I am very glad i decided early on to mainline RDR 2. Can absolutely understand that those who put 30-40 hours in chapter 2 find themselves in a fatique and frustration.

Also i don't understand why people hunt at all, that's not even neccessary in any way.

It's fun? But that aside, I just finished making the last satchel yesterday and it upgrades your inventory limit for almost every item to 99. Which I'd say was definitely worthwhile - plus I discovered a bunch of interesting side things while I was tracking down the animals.

Dan's criticism of RDR2 is confusing. He thought you couldn't fail missions any more because the out-of-mission stuff is way more complex and detailed than ever before? lol...that's all video games ever made (even MGSV had this and that was more open-ended than this.)

That being said the idea of going into the game to 100% seems insane, I've not been rushing through it (as I don't have any other games to play for months, Tetris Effect sounds fun but $40 for Tetris with trippy backgrounds is a but much when Puyo Puyo Tetris does everything I need) but I have pretty much been going on the steady - story mission then some side stuff then story mission or two, rinse repeat. 100% requires doing every optional objective in every mission (kind of tedious), hunting every animal, collecting all the cards, etc. which is neat but not that fun. I'm glad that's there because this is a game I'll go back to, but I probably won't get to everything for over a year if I'm being realistic and I don't even need to be playing 5 games a week all year like people who work for this site sometimes need to do (or necessarily have a very busy life otherwise.)

But I haven't had any trouble with the stagecoaches, never looked at the trains because they seem inefficient compared to stagecoaches.

also can't you skip around in missions? there's an option for "skip checkpoint" when you die a couple times, but I've never picked it.

@vinny: Maybe I’m missing something because of the site redesign but I can’t find the premium version. It didn’t download in Pocket Casts for me like it normally does this morning either.

@king3pj: try checking again. The premium cast wasn’t showing up for me either earlier this morning but it just downloaded on my Overcast app.

RDR2 seems to have the same problems I had with GTAV with extremely restrictive missions. That's a bummer.

The premium version ended up downloading for me in Pocket Casts around 9:30am ET.

Jeff is completely right about Giant Bomb blazing a trail. The guys saw the need for personality led content way before anyone else.

On the one hand, I sympathize for Dan's plight.

On the other, Red Dead's aggressive weeding out of people who have no patience is one of my favorite things about it. It does not give a single fuck about what you imagine your time to be worth.

It works out for me, because it is precisely my jam (and GTA is definitely not), but I totally get why it is not a jam for other people.

Not sure how you can keep doing the same things over and over on missions, and beings upset that the game keeps saying "nooo finish this mission". I get what he means in a sense though. But like getting burnt on a game isnt a games fault all the time. Idk lmao, not tryna dick ride a fuckin game.

Boy. The way Dan is talking about RDR2 is exactly what happened to me with GTA4 and RDR1, and I haven’t been able to enjoy a Rockstar game since. They never feel good to play and they only really give you one way to play, which is to be in awe of their masturbatory masterwork. “I think everything about that game that is not a video game is stellar. I think the part where you’re controlling a video game and doing game shit is straight up bad at times.”

It’s always made me so sad I can’t enjoy these games. But from my perspective, nothing has changed between this and RDR1. The Magic has just faded a bit to where Rockstar’s BS is showing a little more.

I think Detective Pikachu's pokemon effects look pretty bad. Semi-realistically-textured and furred versions of traditional cartoon Pokemon designs is some real realistic Mario nightmare. They look like half bad puppets and half weird CG.

But whatever, right? They've made over a dozen feature-length, animated movies. Even when I was a kid and a big fan of the first two gens I got a whopping three movies with a cinematic release over here. I don't mind a live action American noir comedy with wacky CG like twenty years after the first game arrived. It's probably gonna be fun, in a bit of a bland kinda way, and the weird concept and wacky CG is the x-factor that's gonna make it worth watching.

Still very curious about that Super Mario Bros movie the Despicable Me folks are working on.

edit: thanks for trying to talk about smash bros lol, but it's like hearing my grandma when you said you can't tell the difference between Melee and The New One.

Re: emails

XCOM would 100% make a good Saturday morning show. It's got simple characters, lots of toy potential and even already comes in a mission of the week format. Oh no! Snakemen! Hurrah the brave engineers finally got the lasers working, just in time for The Attack of the Mutons!

Or a really heavy HBO/Netflix style thing, it's very flexible!

Dan’s frustration mirrors mine and I’ve only just started chapter 4. I don’t even like the story so idk if I’m going to even finish this. The mission structure is terrible.

The amount of times I’ve set a waypoint and switched to cinematic mode is silly. Just make a proper fast travel system.

@vinny I'm seeing this in both the Beastcast feed and the Bombcast feed in Pocket Casts. It's just listed as "Episode 182" in the Beastcast feed, but it's showing up as "The Giant Beastcast: Episode 182" in the Bombcast feed. Does this mean that the Beastcast will be showing up in the Bombcast feed going forward, or is this just an error?

God Damnit Dan, the capital of Missouri is NOT Columbia. "I lived there" is not a great thing to keep saying when you are completely wrong. And as a Kansas student, COLUMBIA is the first city that comes to mind?!?!?

I can't think of a bigger failure with an open world game than finding yourself trying to read the developer's mind in order to figure out the most rudimentary elements of game mechanics (pathing, boundaries, failure conditions). This seems inevitable with Rockstar's games where you spend hours learning one set of rules that are continually being reinforced by the game world, and then each story mission seems to play by an arbitrary set of rules that can only be probed through trial and error. The most recent example I can think of was trying to play GTA Online's heists a couple years ago.

@esteph: An XCOM show in the visual style of Roughnecks: The Starship Trooper Chronicles and the storytelling style of EXOSquad would be pretty cool. Where yeah, it's kid friendly but also characters are in real danger and occasionally die.
