@dasakamov: the idea that DIC Entertainment in the 1980s have more ownership over Nintendo canon than .. Nintendo, is a very bold take !

it's the mushroom kingdom! there's weird turtle monsters everywhere. and some of them stand up right and throw hammers at you. some of them ride smiling flying clouds (literally with a smiling face on them) and drop these weird red shell monster things with spikes on them at you. and the monsters have this evil overlord which is essentially a giant turtle that lives in a castle filled with lava and the turtle monster can breathe fire and also throw hammers.

the mushroom people are exactly that. they're people made of mushroom.

in the context of that DIC Entertainment cartoon, i'm pretty sure it was just a visual gag anyway more than anything, anyway.
