Nintendo could make a console with the power of 4 RTX 2080Ti's and 2 Threadrippers, and the Pokémon Company would still make DS-looking games, with no voice acting.

Sorry but as a fan of Roguelike Bed looking at the game and being confused (could just be a act sorry) is kind of funny. Dude...that's how Rogue plays. Roguelike are actually turn base grid like dungeon crawlers. The stuff you been playing like Dead Cells aren't really Roguelike they just have bits of elements of them but they aren't Roguelikes (at least to me).

@agemyth: Jan mentioned it being a roguelike around 04:00 but I think he was trying to avoid using the term for most of the video since the game lacks a lot of elements of modern "roguelites".

Sea horse females deposit their eggs in to a pouch on the males' bodies, where the eggs are fertilized. The live young stream out a few weeks later. Nature's weird. :)

I've never played any of the Mystery Dungeon games but I've heard others talk about how much they like them but I'm missing the appeal of this one. $60 also seems like maybe a lot. Anyway, great quick look guys. ^.^

Not a Pokemon guy but I've always been curious about these games as Shiren the Wanderer is one of my favorite SNES games. It easily gets my vote for the most overlooked game on the system and has elements I love of Dark Souls and Spelunky decades before those games. There is a QL of a sequel on the site for any curious. I love the mystery dungeon format but I'm not into how this one is based on small missions. I love how in Shiren you are just going into this massive dungeon, with things changing the deeper you go.

Just because roguelikes apparently make me That Guy

Autoplay/auto-explore is a very common feature of the more turn based run-based roguelikes. The logic being that you're going to die/repeat dungeons a LOT and generally all you care about is getting all the loot and POIs before going to the transition point. So rather than force the player to navigate and decide if they follow the left or right wall (always left!!!) , just hold Z until you enter combat or start to drown.

I don't think I have ever played a roguelike with dash/speed-up mode but I can imagine that being a concession more to the console side of things where it is weird to not hold a d-pad direction.

And the combat and energy bar are bog standard.

Still doesn't look like a particularly great game. But most of the "wait, what?" moments are just standard to the genre.

Huh, really? I know both nethack and stone soup has a "continue until interrupted" walking ( https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Movement )

@agemyth said:

Rogue-likes have really come a long way since this series came out. So far in fact that I don't think Jan or Ben mentioned "rogue-like" or "rogue-lite" at all in that video which is something that seems inevitable when doing videos on these kinds of games. Not saying they needed to say the words. I just find a tiny bit of amusement that this super-traditional-rogue-inspired dungeon crawler is sorta not what people think of anymore when we talk about the genre.

Totally. It made me feel a bit sad that they seem to think that the mystery dungeon series started with Pokemon or Chocobo, when it has been around since the early super famicom era, being one of the first mainstream console roguelikes, with 30 odd games in the series now ( https://www.giantbomb.com/mystery-dungeon/3025-793/ ).

I do hope @benpack and @janman enjoyed the small taste of one the game series that traditionally defined the roguelike genre. If for nothing else than to give insight about how weird that the genre name went from describing these chesslike type of games to the likes of "Dead Cells" and what not.

Came to comments to complain about Ben and Jan's confusion about what an actual Roguelike is, but the comments already had me covered, gj family

Yes, the Mystery Dungeon games are a take on more traditional games like Rogue and Nethack and not what modern "roguelikes" and "roguelites" are, which don't resemble those original games at all outside of pretty broadly adapted design elements. When Jan suggested that games like this must be played for their story due to the fact that they have auto battle I had to chuckle

You probably shouldn't draw such broad conclusions about the difficulty from the very beginning of the game! Even setting aside the postgame, this game gets tough! But fortunately you can just grind it out until you're strong enough to get through the story, unlike typical "true" roguelikes.

Visually this looks pretty awful. thick jaggy black lines, blurry backgrounds, all floors looked the same. Squirtle running around with his arms out wide, and gliding around on a dime looks very silly. Even in the cutscenes they all stick to their 1 animation. Oh after 75% of the video they remarked this was a remake, so i guess that explains the visuals. Still... 60$! I'm not entirely sure what they changed apart from the visuals & UI.

Ben mentioned that the existance of auto-explore probably means that the game focuses on the story. That's not necessarily the case. Games like Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup use auto-explore, and those kind of games are light on story & very dense with various decisions to build up your character. Choosing race, class, What kind of armor & weapons they use, which stats they focus their training on, which god you allign with et cetera. Because all these decisions and the loot you find are the focus of the game, the actual movement throughout the floors doesn't matter as much most of the time. Sadly with this game it seems like the decisions you make is very limited and focuses entirely on the team composition.

I'm not sure what their verdict is though. Jan said it was a weird game, but at the same time he doesn't seem to mind playing this. They joked about it being a one handed game that nearly plays itself, but didn't necessarily call it out as a good or bad thing. I understand that you can showcase a game without having to trash or praise it and let the audience make up their own mind, but i'd still like to know if Jan actually enjoys this game or thinks it's a decent remake for the 60$.

This seems like a reskin of Azure Dreams (1997, PS1), just without some of the coolest features. Does anyone know which was the first one of these type of games?

@gaston: Well, it kinda depends on what you mean by “these type” but I think the best answer for what you probably mean is the Super Famicom game Torneko no Daibouken: Fushigi no Dungeon, a spin-off of Dragon Quest and the first game in what we now know as the “Mystery Dungeon” series. It’s only in Japanese but there is a fan translation. For something available in English you might want to look at Shiren the Wanderer on the DS, it is a remake of the second game in the series. Azure Dreams was definitely inspired by that franchise.

@shiro2809: Point is, it's another lazy Pokémon game, that should look much better given the hardware it's running on. And should definitely have voice acting to some degree. Nintendo in general relies on speech bubbles in their games way too much.

$60 is way too much for me, but if it's like the rest of the Mystery Dungeon series, there should be a lot of content, at least. Maybe it'll spark some enthusiasm for more traditional Rogue-likes. I love a good dungeon crawl.
