibility of winning everything and both of them getting fucked over in the end - it would be nice to see SOME level of order restored for next time. But if you guys, behind the scenes, want this show over with quickly because the game is so insufferable or because it's a technical mess, I'm not going to blame you for turning this into, effectively, a pile of diarrhoea-induced bullshit. In fact, this would be the only diarrhoea-induced anything I'd ever want to see in my life!

Yeah this playthrough is DOA, this group bless them can't remember any of the abilities and they're gotten 11 gold bananas in like 4-5 hours with one X already. Seeing them turn around when they were about to get Tinie pretty much sealed that. I don't think any of them knew the investment they'd need to play these levels properly and the wonky controls is doing nothing but push them further away. Mike seems to have the most knowledge yet even he hasn't done much to help guide them. They haven't even unlocked Tinnie / Lanky and somewhere in the next 2 worlds is where they'll likely shut down this series, I bet 10 bananas on it. ):

i love how irreparably off the rails this show has been from minute zero. i love how dan made all these arcane gameshow rules around a video game he remembered zero specifics about and i love how transparently desperate everyone is to end it as quickly as possible. i'm not being snarky about this at all, i legitimately love it. this feature is the trainwreck this game deserves and it's one of my favorite stupid messes this site has ever produced

Just switch to Banjo-Kazooie if you do not want to play another Mario game but want it to be a 3D platformer with collectibles. I'd say you could call it Jack My Jiggies, but I imagine the name might not fly...

This game is bad, and this series might also be bad. As dumb as the rules are I don't like that they don't care about the rules at all.

Man, I am amazed that people in the comments are getting upset about this feature. It is just a vehicle for your typical Giant Bomb antics and there are zero stakes. Nobody on staff cares whether they win or lose (except for possibly Dan). I just don't see why anyone watching should be invested in the outcome. Just enjoy the show and all of its stupidity, like the constant wheel spins, which I personally find to be hilarious/part of the gag.
