Quick Look: Demon's Souls

This day on GB brought me here. 12 years later and it's fascinating to see after how much dark souls blew this up, I remember getting an imported copy and falling in love with the weirdness of it.

I wish they just re-released this version in 4k 60 honestly.

Watching this 11 years later is fascinating! The remake on PS5 is my first Souls game. I've put 24 hours into it and am loving it. People had no idea the massive impact this game would go on to have back then. No one would have believed you if you told them a remake of this would be the premiere launch title for Sony's fifth console.

I watch this video again every few years. So incredible how fresh, exciting and new this game was. They forged their own path and created something so different from anything else that was out at the time. Legendary.

It's funny how most of the GB crew at the time held this game in such high contempt because of how obtuse and weird it was. But it has since become a hugely successful phenomenon that defined, and continues to define, an entire genre and an entire generation of games.

all these years I wonder, if only Vinny made it to the bottom of the stair way and open the gate. That would probably leave a better impression for the rest of the crews.

Playing Bloodborne brought me back to this QL. It's crazy hearing their reactions to what has become taken for granted in "Souls" games. I remember trying to play this game so many times and giving up in frustration. Loving Bloodborne though.

I love this quick look. One of the best quick looks and games of all time. Demon's Souls changed everything.

Jeff's comments are funny. I remember feeling the same when I heard about this game, that it was brutally hard. The thing is though when you learn the systems it's a lot more fair than other games. You just need to be patient.

Barely did they know this game would be one of the most important RPGs of our time.

It's still so weird hearing Jeff berate the game when it seems like all the systems might appeal to him if he gave it a greater chance (or maybe not... I dunno!). The stuff Jeff is complaining about, at least in this early video before the gameplay basically became a genre, is all entirely accounted for in the mechanics of the game. You're meant to learn attack patterns, you're meant to learn your own attack animations and compensate, you're meant to die and lose what you feel is something significant. All of that is fun and frustrating (Dark Souls being the only game in recent memory to make me nearly break a controller or maybe more out of sheer frustration and anger). The thing is, the harder a task is to complete, the more reward you feel when you've accomplished it, and even though I'm not one for games with steep difficulty, I've been absolutely drawn in to these games because of that.

Either way, I'm going to pick up a PS3 at some point to play the exclusives of that era, and number one on that list will be Demon's Souls given my current obsessive streak with the Souls series which, two games in without a break (and these are long games), hasn't seen my obsession waver.

Man, Vinny actually got a ton of his info correct in this. I think like 2 things he said were wrong, but that's really good.

At the end of the Quick Look, Dave says something that sounds like "children by then?", when referring to when Vinny will finally understand all of the mechanics in Demon's Souls. I happen to love how accurate Dave was.

Well, to be fair, nobody at the time knew what to expect. It's part of what makes going back to this QL so fascinating.

Little did Vinny know that this was only the beginning.

Four years later and there's still no escape.

I love watching old Giantbomb quick looks but this not one of my favourites despite the presence of Vinny and Jeff. Hearing Jeff say he skipped the tutorial stuff, especially in a game like Demon's Souls, makes me face palm.

Just got into Dark Souls for PC, suddenly felt the urge to revisit the quick look for both that and Demon's Souls.

Only now getting into this game- this Quick Look is such a pleasant blast from the plast. Luh you Vinbro

this QL brings back good memories. The souls franchise is truly special.

These games have the best gameplay I've ever felt in a melee-oriented combat game. The people saying this game controls badly have either not played it at all, or were mad that their God of War power fantasy wasn't allowing them to breeze through the game laying waste to every enemy in their path with simple button mashing.

I'm not saying people can't like God of War, but this isn't that game. Stop expecting all games to play like you're used to, and be mega slash fests. We get a thousand clones of every AAA title because companies are scared to do anything new. Thank God we have a company like From Software to take chances.

Weird to see how different this game is from Dark Souls. Never played this one.

I would never have fun playing Saints Row 3 with cheats on, just blowing stuff up. That kinda stuff would bore me to death.

I guess everyone is rewatching this for Dark Souls :P

I just started playing this again to decide whether I should get Dark Souls (losing my previous save to a broken console kept me away til today), and I had a lot more fun with it this time around.

Breezing through the first levels, defeating the bosses without even getting hit... this game is so damn satisfying when you begin to grasp all the systems and/or start remembering level layouts and tactics.

Hands down this was the most satisfying platinum I have ever earned. It also belongs to a very very select group of games in which I still want to play again after getting that platinum. Not every one will like it, but I think everyone should at least try it out.

I just came back to this and thought it looked like a pretty sweet game I could get into, until 21 minutes when he reloaded right back at the start of the Quick Look.

Rewatching this to get amped about Dark Souls. God, it makes me feel so awful, but excited at the same time.

Just beat the game. I'm amazed by how great this game is. It's funny looking back at this quick look. It's especially interesting because I can mentally picture every single corner of this game and tell you where EVERY enemy is. You spend a lot of time being extremely cautious, but that means every moment is memorable.

Having finally gotten a chance to play this... I think it's quite simply the most engaging and outstanding rpg ever. One of the absolute best games, period. Inch by inch you earn your way through this game, braving these nightmarish locales, and it's so satisfying.

I got the Platinum in this game. it was a piece of cake.

I really, really, really want to love this game. Everything about it just seems like a pristinely well executed 3rd person combat/ exploration game, but I'm absolutely terrible at it. I can never tell if I just really suck at killing the bosses in it or I'm somehow playing it wrong, and I adamantly refuse to look up a walk-through for it to help myself so I'm at lots here.

Controls don't feel weird to me at all, but then again I came into this from a big kick off of the Monster Hunter game from the PSP.

Someday I hope to pick it up and try some more again.

I have nothing but respect for all the people who have finished this game. I hate myself for wanting to go on now that I'm so far into it. RAGE!
