Did you try the demo? Before I played the demo I was not excited for the combat at all... and once I had, I was. You should try it and see how it feels in practice.

I was surprised how much I liked the "classic mode" combat where the characters attack and defend automatically and you do more strategic stuff via the active pausing menu. I liked how I also had the option of taking complete control for repositioning/attacking/dodging at will, then could let go of the sticks and go back to letting the character auto-pilot their attacks and dodge again when I had done what I wanted.

To me, the "classic mode" removed the feeling of the combat being some sort of weird pseudo reflex-based action game, while not making it be completely hands-off. Of course, it was only the demo so perhaps that changes in the full game.

I really hope this is as good as everyone says. Ordered the Deluxe Edition. Picking it up at curbside Best Buy on Friday. And quarantining the fuck out of it this weekend. Haven't enjoyed a non-MMO Final Fantasy since IX. Bought XV... twice!, but never got around to playing it. Perhaps some day. Looking forward to this. Would've bought it regardless, but glad to hear it's good.

With what they did to the story of this game, calling it a remake is straight up false advertising. It's like Kojima trying to make people think that Solid Snake was the main character of MGS2 back in the day before the game came out. It's pretty messed up.

Sakaguchi was the reason the original was beloved. Nomura really Nomura'd the hell out of this game, and it is really worse off for it.

Having finished seeing the whole story, I agree. For the most part I was enjoying it and the changes/additions didn't disrupt what I remembered of the original, but that last hour or so just launches off the rails. It really feels like this is intended for people who've played the original FFVII, but players who liked VII's story might not enjoy the direction this goes in the end.

@whitegreyblack: I forgot all about the demo. Just played through it on Normal and Classic. Normal seems pretty fun and the boss fight was challenging enough without being excessively hard. Classic mode was also quite fun, but lacked any form of challenge. Especially the boss fight was a walkover. It was dead before I even got a Limit break. If there was a combination of Normal mode with classic controls, I would be interested, but not the way it is now unfortunately.

They are to deep in for me to want to watch more than 5 minutes of this video. I hope they are sensitive about spoilers though. The guys in the black cloaks were in the original too. They played a bigger part on disc 2 at the reunion.

Final Fantasy 7 is not only my favorite game, it is personally important to me too. My best friend Spencer and I bonded by playing the original back in the late 1990s. Spencer passed away in 2012, but this game brings back fond memories of the time we had. I am so glad it turned out well.

Can't believe Ben said he used 16 phoenix downs in a fight and is out of money. My biggest complaint is the game is so easy that it's kind of boring, with the exception of bosses which are amazing. Wish hard mode was an option from the start.

FF7 is my favorite game and this is exactly what I wanted: A fun supplemental game that doesn't try to replace the original. I'm surprised by how good the story, dialog, and characters are considering this is Square. Combat is very fun when it throws a good challenge at you, too. My biggest complaint is the pacing and how slow it is to get around the dungeons with so many Uncharted-style hold stick to move parts that just drag. That and almost every non-boss encounter is so easy that they may as well not exist. Resource management isn't even a thing as you constantly find benches and items.
