This game is manipulative and evil.

I don't know man..... I get why micro-transactions exist.... but almost every time them being in there actually seems to lower the quality of the product vs if they were not there. At least these days.

I just don't think I could play this game with how nasty they are in here.

I love this stupid game. The best thing to do is find a good clan to play games with (and to give you cards), and to just accept right off the bat that you're not going to get a ton of new cards every day. Don't give in and buy gems, just accept the timers and play games just for fun if you have to.

Not that there isn't gross stuff in here, but I wonder when we've all become obsessed with constant progression and not just playing for fun

These dumb games might seem like a scam, but it's the dark future we live in, according to the Beastcast, where kids think traditional games are for old people and they only wanna play on their phones or watch people play traditional video games.

That being said, I really think Brad is an excellent forerunner to take the plunge into the abyss of these grindy time wasters. First it was StarCraft 2, then it DOTA 2, then it was Destiny and now it's Clash Royale.

I still wish there was someone on staff who was deeper into weeb games. There's just been a ton of releases over the last few months, like Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, Senran Kagura Estival Versus, Stella Glow, Project X Zone 2, Casey Powell Lacrosse 16 (the ultimate anime) as well as upcoming games like Nights of Azure and Trillion: God of Destruction. Unlimited Anime!

It would be fun to see that stuff getting tastefully covered here on the site.

I get that is the dark future we live in, but it doesn't mean I have to let myself get duped by it.

I just think it is sad when things like this lower the quality on otherwise potentially good games. That is before speaking of the possible moral implications of pay to win style setups. Don't get me wrong, I have done micro-transactions on rare occasions, but they are just nasty now....

I honestly don't fault the people who make the game, or even those who make the decisions for them. If I were in their place of course I would snag that opportunity. However, I am more disappointed in how consumers have allowed it to get to this point.

This game would be good but the imbalance of leveled troops based on how much money you spend ruins it.

I don't necessarily buy that F2P/P2W games are our dark future.

I absolutely buy that the gaming market could eventually only be VR/PC and Mobile because of both ends of the market. The dad and the kids each having their devices. Kids, especially the ones I've seen and know under 10 (I have 2 kids under 10) have no care for consoles and PCs at least have Minecraft.

This seems like the ultimate money grabbing game.

I've got a few friends who have been playing this and all of them have said it's not a good game but they can't stop playing it. I don't see anything wrong with micro transactions in general, I've paid for the odd thing here and there, but having your unlocks gated by 8 hour long timers?! That's just ridiculous. Micro transactions can and have been done right, but this is just getting into foul territories.

I miss the days when you paid for a game up front and got access to everything. Well, It's a nice look into our dark dystopian future.

I guess the game plays alright but I'm not even gonna start a game knowing that it's only really enjoyable if you constantly spend money. No thanks.

@darkbeatdk: I was surprised Project X Zone 2 wasn't covered since Jason had a little video of him placing the cartridge into his 3DS. I know he really liked the first one too.

I played this game back in 2009 when it was called Brutal Legend.

If you level up those unused cards you also level up yourself which increases your tower hitpoints and attack. I'm not sure why you wouldn't prioritize that.

Because once you hit a certain point the gold cost is not worth the small amount of XP you get. You're better off just getting XP by donating cards to your clan and saving gold to level up cards you'll actually use. Level differences in units once you reach Arena 4 or 5 can make a HUGE difference.

I've been feeling less and less confident about a lot of the content posted lately, even some of the UPF's feel sponsored at this point. Perhaps it was always that way, maybe it was just less blatant, or maybe I'm just being unrealistic with my expectations. With that said, I've found it difficult to watch.

@blupotato: This game is actually really good.

At least with this one, you can play whenever you want instead of seeing energy costs that recharge over time--your power is gated by time and card unlocks. And if someone decides to buy a bunch of cards and rank up, they'll rise out of whatever bracket they're in very quickly. And if you get in a clan, people give you cards like crazy because you're incentivized to. And you can't even unlock certain cards until you hit a certain rank so it's not as if you can get hit by super high ranked cards in early levels.

I actually think that this is a less exploitative F2P model than most of the other ones that I've seen.

@milehigh17: How does it feel sponsored? Brad gets addicted to shit easily. Just look at his love affair with Starcraft 2, Dota 2 and Destiny. This isn't sponsored content. It's crack for Brad's addiction.

But seriously, if you think this is sponsered you haven't been paying attention to this website over its lifespan. Brad likes addictive F2P stuff. Dota 2? Kingdom Rush? Did you think those were ads too? Do you think every time they mention wrestling they're getting a check from the WWE?

Do you really think Jeff would allow companies to buy opinions for their game? The crew likes what they like. Just because it's a game you're not into doesn't mean it's an ad, duder. Don't watch QLs of shit you don't care about.

It's been pretty baffling to hear about how Brad thinks the microtransaction model for this game is akin to devil spawn when the game's model is closer to Hearthstone (and a CCG/TCG) than it is any other exploitative mobile game. The biggest difference is Clash Royale's card leveling system, which is mitigated by the fact that having better strategy/timing can bridge the gap between a couple of levels of units.

You're essentially paying to increase your card library and the level of the cards you have (again, not as big of a deal as having the right cards). I would say Clash Royale actually makes it easier for the free player to get access to these cards through daily/free chests than Hearthstone does through arena grinding and daily gold quest rewards.

After seeing this I think this game would be a lot better in the Hearthstone model, where you can't buy cards, you build a deck, and just play against other players. The levels, paying for cards, cooldowns, and currencies just feels like it makes the game rotten.

Yea this is terrible. So people know they are using doctorate level psychology to design it in the best way possible to make people spend money. This is really bad. It was bound to happen as soon as people stopped paying to buy games. This is what piracy and ftp mmo's have wrought. PLEASE people stop playing these games. The amount of crap and advantage being taken of you by simple (and not so simple) psychology. It is terrible.

can't believe this is the game that brought Dan and Brad together.

It is a well designed game imo.

I should start playing this at some point. Clash of Clans didn't grab me but this seems really fun.
