Giant Bombcast Game of the Year 2008 Edition

Man this podcast had some heavy stuff discussed.

This was a podcasting tour-de-force.  Best one yet.  I agree with the GTA IV choice, though both are amazing games.  Listening to the four talk and discuss is really these guys at the top of their game.

Why the hell are they so in love with Banjo Kazooie?  Its a great game but come on!  Let it go!

This podcast was great, but i dont really the get the die-hard enthusiam for it, its all about what you want out of the bombcast i guess.

Dang it I had to turn it off early when it seemed like they were going to go all out with the spoilers.  There were two games that I still want to be a surprise on there.  I wish I could listen to the rest of the podcast but I don't want to spoil the games.

Why dont nobody mention the fact that GTAIV had some real framerate issues? I loved the game, but still, its a flaw you can't look past just cuz the game is good

Yeah, thanks for ruining the ending of MGS4 for me, but a good disection of GOTY !!! I guess it came down to realism.

First episode!  I loved your discussion and breakdown of every game.  Glad you picked MGS4 just for the overall quality and "wow" moments.  I have to disagree with the online though.  Once the connection issues were out of the way I thought it was a unique and challenging experience unlike any other online multiplayer.  As for GTA4, I only played about 5 hours of it and the driving camera angle that you talked about and the fact that everything was so dark I kept running into walls, I couldnt get myselt to finish it.  The more I hear about how good it was makes me want to give it another shot,  buuuut probably not.

You know, I never would've guessed that their game of their year choice could actually be game of the year. But I can see where they were coming from with all of those great arguments. Very good podcast.

I don't get why you guys don't like MGS4's and GTA4's online. I love both MGO and Freeplay in GTA.

Banjo Kazooie sos totally should have one, loved the first two and fucking adored the new direction.

Oh and Uncharted 2. Goddamn that game is good. It's so good I forgot it was a real game.

It still suprises me that GTA IV made Jeff cry, he said that it reminded him of some stuff, damn, has Jeff been through some crazy shit?

Went back to listen to this. I still disagree with both the choices. I feel both GTA IV and MGS4 were overrated.

When I look back, it seems that 2008 wasn't that great of a year for gaming. Many overrated and overhyped games that came out that year.

Nice to come back and listen to this. Gta4 was absolutely the GOTY for 2008. Blew every thing else out of the water. Giantbomb knows how to call em.

The only pet peeve that I had with GTA was to relate to the Serbian main character...hopefully next time will be someone that is more western. Even a Brit would do.

think about this... 4 years ago, a GOTY podcast took the GB crew a measly 2 hours and 40 minutes to record... And today a regular ass podcast has an average length of nearly 3 hours... How long we have come

The great thing about going back through these is that A) you don't remember what the hell happened in 2008 and B) you don't remember their conclusions about said year.

@civid thought about it...realized that the last Bombcast was 3 hours 40 minutes, then decided the most standout thing is that your post is the day before my B-Day. It is, however, still an apt observation.

This stuff is absolutely fascinating to re-visit... it's like opening a video game time capsule.

The GOTY podcasts always felt so "unshackled"... they talk more freely about games in these and I feel there's still value in hearing these old arguments -- it helped me put a lot of games in perspective.

For example, I was late to the party with a lot of these games... like, I think I bought Dead Space on a steam sale in 2013 or something, and I didn't think it was all that impressive... same thing with Braid. Kind of makes you appreciate those games in a different way or at the very least see them in a different light. Might also make me boot up some of these older games. Cool.

It's kinda funny that 9 yeard later, Brad and Jeff are still debating the "bad multiplayer" thing. I can appreciate them sticking to their guns. (Brad is right).

... And then Brad kinda defends MGS4's objectification of the female characters. Some things do change.

@adoggz: Back here again in Jan 2020 for my yearly check-in on the old GotY podcasts (a task that only gets more unreasonable with every passing year).

I honestly kind of prefer this format to the multi-episode multi-day ordeal the Game of the Year stuff turned into.
