Comparing this to The Game Awards 2021, it surprised me with how little has changed.

I didn't hate Leslie Nielsen in this, surprisingly.

The DNA of this show can still be seen in the current Game Awards show. The nonsensical categories, dumb skits, meaningless celebrity appearances, and ads for games that have been a part of this since this show was on Spike TV are all here. Seeing Geoff Keighley's name in the credits makes perfect sense; it looks like this show made such a lasting impression on him that he's been trying to recreate it for decades.

This whole pro-hacker thing didn't age well.

I instantly recognized the stage as the "Castle Theatre" where they had a Conan stunt action show. That and the segment where Leslie Nielsen sees their Doc Brown, the Delorian, and a visit to the old west stunt show stage sure does show the "use every part of the Universal Studios theme park buffalo" nature of the production.

And yeah, Naked Gun 33 1/3 was March of 1994 which was the one that ended at their own awards ceremony so yeah, they were certainly gunning for a Frank Drebin vibe at times. Heck, the old west stunt scene had some knock-off Naked Gun theme vibes to it.

Can't wait for the Imagine Dragon's version of Cyber Generation at next year's Game Awards.

I used to go visit my bio-father in Vegas during the early 90s, the arcades were LEGIT. I think back to back they built Excalibur, MGM, then Luxor and all had stellar arcades. Luxor was always my favorite though, the ambience was cool.

Edit: Wear suspenders every day. Can't wear a belt; I have a "cracker ass", in that my ass is shaped like a cracker.

Bring back this style of music for awards shows. It rules.

This makes me wanna say: "bring back Game Tapes, you cowards!"

@chamurai: it is the Jethro Tull of these awards for sure. Beating Ken Griffey and NBA Jam?! I’ve never even heard of it! It’s almost like Cybermania 94 didn’t know what they were doing.

PLEASE do a show where you just watch old commercials

This made me remember the whole "guy in a giant balloon" bit was very popular in the 90s for some reason. These were simpler times

Old commercials are the best part of watching this type of stuff. When they started airing 90s Nickleodeon shows again a few years back, I was like this is fun and all but I wish they had the old commercials too.

Geoff Keighley had already been reviewing video games for 2 years before being asked to be a product consultant on this show. He started reviewing games from his bedroom as a freelancer when he was 13. Working on this show was apparently where his dream of creating something like this a reality started. Something that wasn't just a joke and was by and for people who actually cared about games.

I wish every video on YouTube was Cybermania
