Quick Look: SteamWorld Heist

You know, I'm pretty sure they made a 2D XCOM a couple of decades ago...

Not sure how to feel about this one

Finished this game over the weekend, it's great. Pulling off MLG-certified trickshots does not get old, and the hat collection system is clever.

The cutesy steampunk presentation is not really my thing but it doesn't get in the way either, and it is funny when one of your whimsical robots puts a revolver against the back of an enemy's roboskull and pulls the trigger.

EDIT: Brad asked if every objective is 'kill all the enemies', but that is actually pretty rare. In most of the missions, you steal or destroy something, set of the alarm, and have to evecuate while enemy reinforcements keep dropping in. On higher difficulties (I recommend starting at normal but increasing it if you feel the challenge is waning) that leads to some pretty tense everyone-bolt-for-the-exit-before-you-get-swarmed-while-your-sniper-gives-cover-fire type situations.

Spoiler: This game is incredible.

Absolutely nails the tactics gameplay translated to a sidescroller. Nail biting encounters aplenty. Don't sleep on this.

I really like this game. Xcom, yes, but also a bit of Worms and Peggle.

This looks really cool.

But I'm gonna wait for the PC version because the circle pad on my 3DS is like rotting or something.

I love this game! And the sound track you get in the spacepubs you visit is amazing!

Looking forward to getting this when it comes out on iOS.

FWIW this is primarily controlled with the dpad. You only use the circle pad to look around a bit.

Wait, how does Dan pronounce "lousy"?

I already have the game so it's not a request for me, but I wish Dan had played it a little slower and gotten the epic swag to show that off.

I think I was in the minority on SW Dig. I thought it was just all right.

I beat SW dig. Really fun game once you get all the upgrades

This looks cool, looking forward to playing it. I just played through Steamworld Dig for the first time a couple of weeks ago and loved it, and XCOM: EU/EW is one of my favourite games so I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be into this.

Any word on a PC release date yet? The official website just says "Coming 2016".

This looks rad, I'll pick up the PC version eventually.

For a minute there you got my hopes up that there might be another hidden gem in the Steamworld universe that I didn't know about...

...and then I find out it's a tower defense game and The Sadness consumes me.

This series is making quite a name for itself. Good stuff.

Glad this is coming to PC. Not sure if I want to dust off my 3DSto check it out or not. Might just end up playing Monster Hunter if I do...

Finished it last week and like others have said, it's pretty great. I can see waiting for the PC release though, I would imagine in that version you'd have more of the ship on screen. It can be a slight hassle to have to move the camera around to set up trickshots. But man oh man, a ricochet shot off the ceiling through 4 bots is dang rewarding.

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.World Heist

I've made it to the second area and am enjoying the game greatly. Comparing every game with a hint of turn based tactics (as Patrick especially used to do) to XCom is still annoying, but in this case it is actually pretty accurate. Just with out random dice rolls that cause you to miss all your hits, since every miss is all on you.

This game looks amazing! Definitely a sleeper hit!

Interested to see this, as I heard it diverges so much. Beat Dig in a sitting since it was hard to put down, so hopefully they nail this genre, too.

@beachthunder: Well, that series, like many series with long history, started with 2D after all.

Never thought I'd see the day that SPG gets heard in a QL. Haven't watched as of writing this, but I assume Dan hates everything about them (assuming he acknowledges their presence). Just seems like a band that goes against every music ideal he has.

I really hope Steam Powered Giraffe isn't too prominent in this thing; it'd be a good way to sour me on a game that otherwise looks really fun.

Brad seemed a bit too excited about taking hats from people lol.

This looks way better than I was expecting. Now I just need to decide where I would rather play it.

I'm amazed so many of you have heard of Steam Powered Giraffe, because I sure hadn't before this game, and they seem like such a bizarre, obscure, old-timey band.

I call XCOM "3D Fire Emblem".
