Quick Look: Drawn to Death

This game is like someone had a really cool idea but couldn't figure out how to make that idea into a game that works and looks good so they just forced everything in hopes that at least something catches on. The game's hole edgy atitude feels like a "how do you do fellow kids?" forced jokes from a 40 year old who visited 4chan and thought he completely understood what teens these days are into.

But, in the end, not even my 12 year old self would be into this game or think it was funny. It's a shame, because having a game that looks like drawings on a notebook is actually a cool concept (even though it looks awful in this game).

Is this game social commentary on why all memes belongs in the trashcan, so what the hell is this? Please don't tell me that teenagers really think this way as this seems way over the top.

I was, most likely, the intended demographic audience for this game like 15 years or so ago and I cannot imagine that this is what kids think like. I'm on Dans boat here, this is just obnoxious garbage. This has to be a parody of some sort and I can't even think of a way to find this charming.

It seems like that in this game a lot of devs didn't agree with each others decisions so they just did seperate things and in the last month of the development phase the director put anything anyone did seperately together as one mess. It just feels so detached from any cohesiveness. The style of this game for instance doesn't seem bad and I do like it in some ways, but then you have .gif style image macros floating in completly trashing it. Nothing feels like it is meant to be together, maybe it is supposed to be this way for some reason.

This seems like Monday Night Combat if Monday Night Combat would do a high effort April Fools joke that backfires intentionally for shits and giggles.

@steevl: UnEpic isn't a bad game but I know people who don't like that game in a similar ways they don't like shows such as Big Bang Theory. It just feels obnoxious with its references and its lowest-common-denominator style of humor at least from what I can gather. I agree with you there, but at least UnEpic has something more to it compared to Drawn to Death, at least judging from the QL.

@treefingers: It's hyperbolic for him to say that yes, but ultimately it doesn't matter. Current Dan doesn't like it, and whether or not 13-year old Dan would've is irrelevant because 13-year old Dan was living in the mid/late-90s and it's 2017 now.

This is great! I was just thinking the other day that Persona 5 and Yakuza 0 are pretty good but what I really want is a game that feels like it was designed by a 13 year old shithead.

I don't buy competitive multiplayer only games ever so that's a big part of why I am uninterested in this. And I don't think it's particularly funny or interesting.

Free is definitely the correct price for this game. Kind of a bummer that it took up a slot on this months free PS Plus offerings...

I really like Vinny's comment about this being what a game would look like in a TV show that doesn't really know about games. "Oh no they're getting sucked into the game!"

I love that this game exists tho, cos there'll be a bunch of now-shitty teens who'll see this game and its "Borderlands 2 x Attitude Era" style and think it's the coolest shit, then they'll grow out of that and this will just wholly represent their eternal shame at that one point in their life.

Every generation needs its relic of Shitty-Teen-ness and this is totally that for a new era of teens

Yeah, I definitely agree with you there. Also not a fan of anything I've seen from Big Bang Theory. I'd rather play UnEpic than Drawn to Death because it's more of my type of fun.

Did the Eric Andre "Ranch It Up" character make this game?

Not since Jeff getting repeatedly screamed at in Accounting has a game's sense of humor been more abrasive (to me).

Oh man, that guy in the video who keeps complaining about the game's humour would really hate Giant Bomb's Dan Ryckert.

+ it actually plays really well imo. The downtime inbetween matches killed it for me though. The tone strangely doesnt even put me off as much as sunset overdrive did.

Imo all of david jaffes games have been dumb and edgy while trying to be all cool and serious. This game just finaly dropped all pretence.

'I dont think theres high level drawn to death play' says dan while rarely using the character specific abilities lol. Im not saying this game is extraordinarily deep or anything but theres definitely a pretty big difference between someone who played a decent amount of this and someone who didnt. In one 4 player vs match I played there was this one guy who got literally all the points, we could barely touch the guy and he wouldnt let us score either, he clearly knew how to use the abilities effectively while we didn't. On the other hand, playing against players who barely used their movement abilities often resulted in me obliterating them, even in 1vs2 scenarios.

Btw, I used to draw waaay more terrible things than this in tone and, in person/reality, have always been the most mild mannered kid immaginable, beeing nice to & trying to understand everyone around me. Ive also been told I talk like a 40 year old adult since I was like 6 years old, you wouldn't believe the childish shit I'd draw though. I have the feeling dan is making a lot of crazy assumptions about what kind of person would draw/make/like stuff like this and why :p.

I tried my best to gather up the "best" bits, with a 1,1x speed to make it even better.

How does such a game get released in 2017?

This QL was hilarious, if for no other reason, than Dan's reaction to it. I found myself literally laughing out loud several times due to his severe reaction to the announcer, in addition to him parroting what the announcer was saying.

But seriously, this game doesn't look good at all. The humour is trying way too hard and isn't funny, nor does the gameplay itself seem good enough (or even decent) to have people try and look past that. It's free as part of PS+ so technically I've "purchased" it, but to me it's not even worth the bandwidth to download and never play like many of the other PS+ offerings I have on my system.

I'm actually kinda into this game. I may have to download this.

What can I say? I'm a sucker for Ninja Sharks as it turns out.

Dan, this had me in stitches. Your bewildered rage was exactly what I felt as I attempted the tutorial. I uninstalled before even getting to a match.

This game seems to be afraid that if it doesn't remind you every other second that it's obnoxious, you'll forget.

I like this game a lot. It is Twisted Metal to a tee. Some will like it. Some won't. At least try it since it's free and there will be a niche audience who will find the depth in the character moves. There is a charm to the aesthetic that I like.

Dan was INSUFFERABLE in this quick look though. The best moment was when Vinny just casually asks, "Isn't this just wrestling?"

Dan has a lot of growing up to do.

@mrblobby64: I think today's teens would look at this in much the same way they observed Steve Buscemi asking his fellow teens how they're doing. This thing has a cross-generational image problem.

I mean got style. But I don't think the gameplay is engaging

I can't take Dan's complaints 100% seriously knowing that he just dropped several thousand dollars watching the cringefest that is 2017 WWE.

This doesn't look great and the tone and humor are very offputting.

That being said, I like David Jaffe but he seems to get into these, "Critics just hate me" or "Critics don't get it!" modes, and other game developers egg him on. Following him on Twitter I've seen so many people give in to his attitude that everyone who doesn't like his game is out to get him or something and that's weird.

I don't think I've heard anyone being called a wankstain since I was at primary school in the 80s...

I think Vinny nailed it when comparing the game to a Psychonauts level. As a level or a map in a larger game, I could see the merit (a bit) but this is stretched waaaaaay too thinly.
