@d4rksh33p: He has gone a bit too far in the past on certain subjects, but people getting worked up about such a minor jab is really pushing it. Imagine if Dan Ryckert would throw a tantrum every time someone would say anything negative about his hobbies like pro-wrestling.

People's personal hobbies are perfectly fine and someone else making jokes about them or even straight up not liking them really shouldn't be able to get any real fan so worked up about it.

And this is coming from the person who called Dan out on his tweets about the football world cup.

I'm not "throwing a tantrum" I understand it might appear that way. My feelings are that of when a group of people around me decide to tell a racist, gay or sexist joke - depressed and uncomfortable on the matter.

Obviously it's just me but i just don't understand the value in this "shtick".

As someone that found it very difficult growing up with a passion for video games in a society that still brands it for kids and dorks, every time it just erodes my desire to be here a little more.

I guess it seems small, but all together it adds up.

Obviously i'm missing something that everyone else is getting a good laugh out of here, so I guess there is value in it that I don't see. So i think i'll just remove myself from the equation here and leave everybody to do their thing.

I understand the above sounds really dramatic, I want it known that I don't mean it dramatically at all and i'm not like crying in a corner or anything about it, it's just doesn't sit right with me.

Edit - I just want to foot note that I have nothing against Dan, think he is a great addition to the site and really enjoy his positive personality and much of what he gives to the site.

Hey, I like some anime stuff too. But the anime fans who are super defensive about their hobby are amusing to poke fun at, in the same way CoD dude-bros are. It's not malicious, it's light-hearted humor perhaps you just need to lighten up a bit?

The joke is actually that this isn't anime.

@d4rksh33p: @rowr:

That post certainly didn't read like voicing someone's discomfort.

And there is a clear difference between Dan at his worst and these inoffensive jabs.

http://www.giantbomb.com/forums/off-topic-31/world-cup-brasil-2014-1486393/?messageId=7406193&page=32

Make sure to read both my post and his reply to it.

The more I read/see/hear of Dan Ryckert the more I like and respect him. I think he's far different from what people's initial negative impressions might be. Especially when it comes to close-mindedness or being reactionary or dismissive.

(For the record I am not even a fan of football and I think not caring about such things as long as you're not a fan of something yourself because it doesn't affect you personally is kind of nasty and anti-social.)

Hey, you're entitled to feel what you feel, I just tend to take a more light-hearted look at this sort of thing. I get the same sort of jokes aimed towards me for being a paper and pencil rpg'er, I guess it just doesn't bother me the same way. I understand the passion behind it tho.

@noizy: I would have loved this to happen in the intro: after Jason tells Dan "this is anime", hard cut. Then the QL is Jeff and Jason, because Dan didn't want anything to do with anime and walked off.

@robbparris: It's less about the actual subject and more about the familiar attitude of dismissivesness and "im way to cool for this thing for dorks."

Like I said, I know this sounds dramatic and I don't really intend it at that, there's just a certain point where I feel i need to say something.

@hassun : well that's cool that Dan replied. I just wanted to point out that your comments "didn't read like voicing someone's discomfort." either, though it was :)

I've been known to troll myself, ironically especially in regards to anime (which I didn't think avatar is?) - anyway, i'm not making issue with someone trolling for some laughs. I just didn't see the laughs I guess.

Seeing that I live with a conservative christian family trust me I understand how you feel, but comparing a small jab at cartoons being for children to racist, homophobic or sexist jokes goes beyond dramatic really.

I say this being a big manga/anime fan too.

Are some people really trying to make a controversy out of anything said in this QL? Oh well... If saying that cartoons are for children in a jokey manner is all it takes, I don't really know what to say.

Also, I was super disappointed in Korra the show after watching The Last Airbender. Just didn't grab me.

Jason, I... I'm so sorry. Hey, remember when Brad wiped his I Am Alive progression? That was pretty funny.

As someone who has never seen Korra but really liked Airbender, I'm really annoyed at the fact that Korra has a soundtrack for sale but the original (and the best) doesn't.

Eh, if I really cared about that sort of thing, I wouldn't use a real picture in my profile. I'm pretty thick skinned when it comes to that sort of stuff. And you're right, I do dress a bit like a hipster ^_^

I guess we have different views of what this is, I view making jokes about a genre of entertainment different to personal comments. Now, if Dan was to say "Wow Rowr, you sure are dumb for liking anime" that would be totally different. Perhaps it's just semantics, I dunno.

@rowr: I just want to say that I know exactly where you're coming from. I appreciate Dan's humor at times, and as someone who loves Metal Gear Solid enough to get a tattoo related to it this past year, I like that there's someone on staff who seems to like it as much as I do.

However, his humor with the portrayal of gamers, or people who enjoy fantasy and such is just kinda annoying. It doesn't sound far removed from bullying in a way, even if it's meant as a joke. I still suffer from how bad I was bullied as a kid, and the idea of making fun of someone because of what they like, or teasing other people never really appeals to me, because I know how cruel it can feel to have it done to you. The world is a better place when people accept diversity, and respect each other's likes and dislikes. Why you call people who like a certain type of thing a "dork" or "nerd", it sounds like name calling, and teasing. It's not funny to me, because it's not far removed from bullying like I mentioned.

Dan has delivered much better content when he's sharing the things he loves and enjoys...It was refreshing to see someone like him who can understand the value in a stupid game like Mario Party when you get 4 people together. That makes for more entertaining content too. The comments we've discussed just opens the door to potentially turning people away.

Yeah, that's fine, I think I understand the sentiment you feel.

I can understand how it can get under people's skin, but I feel that it would be worst if he wasn't so self-deprecating too. He would make fun of lord of the rings is nerdy and then admit to videogames and wrestling being super nerdy as well.

You know, even with Jason saying how much he hated the game and how negative some of the reviews have been, I still think I'm going to buy this. I'm a big Avatar fan, it looks really slick, and it's only $15.

I also get the impression that like in most of Platinum's games, there are some mechanics that are pretty critical to getting the most enjoyment out of the game that are completely glossed over or really poorly explained. Like how you can get through MGSR just by mashing X, but for it to really be a lot of fun, you need to recognize all the opportunities for using the blade mode, which the game does a terrible job of explaining.

Dan is very light-hearted with his humor on the subject anime.

Your example statement is more attacking the person then on the subject ( dumb scarves like some dumb hipster). While the most hurtful thing I recall that Dan had said on the subject of anime most of the time is that its weird or "not for cool people".

It is like Jeff's hatred of Yoshi Island, its a running joke and not really malicious.

Also as a person who occasionally watch anime, anime is weird and dumb.

@ockman: Thanks for understanding. I feel slightly less insane that someone understands where i am coming from.

Anyway that's all i've got, i'm not going to hijack this QL thread any further.

Sorry for those whose feathers i ruffled, congrats to those that had a laugh at my expense (or think they did, whatever).

And thanks to everyone for being civil and not firing me down in a ball of flames for having an opinion.

I just wanted to add because i think it's weirdly funny in this whole thing, is that i really don't care for anime - I just like the last airbender. I know some people were trying to pigeonhole me as an anime megafan getting all upset. Personally it's just the intolerance i'm finding hard to deal with.

Ugh, it should never be that easy to delete your save in a game; I remember Brad doing a similar thing in the "I Am Alive" Quick Look a couple of years ago. I don't really get why all games don't just take the time to put in proper save management and flexibility with that stuff, on top of auto-saves.

Pretty much, which makes it pretty hilarious Jason accidentally deleted all his progress, because it's when you have everything unlocked that the combat really comes together IMO.

Also, all Platinum games are clearly designed with a heavy focus on replayability, in Bayonetta, MGR and this as well the first playthrough is essentially the tutorial.

I just don't understand Dan. Many children I knew and grew up with loved wrestling when they were younger, and then stopped watching when they got older and got different interests, yet I don't go around saying wrestling's for kids. Oh well, I'm sure Dan will mature one day.

@rowr - I think the thing you're missing here is that this is a personality driven website. The reason I watch and listen to everything here is because as ridiculous as it sounds the giantbomb crew occupies the same space in my head as my friends do. That's why it was heart breaking when Ryan passed away or why I actually miss hearing Vinny on the podcast. It's a bit illogical but that's why this site is as successful as it is.

Now with that being said in every group of friends there is internal mocking. It's harmless and sometimes it does cross a line, but everyone understands that no one in the group is actually trying to hurt anyone else. If they are, that's when you stop being friends with them.

Dan making fun of Anime "nerds" is funny because Dan is the biggest videogame/wrestling/what ever else nerd. But he isn't attacking you personally. When the guys give Brad crap for DOTA or when Jeff rants about Yoshi, they are not personally attacking anyone.

Keep watching your anime, just as long as it keeps you from that Lord of The Ring garbage - now that series is for real nerds.

@rowr: It's just that even bringing it up when talking about someone who just said that cartoons are for kids as a light joke to his friend who likes that stuff seems so out of all proportions. Like, this is the guy who admits that what he likes, wrestling, is dumb as fuck and nerdy as hell. So he makes fun of anime (but at the same time has said that he would probably like a lot of anime if he watched it) and cartoons on Nick aimed at children that can also be enjoyed by adults. So what?

@amyggen: I think Rowr posting was due to the culmination of Dan's generally dismissive attitude towards things he deems childish. I can relate. Dan's sarcasm is pretty subtle, if you don't pick up on it he seems like an ass. I thought he was for weeks until I realized how sarcastic he is being. Jeff's sarcasm is really easy to pick up on just because of the way that he changes his tone of speaking. I think a lot of people getting upset at Dan is just due to him not being great at portraying sarcasm.

@rowr:

I work in construction with a bunch of guys who barely know how to check email, and would flip me endless shit if I tried to talk games around them. Believe me I know the feeling. So I hang here.

But after growing up and working with people who get dirty and banged up at work to make things like comfortable environments for office workers, and roads and bridges for people to drive on, listening to Dan act like he's too cool for anime just seems cute. Like, it's adorable that the guy who has no qualms about playing video games for a living, and does yoga but thinks it's macho because the instructor renamed the positions, really thinks he's too cool for anime.

Anyway I wouldn't take anything Dan says too seriously, I really don't think he does. (BTW to be clear I'm not making fun of Dan's profession or hobbies. If I could make a living playing video games I would jump on that shit in a heartbeat)

Sorry Jason. Some of Dan's Chi illuminated your way.

Oh-oh..... the ending was funny, but I am sorry it happened. New game often does wipe out your previous saves. If it is any consolation, I cannot do fighting games at all. To watch you continuously saving the situation amazed me.

Seems like Platinum could have done more with Legend of Korra, but then it probably would not be $15:00

@amyggen

What i'm not getting is how the fact Dan is into wrestling should automatically trigger in my brain that nothing he says I should find upsetting? I could be missing some context for not natively being an American??? It's not obvious to me that Dan is trolling since it seems to be consistently 24/7 with the dismissive comment and attitude.
