Quick Look: Fire Emblem Warriors

And Ben seems to have missed that Marth in FE: Awakening (Chrom's child) is actually Lucina, not Marth from the NES game.

Yeah uh audio on this is pretty whack, can barely hear Brad or Ben when the battle heats up. Still, game looks surprisingly cool for "just another warriors".

Thanks for checking out this game. While the game audio is very high, I was able to make out most of what Ben and Brad was saying. I know you tried your best.

Hearing Ben try to explain the Fire Emblem universe was pretty great (Awakening got weird!)

This seems like an especially fun stress relief: it's flashy, doesn't seem to require too much focus (if you play on lower difficulty levels) while also hitting my Fire Emblem nostalgia (although I wish the support stuff was more fleshed out)

I am looking forward to it.

I feel like I get to be in the special club that sees a quick look of this game with Ben & Brad and with Ben & Jeff. Not sure exactly why you re-did the video, but if it was for the audio, I really appreciate you going to the effort of re-doing it: it shows a lot of dedication to quality. <3

Edit: I almost feel like Ben said Lucina was Chrom's mom specifically to mess with me, but I will not be tricked into responding to that... Close enough. I'm glad Ben got some enjoyment out of this given he seems tangential to the target audience.

I don't think Ben got hit in this entire quicklook. I'm a Fire Emblem fan but I'm not paying for garbage just because there are some Fire Emblem characters in it. They didn't get me with their shitty phone gambling game or their wii-u exclusive Persona knock off and they're not fooling anyone with this shit either. I'll wait for a real Fire Emblem thanks. Hopefully a fully featured one with supports and a weapon triangle unlike their last sad attempt.

Why are the enemies just standing there looking at you for like 10 seconds without even moving or trying to attack? I understand that they are meant to be fodder but can the game at least pretend because it looks so incredibly goofy.

I've heard from alleged hardcore Warriors players that this is the best playing Warriors game ever because of the multiple characters and the orders you can give them. I did have a lot of fun with it and I want to go back after the onslaught of games is over.

Since Ben sounded so totally not into it with his explanations, here is a quick reason why you might find this game fun.

The joy comes from finding ways to beat levels as fast as possible using characters, weapons, and orders to make it happen. Add in FE fan service, loot, and level grinds and there are your hooks. Yes the fodder dudes don't really attack you, they are there to charge your meter. The generals are the things that will kill you, and there can be dozens of them on a map.

Also note since Ben seemed to imply differently. Leveling up matters, difficulty matters (similar to levels), weapon triangle matters. These things play a muted role in the normal difficulty story (ESPECIALLY early to mid in) but if you like the game then you will be dealing with these things a lot.

@boonsong: When playing on normal these games are press x to win, that's how these games have always been. When you bump it up to hard you can get like 4 shot by everything. It's such a weird balance.

@rocketraccooncmro: That's a shame you didn't give Tokyo Mirage Sessions a chance, but if you don't like Persona then I understand. TMS was my GotY in 2016.

@fonzinator: I'm having way more fun with this than I did with Hyrule Warriors. Glad to know the hardcore Warriors fans say this is a quality release. The only hardcore Warriors person I know in games media is Jim Sterling, and he's been too busy ranting about loot boxes to make a FE Warriors video.

Any time they reference Cash 4 Gold, I just love either Vinny or Ryan's impression of the guy in those ads.

Also, between Fire Emblem-flavored Dynasty Warriors, Gundam-flavored Dynasty Warriors, BERSERK-flavored Dynasty Warriors and Legend of Zelda-flavored Dynasty Warriors, I feel like someone's been pushing premium-priced mods on us for a looooong time now. :b

Will there be a 3rd QL for this game if the odd editing at the beginning is pointed out?

Well, I think only Dynasty Warriors 9 will finally provide some innovations to the formula (such as proper vertical movement options, like climbing up walls and such) that aren't in any of these spin-offs, which is definitely needed by this point in time after they've fully exploited the basic formula, but obviously even that title will still be a Warriors game at heart.

I do have to say that these games often have multiple difficulty levels, even beyond Hard, and somewhere in my PS3 is a savegame of me playing either Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate or DW7 on Chaos difficulty and not being able to easily progress past a certain stage because my current health was too low. So there is a degree of challenge when enemies can attack you and bring down your health (especially if you get too cocky after attacking other foes at the same time), but that's usually not a factor on Normal difficulty unless you're in the endgame.

Life is cheap in this game.

There are now two quick looks for this game up on youtube. It's fun they didn't pull the other down. Maybe this could be a new weekly feature.

Am I the only one who immediately pairs up my guys and leaves it that way for the whole battle?

While I only came in with the Fire Emblem series with Awakening and think I'm more of a Fire Emblem: Awakening fan than a Fire Emblem fan, it is a bummer how this Warriors game is focused so much on Awakening and Fates. Most of the characters that are outside of those two games I hear are just extra characters for the game's History mode, the mode akin to Hyrule Warrior's Adventure maps.

I've never followed the Fire Emblem fandom too closely. What inklings have come across my way have pointed that it can often be the worst of Nintendo's sub-fandoms. I can see how that can be true given how difficult it was to get in to these games before and now it has suddenly gained popularity, new fans, and renewed publisher backing. Easy to see various hot schisms forming around the series, its past, and its future. At the moment, the people who liked Fates seemed to have kept to themselves, as I've seen mostly disappointment towards Fates. Shadows of Valentia looked to me to have it's equal share of happy and sad fans, which seems fitting for a remake of the black sheep of the series. Personally, I adored Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE and have easily played more of Fire Emblem Heroes than Fates (and probably Awakening at this point). With Heroes, I can get chained to mobage garbage easily and find fun in the character slot machine of gacha. Also, I think the simplified strategy of Heroes may be my comfort level of tactics RPG.

Anyway, the appeal of Warriors games is being a lawnmower for grunts and managing time on the battlefield. If there is ever a gap in my backlog, I'll look forward to picking this up. That gap doesn't seem likely. As for other Fire Emblem fans, I do hope that Fire Emblem Switch will be the game they have wanted for a long time. As much as I was fine with the silly-anime fun times of Awakening and Tokyo Mirage Sessions, it would be nice to see something a bit more serious for the next go-around.

I generally like the Warrior games, they're a great stress reliever. Hyrule Warriors was way better than it had any right to be really, so I might have to check this out at some point.

I send all of them out to bases and such where they have a advantage on the weapon triangle, first. I only pair them up when they're low on health.

Wow the first 30 seconds of dead air unsure if the video broke wasn't bad enough I couldn't hear ben for about half of this. Also they both seemed bored and obviously didn't care about anything. I expect better out of you guys.

Everyone forgets Dragon Quest Warriors which was really good.

Has there ever been a Warriors Quick Look without a reference to the Yellow Turban Rebellion (a real thing that actually happened I'm sure Jeff doesn't know about)?

Performance is better framerate but lower quality.

I am so annoyed that those maps are lifted straight out of Hyrule Warriors. I wonder if they've been in other games too.

You're well within your rights to not play any of these games (and I totally don't have any real interest in this Warriors game either), but IMO you're missing out on both of those. Tokyo Mirage Sessions was my Game of the Year for 2016, it's phenomenal. Heroes is... a pretty watered down Fire Emblem thing, all told, but it's also by far the best mobile game I've played in terms of filling 5 minutes or half an hour while waiting for something, or as something to do while watching TV. I've played it every day since it came out and it's cost me absolutely nothing.

@ravelle: I thought I was crazy, too! Yeah that one’s audio was pretty off. I feel so bad for Ben having to take on all the production out of nowhere. He gave his all! Very admirable.

What shall we do?

I enjoyed Hyrule Warriors but that may have been due to fan service. This looks like that but without the Z targeting and equipment? Swapping to people in different areas seems cool at least.

I like this game.

I've only played 1, the second game really quickly after the first. I've heard it was better though.

Uhh. I know. I'm saying it looked a lot worse while they both didn't seem to think it makes a big difference.

Jeff said its acceptably worse and since Jeff has always preferred framerate over quality, its expected for him to say that. Although its possible compression may also make it more noticeable?

Jeff is incorrect. You don't need to become good at this game or any other Warriors game in order to win, because there is no such thing as being good at these games.

I went back and watched the other QL before this one because I thought maybe they were doing a bit... and I didn't notice anything janky.
