The phrase is most definitely "cut the mustard" not "cut the muster." It's first used in the late 19th Century in the US. And Abby's question is a good one-- there's no consensus about it's origin. There's a good discussion of it here:

https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/23763/what-is-the-origin-of-the-phrase-cut-the-mustard

There's a lot of speculation about where it came from (i.e. the use of a sharp knife to cut tiny mustard seeds, or the use of a sharp scythe to cut the tall growing mustard plant) but there's no definitive evidence found in contemporary texts.

I'm really quite impressed with how incorrectly you guys did that one. In fairness though, it all worked out and I suppose y'all just don't have the experience/map knowledge to know that there's a river right by where the island is that'll take you pretty much straight to the destination.

'Cut the Mustard' is probably a conflation on 'Cut the Cheese' and 'Up to Muster', but can mean either.

If the game expects you to take a river there, maybe the minimap pathing shouldn't have encouraged them to get off at the nearest boat dock and drive on the highway.

Okay there's been some interesting speculation here on the potential etymology of "Cut the mustard" but from my understanding the most widely-accepted version is this:

Saying someone was "keen as mustard" to mean enthusiastic, or "strong as mustard" to denote strength, was very common in England going back hundreds of years (remember that English mustard has a much stronger, more intense kick to it than standard American-style yellow mustard). Similarly you might've heard Danny O'Dwyer use the phrase "Not enough mustard" when describing an underwhelming kick in football/soccer.

This led to people using the word "Mustard" to mean great or excellent. Which then follows on to saying that someone or something "doesn't cut the mustard" to imply that they're not up to standard (cut here being used in the sense of "exhibiting" such as if you said, "he cuts a fine figure across the dance floor").

As with a lot of language, it's a weird evolution of the use of terminology over time where the origins of the meaning can be lost to time somewhat, and we have these bizarre phrases that people don't know the origins of. I like the "knife that doesn't cut mustard seeds" idea, but in practice that's not something you'd ever need to do, and it would be difficult even with an outstanding knife.

As much as I am enjoying this series, it just serves as a reminder of how much I dislike GTAV/GATO and how bad of a game it is to me.

I really dislike how much they make the player characters shuffle in the cutscenes. I know they don't have much else they can do but they weave and move around like they can't stand still.

lol this is such a pathetically weak excuse, there are any number of things that they would obviously never touch. Trans people are just a minority that are/were still acceptable to treat as nothing more than a joke to much of society, and it's one of many things that makes GTA games age extremely poorly, despite their enormous budgets and production values

Hopefully, this isn't actually the final heist. I'd love to see them return to do the Doomsday Heist.

@sharkman: always try to punch up in comedy. Trans people are the subjects of all sorts of real abuse, adding fuel to that fire in the name of satire suckkkksss.

@mikemcn: "punching up" is such a stupid concept. If the only people it is acceptable to make fun of are people who have never encountered any sort of institutional suffering then we are literally left with rich, straight, white men as the only valid targets of humour, which sounds incredibly dull to me.

That joke wasn't even targeting trans people, it just referenced the fact they exist and made a dick joke. It's not the height of comedy but it's fine.
