Giant Bombcast 03/17/2015

As St. Patrick scourges the land, we hunker down in our bunker to discuss adventures in civic planning, the glut of dumb cop-show games, Final Fantasies of all stripes, Ori and the Delightful Difficulty, the return (?) of Joe Montana, further uses for liquid cocaine, D&D death rituals, and more!

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

If it weren't for the usual energy system garbage the 'endless runner' Crazy Taxi mobile game would be shockingly alright.

@puaru: Brad pronounces the silent "h" in words that start with a "w" sometimes and I always wonder why nobody calls him on the most widely joked about mispronunciation in the English language.

Do anyone know the website Jeff was on about? A matchmade friendslist sounds pretty cool, but I am not sure how to google for it.

I usually put up with all the negativity that comes from Jeff regarding virtually every video game ever made in the past 6 or 7 years, the arrogance that stems from Dan about anything outside of AMMERICA and wrestling, and lack of knowledge about new video games that comes from Brad, who supposedly gathers the news but doesn't really pay attention to any of them but in this one they really went above and beyond in painting a grim future for the state of video game industry and Jeff took a very very hipster bullshit cheap shot against The Last of Us which made me kind of angry.

I love these guys and have been listening to the podcast for the past 5 years and been a premium member for a year now and watched all the content they put up on the site, some of them repeatedly. But nowadays whenever I listen to the podcast, it seems like it consists of these parts:

Jeff talks about some video games he have played and HATES all of them which results in him saying: "What the FUCK are you doing?" to the absent developer and Brad follows it up by saying: "Holly Shiiit" and starts laughing. Brad reads the news and in the midst of the conversation a name for a famous person or event (someone or something that would have to be taught at school to kids!) and then Dan says: "Who (or what) is that?". That again prompts Brad to say: "Holy Shiit!" and he starts laughing. At the end of the news, Jeff says that he hates a famous and very well-made video game that is beloved so that he proves that he's different from the pack.

For a bunch of people who keep complaining about staleness and stagnant state of video games, their own podcast has got the same issues. Seriously guys, do you even like video games or is it time for you to step down and let some new people with fresh ideas in and take the mantle from you? Seriously think about it.

Please have Jason on the podcast more often. He's a great counterpoint to Dan and keeps him grounded in reality.

Brad is insane, no one pronounces the "L" in yolk.

I mean, yeah, "yolk" and "yoke" are pretty much homonyms, though yes, the Bombcrew is right to criticize Dan for making it to 30 without somehow learning what a yoke is.

Ok, seriously, am I the only one who has noticed that Brad always- ALWAYS- pronounces the L in "talk" so it sounds like "tawlk"? There was zero chance he was going to pronounce "yolk" correctly.

But yeah, this plays a factor, because Brad says all kinds of silent Ls, and also says "compass" real crazy.

I don't think the 3+ hour Bombcast works anymore, it's bloated and stale. If GBeast is starting a podcast, then it would be sensible to cut the Bombcast to two hours or less.

I remember Brad being interested in bringing in more guests with different perspectives, whatever happened to that? I'm guessing the length turns most people off.

@brendan: he also puts emphasis on sounds that no one else does. Listen to him say the word "thanksgiving". It's cute though to hear a good ole boy from Carolina try to tell someone they aren't speaking English properly.

Why would the length turn people off when you don't have to listen to all of it?

I have two graduate degrees (one in History) and I didn't know what a yoke was offhand. I refuse to believe that all of the people commenting on that ...actually knew immediately what a "yoke" was. I'm not saying I have never heard the term (I am sure I have) but I didn't recall it right away. It's not that common of a word.

@viking_funeral: ff7 was an event/experience for its time though i only watched a large amount of it being played. Even though for me it marked the beginning of the end of what i liked about the series i can admit being caught up in the moment as hard as everyone else. Also dem summons.

Oddly enough, though I didn't enjoy FF7 as much as VI, I still found it an enjoyable game. FF8 was the beginning of the end for me. That's when it seemed like they had little idea of how to proceed after having a massive hit. Ah, well. What could have been.

I can't believe that any FF fans as well at the GB guys starting hating the series at 7 or going downhill?....9, 10, and 12 were all amazing to me and critical hits.

Loved the Bombcast once again! And my dad used to play video games with me all the time when he was alive. He would actually practice when I wasn't with him over the week so he could kick my ass when I came to visit on the weekends.

@slang_n_bang: I highly doubt the length would turn people off being guests on the podcast. The difference between 2 and 3 hours isn't that big, and the Bombcast is one of the most popular gaming podcasts in the world.

@slang_n_bang: the Bombcast is huge, I think people would make the time for it. Have to imagine that it comes from GB not reaching out (which I think is a huge mistake; the site since Bombin' ended has been way too insular).

As a linguist (student still) standing in his non-existent ivory tower of the people, these discussions on 'proper' pronunciation (and spelling) always irk me slightly in a single-mosquito-on-the-arm sort of way, because the people have a will of their own.

Naturally, if strict uniformity of (informal) language is what one wishes to unleash upon the world like a good ol' fascist, then I understand. I, however, sure enjoy freedom and creativity - things that are central in the continuous (d)evolution of language.

"Insert a smiley face here to lighten up the mood of your piece a bit so you won't come across as too much of a pompous asshole, even if it may have an adverse effect on some of those reading." OK. :)

Jeff probably couldn't be any more wrong about X-2. That game is truly delightful from start to finish. It does get a little tiresome to listen to stubborn old men ramble on about things they can't be bothered to understand.

The garment grid is not a difficult gameplay system to understand. The sphere grid in X wasn't either, but he had trouble with that too for some reason.

Also agree that Jason is great for hearing somebody talk about a video game intelligently. It ain't even this dude's job to play games in front of a camera and he gives more games a fair shake than anybody else on the team.

Jeff never played FFXI, eh? There's no clicking on enemies till they die in that game. The combat is mostly menu- and keyboard-driven. Also hotkey scripting/macros past level 20 or so.

I'll say it again: Just make Jason a permanent member of the podcast already.

Not only is his bickering with Dan fun, he also has interesting opinions on things/games and is good at holding discussions about things, which makes him perfect for this.

I find the singling out of consoles for a lack of AAA titles in favor of smaller downloadable things to be strange. That's pretty much what gaming is now. There's something to be said for asking what the hell SCEA or Microsoft Studios are doing, but the bigger issue is that AAA gaming is increasingly rare, largely unsustainable due to the costs, and devoid of any innovation due to the required investments. There aren't AAA games of quality anywhere.

If you're pissed at spending $400 on a console that plays mostly great $10-20 games and the occasional stale $60 big budget title, then you should be just as pissed at spending $800+ on a PC to play the exact same games. It's not a problem specific to the consoles by any means.

Question: Does Dan realize the hypocrisy in his complaints about Monster Hunter's controls yet his constant apologizing for Metal Gear controls?
