Quick Look: Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition

Already seeing some good gameplay videos out there with Vergil. I'd like to see some high level play with Lady.

@hadestimes: I think that there's a quick workaround in switching to High quality. It's probably the HD specifically that's messed up.

And I get not being bothered by it. For me it is really frustrating. The combat is the main part of that game and if that is all you need, great. Some backtracking is fine. But when as a game expects me to just play through all the content I literally just played through just to finish it, I start being less okay with it.

I downloaded the mp4 as well. It says it's 26:00 long, but the HD download was only 236 MB, which seems small to me. This video also does not go beyond the 7 min mark without ending.

Both this quick look and the Batman quick look have a lot of artifacting. Did something happen to your equipment after E3?

Totally agree with Dan. Never liked DMC4. Probably half of the environments in the game were really weak or just straight up bad. Then you get to play through the game twice with Nero and Dante. I literally can't remember anything of the story from Dante, so I assume he got the shaft compared to Nero. The boss fight with that giant statue was terrible, too.

All I want is a DMC game where you play as the original Dante for the love of god. DMC2 turned him into a complete different character. DMC 3 was a younger Dante and the main protagonist of DMC4 was Nero with a terrible attempt to pad the games length with Dante. Obviously DmC was a completely different Dante. Hell, 20 years later, I probably won't even like Dante anymore if they made a new one.

I thought DMC 4 was really fun combat wise, and it had some great boss fights, but overall it was pretty damn boring. I actually had the limited edition version in a fancy metal case, with a neat mini artbook as a pre-order bonus. I sold it though, my first 360 died while I was nearing the end of a second playthrough so maybe I was a little bitter.

I'll probably pick this up along with DmC. Been a looong time since I've beaten a DMC game. DMC1 and 3 used to be two of my favourite games.

Same. This video is the only one on the site that has ever failed for me midstream. Streaming in general seems slightly less instant than pre-E3. Did the Johnny V v Lang incident spike traffic or something?

It's a pity that the core weaknesses of this game are things that can't be changed by throwing in 3 more characters, but hey, I'm still enjoying it.

I disagree. Better characters that look nicer sure and more interesting combat certainly but its way easier to simply play dmc in terms of button inputs and combat management and reacting to enemies etc. And the level design in dmc shits all over this completely as it is amazing. Dmc4 has some of the worst level design of any game I've ever played, some of the devil bringer traversal segments alone are just insanely tedious and borderline broken they're so bad. Never mind that this is still half a game that is repeated only in the 2nd half you're simply a different guy. Likewise this special edition is nothing but the same exact terrible levels but with new playable characters and the coolest features were already available in the original PC release. Imo Capcom cheaped out super hard with this "special edition". Even DMC'3's SE had entirely new areas and boss fights.

2nd best DMC game. Hopefully this is doing well in sales or I'm pretty sure the DMC franchise is dead.

Watching this just reminds me of how utterly disappointing this game was coming off the heels of 3 and 3 SE.

DmC is such a great game and seeing this just makes me want to play that instead. Dante's multiple styles in this is the only thing I really enjoyed and I wanted on the fly style switching in 3. Aside for that though, there isn't really anything about Trish, Lady or Virgil that makes me want to play through these terrible, terrible levels again.

I know we won't get a DmC2 but man I would love to see that instead of this.

Took me a while to work out that they were saying bloody palace ... i was hearing bloody phallus which seemed too gross!

The backtracking along with the not so great puzzles was the thing that turned me off to this game when it came out on the PS3/360. The puzzles just seemed like they were set in place to slow you down and increase the overall game length.

@katpottz: I've got your back on this. It's a big dissonant problem I'm having going back and trying early game DMC3. Dante is an immortal badass in cutscenes. But has like. Two combos that you use until you switch weapons and try to chain something together.

I like DMC in theory and I really loved the Nero combat in this one but I think I really liked DmC more than any of the other games and I'm continually disappointed that SOME kind of sequel to either timeline hasn't come out yet.

Between Capcom's games being a product of their time (and up and down in their own right) and Ninja Theory's awful butt rock 'tude bullshit, I'm glad Platinum was there to do this shit like this right.
