Easy strategy to beat the Skulls: Quiet with her strongest Sniper rifle. It takes her like 3 shots to destroy their armor, and about the same to kill. So, just equip the heavy armor suit to tank their smallgun-fire, shoot any rock projectiles they throw, and just kite them around the open area. If you get good at countering their melee attacks, it goes even faster. (Their jumping attack is super easy to counter, but I had some difficulty getting the regular swipe attack to counter correctly unless I stood perfectly still.)

The only problem is that Quiet doesn't focus one Skull at a time, and usually chooses her target randomly from who's close to you (unless you manually target them in first-person mode). But once one or two drop, She takes care of the rest without a problem.

Why do I get the impression that Dan is judging the entire quality of MGSV as a game just by watching Drew play? I mean, I didn't see him do that with the other games. Sorry, but MGSV is not a fun movie to simply watch like the other games.

It's not a movie-game like the other games. It's a game that benefits more from the player immersing themselves into the mechanics and world through their own actions. I think simply rushing through the main missions and not developing the base, listening to cassettes, doing core side missions, etc is a poor way to enjoy the game. Honestly, Metal Gear Scanlon V was a mistake. I know there is an audience they want to entertain, so that's why they simply rush through the story, but it really undermines a lot of what the game is about.

I don't think he does. He did have a very established opinion of the game before they started this 'season'. Besides it was his second best game of the year on his listt (after Super Mario Maker) and that was after they had already shot something like 17 episodes.

10 cans of soda a day? Goddamn that's a lot.

It certainly is a lot, but that being said, I'm absolutely convinced that some people can drink that much soda (diet soda at least) without any problem whatsoever. Most of this stuff seems to boil down to individual genetics and Dan is propably one of the lucky ones in this regard.

Kinda like some people can't eat 3 eggs a week without their cholesterol shooting through the roof and some people can eat 12 eggs a day no problem.

I'd understand the complaining if you were railroaded into this mission, but the game actually gives you a very clear Out with the To Be Continued business so you can do a bunch of side ops, earn some money, do some research and take it on full lethal. People always complain that you research all these lethal guns that aren't useful for most of the sneaking styled gameplay - this is why you were developing them. If after this fight you don't get a clue that you might need to do some additional research for future boss encounters then I dunno what to tell you.

Took me one retry. Saw what the mission was about, restarted, and brought in D-Walker with a minigun. Cut them down quickly. Went back afterwards to see if I could complete the mission by draining their stamina instead, taking the twin-barrel air shot shotgun and a riot SMG. Takes a lot longer, and gave up after downing and fultoning two of them. The amount of stamina the Skulls have on hard makes the task so long it isn't worth doing with the same loadout.

I love hearing about the other ways people have beaten this mission. It's good to see others taking the creative route over the comparatively dull method of "Hop in D-Walker with minigun, mow everything down".

I'm with the countering camp. I tried rockets and grenades, then after failing a couple times noticed the R2 prompt. Easy after that, you just bait them one at a time. Still had to run around a bit to split them up, though. Not a fun mission.

@hatking: At one point Kojima was thinking of calling Peace Walker "MGS5". Even though its a PSP game, it's still a fully featured MGS in my mind. Unlike, say, Portable Ops, which Kojima didn't really recognize as part of the series. And all the official timelines posted by KojiPro/Konami on Facebook/Twitter etc have included Peace Walker, but not Revengeance or Portable ops.

MGSV builds upon PW's formula, so I can see why there is some similarity with the boss's being mainly bullet sponges rather than puzzles. In both games, there the boss encounters have a similar formula with iterative versions (snipers from mission 29 is just the Quiet fight again, except there's four of them and in a different setting). Although I think the Metal Gears from PW have more character to them than the zombie Skulls.

But getting those CQC counters is damn fun.

@kasaioni: Oh damn, I totally got the missions mixed up, 31 is the one that requires research. 30 is...well without going into too much at this point, yes it is supposedly a tense mission for sure, but one that bombard can also help a great deal. There's a fairly easy path through it as well, and there's also a very very cheap and cheesy method that I employed.

@soimadeanaccount: I went through that mission at night with a sneaking suit and tranqs etc. I went through the story by trying to S-rank everything (so no air support) while also not getting spotted, so I found it to be both fun and challenging.

Saw a few others mention it, but D-Walker makes this mission pretty trivial. I died a couple of times before looking up some tips, one site suggested D-Walker and they were right, his guns tear through the Skulls pretty easily.

Drew is missing out on a shit ton of explanation/context by not listening to the tapes. It really bugs me.

They used to spend plenty of time on the codec in the other games. It's really easy to listen to the tapes while doing side ops too so no real excuse.

If you just put on some Battle Armor and bring a Machine Gun you can tear through their armor real fast. Machine Guns are boss killers. They're better guns at damage than Assault Rifles are.

Are these still happening? Jesus...

I hope when this is over the boys put out some better content, aside from funding my favourite duders on the internet I feel like I threw a year of premium down the drain with the MGS vids.

@the_last_starfighter: You're in the minority with that opinion. Besides before Dan joined GB the scale and amount of premium content had been super weak for a while, so I don't really know what you're talking about. Dan basically single handedly almost doubled the amount of premium content when he joined (since then it seems to have spread out more with GBeast and others.)

Of course if you don't enjoy the new content, it propably doesn't add any value in your eyes, that I understand.

I wish Dan would've told Drew he can quit the mission, go back to the ACC, and choose some weapons(maybe a better companion too) that would actually have made the fight simpler. Would've saved them a bunch of time. Fight smarter, not harder gents.

Out of all the things Dan has said or done, this one is the most concerning to me. All that Taco Bell crap is bad for you, but drinking ten cans of soda a day is straight up dangerous. You'd be worried if your friend had 10 cans of beer a day, and maybe even more worried when talking about soda.

Fun T2 fact about Robert Patrick's role as T-1000:

Patrick had to learn to fire a gun without blinking (watch to try and catch him do it - he never does once throughout the entire film) and run at full sprint without appearing winded on close-ups or looking exhausted afterward. James Cameron stated these little touches would make the T-1000 character's behavior appear more machine-like.

Not necessarily if it's diet soda (and if I remember at all correctly Dan mainly drinks diet versions nowadays). There's no definitive proof that high amounts of artificial sweetener cause any problems worth mentioning. Sure there's the cancer "risk" as is in pretty much everything these days. Just like inhaling air is a cancer "risk". What I'm saying is that it's basically the same as drinking lots of carbonated water.

Regular sugary soda is a whole different story though.

I didn't have that much trouble with this mission. I thought it was neat they finally had a mission that allowed you to go full lethal without dumbing down the game where you couldn't be creative. The hard mode version which I eventually completed for kicks was pretty annoying, but not that bad once I used some heavy weaponry. There is one mission I don't like though...don't know if I'll every get all the objectives on that any time soon. But about 49 of 50 missions being good for me ain't bad.

I was talking regular soda, but now that I think about it and look at the evidence, it seems that he mostly drinks diet soda now. So not as bad as I'd feared, but still concerning.

@danryckert: Fight Club holds up surprisingly well. I was in the exact same mindset as Dan once sufficient time had passed since the last time I watched the movie, assuming my enjoyment of it came exclusively from buying into that cult crap. Turns out that with a little bit of distance and perspective, it becomes a fascinating character-study, and a pretty grim look at the lack of purpose a lot of young people feel in these modern days, as well as cult phenomena. I actually think it's a far better movie now that I realize what a hypocrite Tyler Durden is compared to back when I idolized him as a teen. Also, that movie is still just fucking gorgeous to look at.

I feel like people have such a different reaction to Fight Club depending on what version they come to first.

I remember hearing about all the hubbub around the movie when it came out, but never saw it. Ended up reading the book in maybe like 2004 or 2005 (this was my late teens), then saw the movie a year or so later. In the book, you get a sense of Tyler as this charismatic guy who certainly has his worldview figured out and makes a compelling argument for it, but you can see it for what it is and it's not perfect. The narrator talks a big game about Tyler, but I always got the sense that that had as much to do with the narrator's own low self confidence as it did with Tyler himself.

Also, it's hard to call it a cult when the fight club itself was kinda decentralized and had a bunch of chapters and Durden wasn't this corrupt dude who was raking in a bunch of money at the center of it all. It was just this weird nihilist hangout session for dudes who want to reclaim their masculinity or something. Then Project Mayhem was more cult like, but again pretty decentralized and I think you were meant to think that the guys involved with it believed as much in the vision and goal of the group as they did in Tyler, and that whole thing was more like an anarchist group, or an anti-establishment militia/terrorist group thing. Even as a somewhat disillusioned youth, Durden and his vision (early and later in the book) wasn't something that I ever looked at and said "Yeah, fuck everything, he's onto something, why don't we just do something like that." It's weird to me that a lot of people did have that reaction to the movie.

As much as I think the movie improves on the source material in a number of ways, I think the big problem with the movie was that Brad Pitt was too cool in that movie. That movie made him like, the James Dean of that generation. I think in the book, you get the sense that the people who followed Durden must be following him because his "fuck society" ideas appealed to them, but in the movie it's like "of course people are following that dude and listening to him, because look how fucking cool he is compared to Edward Norton." It feels like way more people who saw the movie as their first exposure actually bought into what the Fight Club and Project Mayhem were about, whereas I feel like the book does a better job of making you think "Yeah, ok, modern day dudes have lame office jobs and have never been in a fistfight, I get you, but is it really better if dudes instead regularly get into no-holds-barred gladiatorial fistfights, just for the sake of some old notion of masculinity? And then hey, let's go bomb some buildings, because chaos, why not?"

Also worth mentioning that in the book, some people get like, really fucking beat up to the point of being somewhat disfigured, whereas in the movie the shirtless fights kinda just look too cool, and everybody just gets Hollywood-bruised up, so I'd also say the movie kinda missed that point of the book. They wanted to get a little disfigured because they were completely opting out of society and wanted to be ugly outsider weirdos that people avoided talking to. I'm glad the movie at least preserved some of the homoerotic overtones, since forcibly making yourself that much of an outsider disfigured weirdo is not going to get you much pussy, and there sure are a lot of shirtless dudes hanging out with shirtless dudes in that book.

The more I played this game overtime, the more I hate how it turned out. All of the dumb research changing to the online bit, almost forcing you to play online and even to the point where you would have to buy MB coins is pretty stupid.

I think the first time I beat this mission, I equipped the heaviest weapons I had (auto grenade launcher/machine gun) and just ran around spamming resupply flares and unloading whenever possible. It was pretty tough, IIRC.

Later on, if you carry acceleramin and the Serval (semi-auto heavy sniper), this mission becomes trivial - you can constantly pop slowmo and unload headshots into the Skulls without really giving them a chance to even attack. I think the development costs are pretty steep, though.

Also, multiple C4s stack damage, so planting enough in the same spot (I think 4-5) can kill the Skulls in one hit. You can also plant a mine next to the C4 to jury-rig your own super-mines. I saw this technique in a YouTube video for one of the special event FOB missions, it's fantastic.

@sto_ln: It's pretty dumb because the original justification for MB coins was that it was for people who are short on time. Yet all of the original weapons in the game can't be sped up with MB coins. Nor can regular Motherbase development. And nor can offline deployments.

The only people who are engaging with the part of the game that allows one to use MB coins (and encourages it) are the people who have time to continue to play the game. The other playerbase they were supposedly targeting with MB coins is playing the Witness now in sessions after they come home from work. It's so dumb.

If you're on PC, use cheat engine to at least bypass having to gather resources if you ever consider developing rank 7-9 weapons and equipment. And just wait for development, don't ever by any MB coins. Use MB coins you may have gotten from daily login bonuses to by new waters maybe; since that's the only way to get new waters without spending any money.

But those rank 7-9 weapons are overpowers for single player any ways. Which makes them fun I gues, but that rank 8 tranq sniper puts people to sleep in one second from anywhere in the body. Jesus, who needs Quiet anymore with that?

All that being said, I don't think the experience of this game has changed at all regarding the single player offline experience. No requirements have changed or new influences added for anything relevant to 100%-ing that game.

"I feel like I would walk away from a plane crash" -Dan

I have a phobia of flying. I know how planes work mechanically. I studied it in hopes of calming my anxiety. How can Dan Ryckert, who apparently has suffered heavily from anxiety, not be anxious of flying? I feel like I was on such the same page about his anxiety when he spoke about it... I guess honestly feeling that you just end up okay no matter what would definitely minimize fear of flying.

Maybe I just need to start picturing myself surviving plane crashes.

EDIT: On topic, this fucking mission. Only way I could finally beat it was luckily RPGing the shit out of everyone and hiding on the rooftop with continual supply drops. It was so lame.

This episode is the first time I realized the decoys say "Kept you waiting, huh?" and that's amazing.
