Quick Look: Grand Theft Auto V (PC)

As lovely as this looks at 60fps (on a decent rig)....I can't justify buying it for a 3rd time (at least at full price). I have completed the story 3x (twice of those being 100% completions), so the only selling point for me with the PC port is being able to play GTA:O for free and not having to sub to PS+/Xblive for the privilage

I can't believe I'm able to run this *relatively* well on my Radeon HD 7770. It doesn't look that great, and there's quite a bit of object lag when driving, but it's amazing I'm able to run it all.

Can't wait until my GTX 960 arrives, and then I'll be playing in all of it's 60 fps glory!

@kubqo: If its anything like most modern PC games, they only use one core....

Seeing several threads in German and Russian about the game not working on Athlon X3's. But then, Rockstar have admitted that the game is currently totally busted - in some cases it won't even install - if you're running many non-English versions of Windows where your user or administrator account contains letters that aren't your basic A-Z's (and in Windows 8, that's out of your hands since it uses the name of the connected live account), so it could be that they're running into that issue but mistaking it for a CPU issue.

I have an Athlon X3 too, but I haven't picked the game up yet because of how terrible my experience with their GTA IV port was.

Sadly, how many cores the game actually uses doesn't have a lot to do with it, Ubisoft for example hard-coded Far Cry 4 not to launch on computers with less than four cores, even though it's not really much more demanding than Far Cry 3 was.

I really want to buy this even though I own the PS3 version and barely played it.

And here I was thinking "eh, GTA IV PC ran like crap when it came out, I'll grab GTA V on PS4 and play it there."

Ah well. Cool to see it running so well. I'll grab it sometime when it's cheap.

It was originally only in GTA Online, they later patched it in to the single player.

Man, I loved editing videos in GTA IV and I'm glad those tools are back! Now I just need to have enough money for this and potential required computer parts :/

@zerocrescent: yes indeed. I have a 6950 2 GB Vram card and i had to turn population variety 2 notches down to get water quality and texture quality to high. Well worth it.

It cannot be overstated how awesome it is that you can use a controller and mouse in tandem.

Waited long enough to play this, I figure I can wait a little longer for the price to come down.

How many 980's are they using Brad ? because I and everyone else who max out the game only get a constant 60fps/1080p on a single 980 card only if we don't use any MSAA (even then it can dip sub60)

Personally I've had to dial down some of the game settings to get 4X MSAA on my 980 card and keep 60fps.

To me, the first person mode really works, and even more so with the latest updates to the game. I played it on 360 originally as my brother let me borrow it, but bought and played through it on PS4, and being in first person, for me it made the third person disappointment negligible. I say disappointment, because I feel that playing in third person, while still completely fine, took a back step compared to Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3, but getting to go first person, and again, especially with the latest update, the game feels like a proper open world fps, similar to Far Cry honestly (but better, since I find GTA 5 to be a better open world game than Far Cry). I played through it all the way in first person, both driving and on foot, and it all feels great to me. The in car shooting isn't perfect, but it's more immersive, and perhaps more intense; it also works well enough to get the job done I felt.

They really need to show the Director mode in some way like in a UPF or something. It's basically a built-in trainer, you can chose to play as any character or pedestrian, teleport to anywhere in the map, set your wanted level to whatever and put on a whole bunch of different cheats.

Yeah great but at the end of the day its just the same game but 2 years late. I mean what did they really add that would make you say it was worth the wait? R* couldnt be arsed to get a couple of interns down to the PC hardware store and grab a bunch of parts to test the game on and we're all acting like omg amazeballs based R* for making a PC port after 2 whole years later. Seems abit odd to me.

I have really been enjoying playing this game again in 4k. I am also happy you guys made a quick look after the delays on monday stopped this from being live streamed.

Yup, those areas ironically ended up being the most demanding framerate wise when I bumped up the textures, shadows, and tessellation to the max. They look incredible and even bogged down my GTX 980 to the mid 40's

@yarbles: yeah same here, using only 2x msaa (with MFAA enable on control panel), plus ticked grass quality down to very high, was getting rubbish performance in heavily grassy areas with it on ultra

Hahah "that MSAA thing," it's always surprising to me when you guys aren't familiar with standard video game graphics options for PC games. If you aren't familiar with that stuff it could be super easy to crank things like that all the way up and then complain about poor performance.

Multisample Anti-Aliasing is probably the single easiest way to destroy your performance out of anything on there haha.

Especially if you waiting for the PC version of the game specifically to get the best looking version of the game! Tweaking PC games can be a lot of fun trying to find that perfect sweet spot but I totally understand if that doesn't interest you.

Do you guys realize how ridiculous "Everyone is so LA" sounds? What does that even mean? There are so many different cultures in LA its impossible to describe everything as any one thing.

People who hate Jimmy beyond a rational amount puzzle me. Some people think he is a cliche whose presence is never justified in the story. I've seen people transition from a diatribe about Jimmy to a weirdly personal focus of hate on the actor, Danny Tamborelli (who NAILED the role). For me, he's among my favorite "love to hate him" characters.

First of all, he's an archetype, not a cliche. Every goddamn character in GTA is an archetype. It's really about meta-level integration of "shitty" characters rather than just having a gut feeling from scene to scene. Obviously you start out immediately hating him, because that's how he's designed. Right off the bat, he says some reprehensible stuff... because that's how he's written. If you're a parent playing the game, it probably verges on torture not only because he is the anathema to the ideal child, but Michael is also woefully under-equipped to handle him properly. If you're not a parent you're like "who the fuck are you, get out of my house weirdo." Maybe those aren't mutually-exclusive now that I think about it...

My point is, everyone "hates" the character, because the creators did a good job. The entire family makes you wince, but that doesn't mean there's no sympathy. For Michael's entire character to make sense, his family has to be the way it is. I was fascinated by his internal struggle over the course of the entire game to get "his" problems in check when it's obviously more than that. We hate his family. Hell, he hates his family. But there's also a prevailing sense that this was a family he once loved, but stuff went wrong... Even if he still wants to love them now, they don't let him and he doesn't let himself. It's part of what makes Michael very interesting and human as a protagonist.

@dezvous: Post processing FXAA just looks hideous (look at the cables on the bridge in the video) that's why MSAA is the preferred anti-aliasing but I do agree you get diminishing returns on quality vs performance after x4 mark.

@yarbles: I'm well aware, what about what I said would make it seem like I didn't? I was talking about Dan's comment on lowering MSAA and mysteriously getting better performance. We need like a PC gaming basics boot camp so that people understand what they're messing with.

I would be fine with 30 fps if the PC version meant the game didn't take twenty damned years to load every time you boot it up.

The character models are kinda mediocre. Which is a shame since the environment art is pretty impressive.

I'm having a blast with the PC version. Usually runs at a solid 60fps with everything on very high with my 970 and FX-8350. I still play the PS4 version online with friends and it's hard to go back. The in-game video editor is amazing as well. Driving and flying with a controller, then running around with free-aim on with a mouse is great. I didn't like aim assist on console, but free aim sucks with a controller.

Also, I can't stand Trevor. He's like too crazy and inconsistent with his motivations (more so than the others). He has some great moments, but I dislike playing as him or really any interaction with him. I get what they were going for, and he's well-acted. I just think he's unrealistically extreme. Not that the game is realistic, but his character comes across as corny to me. All of the other characters are fine, and Trevor would be in small doses. I even like the intentionally annoying characters (Jimmy, Floyd's girlfriend, etc.). Trevor's schtick wore thin an hour after he's introduced, in my opinion.

Not saying I wish I waited for the PC version, but it looks absolutely incredible. This 100% is the definitive edition. I mean even though Dan says in the quick look this is all on medium, it looks better than PS4 release. This maybe worth picking up on a steam sale in the future though.

I just started watching the Sopranos a few days ago. I didn't realize until now how Michael and his family are lifted directly from the Sopranos. Like, 100%.
