Quick Look: Just Cause 3

Cool, I was waiting to see Vinny finally get his hands on this game. Here's hoping he loves it like he loved Sleeping Dogs.

I'm going to be very disappointed in the GB crew if during GOTY deliberations they act like this game is flawless while they rail Fallout 4 for being a buggy mess...

Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of both series (this and Fallout will be 2 of my 4 game purchases of the year) I just feel like they have a huge hard on for this game and are going to ignore its bugginess, while that's almost their only criticism of Fallout.

"Open World Vinny" is a feature I wish my games came with.

nasher27: I don't think that is going to be their only criticism of the game though. I think it's story also has its share of problems (particularly the ending).

Whooo Vinny!! This carnage was beautiful and goofy-hilarious in every way. Would be nice if Alex wasn't quite so much of a buzz-kill, but man this game looks super fun. Great video!!

Both Alex and Austin have lost their cool midway through the quicklook but the unlike me the poor, poor guys the can't press "Esc".

Vinny makes me sweat for many reasons.

@gaspower: That's true (I also think the inventory system is borderline terrible), but if their (and by their I mean Jeff's) main complaints are the open-world bugginess and the story, and then he's going to get super hyped and act like just cause is going to be amazing? I don't know, seems hypocritical.

Now I sound like one of the people complaining about how video games are reviewed on the bombcast, ugh.

Looks great on PC. Hearing some questionable stuff about the game on PS4/Xbone, though--bad load times and frame rates.

@nasher27: To be fair, it seems that you're jumping the gun because as far as I can remember the two guys that have always been hyped for Just Cause was Brad and Ryan. Jeff can appreciate the game but I don't think he's going to be as excited compared to Brad. You're already calling him a hypocrite way before any kind of deliberation has been said. Just cool down a bit.

I can sort of understand where your frustration comes from though especially when your feelings on a game you can somewhat anticipate it being contradictory to that of some guys on the crew.

@gaspower: You make a very good point, I am linking the guys' thoughts of a game pre-release to what I predict their review score will be, which is entirely speculative.

However, I think most of the time we can predict (if the game has been shown to the press sufficiently, to which I think JC3 qualifies) what a game will get with some amount of accuracy. I can say with a fair amount of confidence that JC3 will be a 4- or 5-star game, depending on the reviewer. Jeff seems less likely to give 5-star review, and Brad seems to be the opposite case (anecdotally, I have not actually looked at the numbers).

Having written that, it seems likely to me now that this will garner the same score as Fallout 4 (PC) so I don't know why I'm so bothered by this. I guess I am expecting too much objectivity from their review process, despite how they have given multiple times recently the fallacies of such an objective system.

I loved this. I'm sitting in a hospital bed so it gave me great joy to see this game played for a long period of time. I have a 980 ti and am excited to play especially after seeing robbaz play this game on YouTube/ he only has a 9 minute video but his antics put everything Vinny does to shame (and I love vinnys antics!) ... There is a part where he blows up a bridge hangs off the edge and the ai goes nuts as like 20 cars keep flying off the edge as well as hooking cows to a wind mill with the tether. Something about the one area seems nice but does the weather ever change? Between witcher 3 tomb raider and this game graphics are getting to the point of where it doesn't even matter what takes place in the game simply walking around is better than my real life will ever be. I won't be out of the hospital for a week or two and my computer is unknown origin since I moved states so I bought a Xbox one bundle to play tomb raider since I wanted a fun game to play and that game is goty for me besides witcher 3

@mike@jacksukeru@devil240z@amyggen: For what it's worth, the folks over on the Playstation Trophy site have been playing it and haven't mentioned many problems with how it runs after the day one patch. I'd normally be leery of what they might say, being crazy for trophies and all, but they would know considering how many hours they toss in there over those sweet platinums!

Based on this, the PS4 version at least doesn't seem like it runs all that well, definitely not at 30 FPS. I have no reason to discount what @pompouspizza says just because he isn't a professional writer or critic. He stated, "I will say that I'm not the most sensitive to bad framerates but to me it feels like a pretty solid 30. I have blown up a lot of stuff at once and I have not noticed any drops. Edit - I take it back. The framerate is fine but there has been some noticeable drops and hitching so far. The load times are not great either." I'm more interested in the PC version though, but my machine exceeds the recommended requirements by about 250% so I'm not too worried. At least about performance, anyway.

User @simmster also has the PS4 version, and said, "I also have the Day One Patch installed...The fps is all over the place, it's definitely sub-20 at times when it all kicks off. Hard to control vehicles when it drops so badly during lots of explosions. ...the frame rate is really really bad at times."

My problem with this game is that I will never have as much fun playing it as I will watching Vinny play it.

This looks like somewhat of an improvement from 2, but 2 just felt like a game completely devoid of personality, a whole world full of nothing. I'm curious whether they adressed that well enough or not.

Man.. this quick look started our really fun. But Alex's constant and forceful criticism of Vinny's play style really tanked the mood of the quick look.

Though, to be honest, I might just be in defense mode because I have JC3 pre-installed on my ps4 already. Figured it was a sure thing because I never had trouble with JC2 on previous gen consoles. Oh well. Just gonna have to wait till midnight to find out! Thanks for the heads up though all the same.

@Vinny makes everything magic. Game looks fun, though nothing to get too excited over. I hope to get some time with it at some point this week -- schedule permitting.

Great video....really bums me out watching it now, knowing that the ps4 version sounds sub par and not worth the money. I mean the game itself looks like it would be fun enough for enough hours even if the story was boring to justify the purchase price, but if it's not going to run well during explosions(ie 95% of the time) then it kind of ruins it.

Hopefully a patch can improve the frame rate to something steady and stabilize the load times and I'll be back on board in a few months

I've said it before but I'll say it again. The explosions look pretty but lifeless and muted without shockwaves.
