Admittedly, I didn't see it either....

Played the Japanese version, but I doubt I'll buy the English until the price goes down.
One thing I must say is that the music in the game is great, I'd say it almost tops the Gold/Silver score.

This.

It'd be easy to implement too. At the start of a battle when "a X appears" or "X wants to fight" is displayed, choose a  pokemon from a list on the bottom screen.

Seriously.

I beat every Pokemon game without using buffs/debuffs. I doubt it's necessary unless you're doing some challenge run or playing competitively.

I do like how they've added visual effects that make it very easy to tell when someone is buffing/debuffing though.

I love Vinny's little soundeffects whenever he plays or watches a game.

I've never actually played Pokemon. Franchise started out in my country when I was 15 and looking to "get away from all those kiddy games!".

Now I'm old enough to not actually care, but getting into Pokemon now seems like such a hassle!

@RockmanBionics:   All you have to do is put the pokemon you want to fight at the front of your party.  I mean you have to be in a trainers line of sight or actually walk into grass to find a pokemon.  So you always know when you're going to get into a fight.  If the game moved at a faster pace then maybe that would be a good idea, but to be honest that would just annoy me more than anything.

Except for those times when you're just walking down the road and out of nowhere you rival appears and challenges you to a battle, all the while you're thinking "Fuuuuck, I didn't refill my [pokemon]'s HP yet!".

And then there's the fact that I don't want to have to go into the menu every other minute to change the order of my pokemon. You could argue that it's part of the game, that you have to stay prepared in case something unexpected happens and I suppose that's fair. It still feels arbitrary though.

If you think otherwise that's fine, you are obviously having your way. I can't relate to your thinking though. I mean, provided you don't use the stylus to select your pokemon, you would have to manually select it from a list using the d-pad. If anything that would slow down the game further and you would still have to put your pokemon in the default cursor slot for maximum, button pressing, efficiency.

I really loved the unique ways in which Pokémon fainted in Pokémon Stadium. Wish they could incorporate that into the handheld titles. Perhaps with a future 3DS title...

Pokemon's battle system is just so tedious all these years after the original. I can't believe they haven't tried to improve on it. I mean, it's still selling well so I guess it's justified, but I seriously can't play it that way. It's too slow. Surely they can come up with something?

Same, I had recently finished the game despite knowing a bunch of stuff from the Japan release late last year, and was....actually unsurprised at some of the stuff that was done/said.

@Mikazukinoyaiba:
You took the words straight out of the mouth. People take too much stock in face value or a passing glance to actually see that this game is new in a lot of ways.

Right, because a short hand in order to avoid taking up unavailable text space shows that there was no effort put into the game.

They have more space now, the DS has a MUCH higher screen resolution than the original Gameboy. They don't have to restrict it to 4 spaces, they do so because "CHANGE IS BAD tm".

They do however still have to translate the game from Japanese. ポケモン is still half the number of characters of "Pokemon."

I think the changes are more "under the hood" than out in your face. ie. they are not readily apparent, but once you play it, it feels so different yet similar at the same time to result in something awesome.

The best part about this quick look? Not a single bellsprout to be seen.

The worst part? Not knowing how to check the move information.

No, it isn't.
Play Red/Blue and then play Black/White, the changes are obvious:
- Two new types from R/B/Y
- Abilities
- Physical/Special move split
- Sp. Defense now a stat
- Evolution methods
- Individual Values
- Effort Values
- Genders
- Forms
- New Items
- TMs are now permanent, like HMs of old
- Move Deleter, Move Tutors
- New Moves with varying effects
- New Species (this is OBVIOUS)

Then again, trolls like you never care for the details. You just see something that is somewhat familiar, yell "SAME!" and walk away with a smug look of satisfaction.

Guess what, Twilight Princess and the original Legend of Zelda are the 'same' too by your logic.

The fact that you actually had to make a case for why the fifth iteration of a series is not exactly the same as the original just proves that they are too similar. It's not that they're LITERALLY the same, it's that there isn't 13 years of iteration between them. Black and White are essentially where the series could have been by the GBA days, save of course for the slight use of 3D.

And to entertain your shockingly accurate Zelda quip, no TP and Zelda 1 are not the same, but TP does essentially have the same problem as pokemon in relation to Ocarina of Time - nearly a decade between them, but not much to show for it.

Wow
I went ahead and made a substantive list of differences and you take it as proof that the series is still similar?

Good reasoning skills sir, bravo. I'll be sure to tell that to the officer the next time I'm stopped for a DUI because fact that so many people witnessed me hit that wall is proof that I was so sober.

also in a format where the only communication is typed language, I can't help but take people LITERALLY when they say "this series hasn't changed at all"

also the GBA didn't have wi-fi and that couldn't have been done all those years back

who are you to say Pokemon hasn't progressed or what they could have accomplished years ago?

Casual players like you ALWAYS ignore the details, maybe you should take a history lesson and look at the development of the metagame over the generations then tell me none of those changes matter and it is still all the same.

Yep. You got me. I've been mated. Not only did I present a completely incoherent and counter-intuitive argument, but as a casual player who has only experienced hundreds, if not thousands of video games over the course of two decades, I am in absolutely no position to speak to the evolution of a game series.
I doff my cap to you sir, for I have been defeated.

It doesn't matter if you've played even a million games.

You're a casual player in context of the subject of Pokemon and the evolution of the series and metagame. As an outsider, you're ignorant to how significant these changes have been to the series or even the competitive scene.

Having a podcast doesn't change that fact either, anyone can have a podcast these days.
