Playdate: Life is Strange (01/15/2016)

For the people who made the opposite choice at the end wouldn't that be turning Max into a terrible person? Besides everyone she knew there had to be a few babies in the town that were sacrificed. I think Max in that situation, along with most people, would pick town and babies over one person. I also can't see Chloe or Max being able to live with that guilt.

Why couldn't she just evac the whole town?

I had relationships just like Max and Chloe's when I was but an itty bitty baby lesbian teen, so I was surprised that other people were surprised by the potential for romance. I actually thought they executed it very naturally. Part of the reason why Life is Strange was my GOTY is because it took me to the most emotional Nostalgia City ever - like, I wept so, so, so much at the end and throughout because it felt so close to my personal experiences (save for the time travel haha)

@rusalkagirl: For real! As someone who realized she was a bi girl early in high school, Max and Chloe totally push all my mushy teen romance buttons. It's not a perfect relationship (you know, even besides the Sacrifice Chloe/Arcadia Bay thing), but none of the het romances I liked at that age were flawless either!

I agree, I think their romantic relationship was fleshed out wonderfully. 8)

That's super interesting because for a guy its the total opposite problem. Anytime there is any closeness between two guys people assume they are gay rather then just close friends.

As far as it ending in tragedy, having no happy ending was sort of the running theme the whole game so I really saw it coming, as much as I didn't want it too. I totally do need a story with a happily ever after ending now to balance it out though.

That ending really fell apart for me, being faced with the heart-wrenching option and the nuclear option. I get what they were trying to do with the butterfly and the tornado but it seemed like being clever for clever's sake rather than actually giving it a good ending.

The ending shown is just like... okay so the game could've just ended in the first five minutes. That's bad storytelling--nearly everything we saw on screen was for naught, which completely cheapens the *fantastic* emotion invoked throughout the rest of the story! It's another game of 2015 that's absolutely amazing right up until the last few minutes. Man... i'm super bummed out.

@tekzero: Yea, Warren is a love interest. In my game Max and Chloe were just friends and Max warmed up to Warren big time.

I saved Chloe and I would do it every time if I replayed this a million times over, especially after watching that ending play out. I don't care which is the right choice, it's the right choice for me!

I haven't cried at an ending since TWD Season 1. Fuck.

Seriously, thank you guys for playing this. I had bought the Season Pass when just Episode One was out after playing the demo, and I only got as far as episode 2 before something scared me away, or I moved on to another game.

This game should have not been ignored, and I learned my lesson. Now, it's my 2015 game of the year, and I've been playing it again, seeing how the different choices make tiny and big differences throughout the story. I even wrote a fan fiction, being so inspired by that ending. No regrets, people seem to love it.

Thank you for going through that game, and I hope to see more sleeper hits being played by you guys.

That was an affecting series. Well done, Beasties, well done.

The absolute worst part remains, in that I feel incredibly sympathetic towards Nathan and how fucked up he is. The combination of his call to Max just before his death, plus watching how much he panics at the end after shooting... It's a tragic story about Chloe and Max, but between the major beats of the story, I think it's ultimately really about the tragedies of Nathan and Kate.

Was going to post pretty much the same thing. The anime is good, but the visual novel is downright incredible.

Been watching these having finally played through the game over the break. Damn that ending still drove it's sodding knife into me second time around.

Definitely on my greatest games of all time list.

This game is so good.

Watching the quick look for the second game made me want to give the first one a chance and led me to watching this whole series. Such a cool feature and such an awesome game. Can't wait to play 2.

The choice they made at the end was ROUGH. Me and my daughter chose the other option which made sense to me as it was a choice to live with the consequences of the decisions you make.

Man, I still love this game so much. The writing is awkward but really charming, and even though I agree that the last episode is a little weird I still cried like a baby at the ending. Props to Dontnod for pulling it off.

Something I found kinda interesting was the way a few things play out differently if you go with Warren. Brooke, the girl with the drone, is totally pissed at you when you and Chloe are searching for Nathan - she stops letting you use her drone, and she makes a snide comment suggesting that Max wants to be with Nathan if you ask about him. During the weird, psychedelic sequence during this episode, when Chloe and Warren kiss, Chloe says something about how you're trying to play both of them. Also, apparently you don't kiss Chloe at the very end after the final decision - they just hug a few times before Max goes back in time to the bathroom.

I'm really curious to see how Season 2 pans out. It's a shame we probably won't get an actual playthrough of it on GB (though I can hope that they'll do it once episode 5 comes out), but I'm looking forward to playing through it once I'm done with Before the Storm.

This game is a testament to how charm and earnestness can really break through things like awkward writing. I chose to save Chloe, cause that's what a teenager in that situation would do, and was a little disappointed that it's very clearly not the ending they expect you to go with.

There's SO MUCH MORE in the "canon" ending, and it's still a REALLY great one filled with its own kind of temporal tragedy and pain, but I do wish they'd gone with a little more balance between the two.
