This might be a good game for me. I feel so disconnected from history that when I think "World War I," my thought isn't of the inhumanity and death of people on both sides, but the final scene from the last series of "Blackadder."

I waited up all night for this one! Still debating if I will bother or not with this or Titanfall since to be honest the only single player campaign I'm interested in is the new call of duty. I just can't really get into the giant open map get sniped from 100 yards away games anymore.

Really unfortunate that they don't have a chapter from the central powers perspective. And like Vinny and Alex point out it's really weird that the French are missing. Hell, why not have one from the Ottoman and Russian viewpoints too? Feels like they just made a WWII game with the usual bad guys and a WWI skin.

'War never changes' would be a far better slogan for the Battlefield series than for Fallout, where war has clearly gone *bananas*.

Not really, you play as the Italians in some of the missions and the Italians were more or less "bad guys" in WWII.

How's that difference from the inhumanity and death of WW1?

Except that the Italians were part of the Allies in WWI, so you're still only seeing the war from one perspective here. And I agree that it's really, really weird to not have the French as part of the game. I mean, not having Russia makes a certain amount of sense if the campaign starts with the Americans, since by the time the US entered the war Russia was well on its way to being out of it, but the French were in it all the way through.

The premium pass is expensive but its also got a lot of content. the base game comes with the campaign and 9 maps and the season pass is promising 16 maps on top of new weapons and cosmetic stuff.

This seems more like WWII with different outfits...at least from what I've read and was taught. Also, the gameplay looks a little tired and boring, but that might be because I play too much Overwatch. I'm sure if you're into this sort of game it's totally fine though.

8 hours of play and never received a single squad command. Never heard a single voice in chat. Maps are pretty bland and same-y. The blimps and ships that come in and turn the tide for the losing team are obnoxious and kind of not worthwhile, and . . . all in all, it's actually probably * worse* than BF4, which I disliked so much, I stopped by about the 20th hour.

@falk: The French and Russian armies are going to be in the game but as dlc. I think the French is the first pack coming out sometime in March and the Russians later on.

@falk: Since the first DLC is French and Russian forces, I feel like they will throw in a mission or two. I would hope they do the same with the central powers.

I was a little bummed we never got the traditional trench warfare short story. Hopefully we will get a "Paths of Glory" or "All Quiet on the western front" episode later.

Had I been responsible for the campaign, the first mission would be you as a German soldier manning a Maxim machine gun, looking over no man's land. It would be a misty, silent morning. Then whistles would blow and a tide of Brits would start running at you from the fog.

Games these days have all the technology and budget, yet so many can't tell even the simplest story effectively.

Gotta be honest here, from what Vinny has shown of the single player stuff, it seems quite sparse and not very engaging at all. All the praise it has gotten i guess i just cant see.

On another note, i find it very funny that the first thing they had to do when switching to multiplayer was to mute other players.

The player seems absurdly tanky in the campaign, even without the magical bullet-proof armor (which didn't exist or there wouldn't be a need to invent tanks).

EDIT: Also do both sides use the same guns in MP? That seems weird...

@mmarsu: I bought the game and I am happy at what is included for $60. I think the base game is worth the entry price. The single player was surprisingly good and the new operations mode is great and has some neat story/historical bits.

As far as the armies included I think it was a cool move to focus on some different armies than the classic French, Russian, German, American, British combo. I think they struck a nice balance between familiar countires and other countries whose involvement is not as well known(at least in the US. We barely touch WWI in public schools). It is nice they will be adding armies with their respective armamanes along with maps instead of just faceless guns with some new locations. I don't think the dlc plan is asking too much of people that want more.

I'm very impressed with how this game looks. And that really happens rarely. Just the locations look believable from their architecture / geometry. Like that forest. Real good. Also stuff like the sand storm and so on feel amazing.

@raikoh05: it's been pretty standard for shooters. COD and BF4 in particular - BF seems (to me) to justify their pass pretty well as the maps are always huge, and I personally like the big mix up that comes when a new map comes out. They also usually bring some new weapons and vehicles as some flare.

@mmarsu I don't get how stating what comes in a season pass objectively is defending it. 4 maps per expansion, more weapons and vehicles, cosmetics and other stuff is what you get for $50 - if you don't like the deal don't take it. Typically the people that buy the season pass will play the game over the course of the next year fairly consistently. God forbid someone likes something you don't, even if they have to pay a company like EA for it.

I appreciate this. I feel like BF1 is similar to Gears 4, in that it's a pretty bland game that is for some reason receiving praise from journalists/press. I was so hyped for Gears 4, and then was incredibly let down by the lame campaign that basically has you doing the same crap as the first three games. I also wasn't a fan of BF4 (loved BF3 though), and I was underwhelmed when I played the beta for BF1.

While the armor (which did exist) was nowhere near that effective (it'd stop a pistol bullet at most), even if it was you would still want tanks.

Weapons are shared in MP because otherwise there would be a huge imbalance, as not every faction has every type of gun. There is no American or British SMG, for example.

For the life of me, I couldn't understand why this beta was getting so much praise when every other FPS beta in the last month was being trashed. It's especially confusing after watching some post-release videos when this looks like it's achingly similar to WW2-style gameplay with a WWI coat of paint. What I've learned is that people who like the Battlefield series REALLY like it, and they'll evangelize it to no end.

Also, am I the only one that finds the multiplayer progression in large BF maps to be long periods of getting to the battle punctuated by a disorienting instant death? If I spawn on a squad member, at least I'm more frequently in the battle, but then I'm just dying over and over quicker. i guess I need to git gud.

Yeah, it's expensive but they usually go on sale a few months after release. I usually wait until everything is out and the price goes down to around 30 bucks. Or around 40 if I'm hurting for more content. It's totally reasonable at that price and the people willing to spend 50 on it... well, that's on them and they get what they pay for so no harm no foul in my opinion.

"Jeroen51" immortalised in death.

.

For anyone wondering, that armoured machine gunner stuff is complete fantasy. (Which makes the preceding scene all the more hilarious.)

They just re-appropriated some historical stuff and then combined it into that very silly power armour type of configuration.

I completely disagree. BF1 has a very different feel than BF4. Blimps, ships and trains don't necessarily turn the tide but they change the landscape of a map dramatically. You start most games in a good looking city, desert town or country side but as the match progresses and as those big vehicles come in the map gets turned into some bombed out hellscape. Shell holes provide more cover while buildings get almost completely obliterated. The environmental destruction is really impressive from a gameplay and immersion perspective.

As for ''never received a single squad command. Never heard a single voice in chat''. Yo, play with people you know. Build a squad with GB community members. The game is pretty incredible when you run a full well coordinated squad.

Good teamwork, 2 medics to a squad and communication is the key.

Most people use teamspeek since you cant set the mic to open in BF1

That thing where they make you fight but you are "scripted" to lose because they enemies will keep spawning? Yeah, that would have been my first and last mission in this game. I am not even the one playing it and I am furious at that BS.

And then it does it again....
