"Another great thing about Bush being gone is it ends 12 years of fundamentalist Christians in the fucking white house, thank you God. Finally my prayer got through. I was on hold with that prayer for about 8 years with fucking Reagan. God help us. God are you there? Surely this is a really bad fucking joke God. This B-actor idiot fucking illiterate bozo-looking fuck can't be the president of the country can he God not really? Reach your hands down from the clouds and pinch my butt; make sure I'M NOT DREAMING. Finally my prayer got through."

@Animasta: Very true. They chose a good price point for the game. Stardock seems to usually be pretty decent about that sort of thing.

So all you do is look at what the people want and say whatever they want to hear? And then the game ends when you become presdent so you don't even have to do anything you promise?...yup sounds pretty realistic.

I really like the more playful than vicious satirical tone and some of the references seem quite funny but it really doesn't look like a very engrossing game at all. More like something you'll fuck around with for a few hours, chuckling and moving on. Which is actually pretty acceptable given how singular the attempt to create a game like this is - at least to my knowledge.

I believe this is the 3rd Political Machine game actually. The game's more about seeing if you can win elections from different approaches, particularly at higher difficulties. It's got more of a boardgame feel than anything I'd say. So yeah, you'd play for a few hours, and maybe come back to it later wanting to try a different candidate.

@XNaphryz: That makes sense! I knew there were games in the same franchise but haven't checked them out so far. I researched Stardock a bit back when Sins of a Solar Empire and Impulse and all those relatred headlines happened. Either way, it's interesting stuff.

@XNaphryz: There's also another game which is in roughly the same ballpark called Democracy 2, an older game by the developer of Gratuitous Space Battles. http://www.positech.co.uk/democracy2/

I played The Political Machine 2008, and it's basically a pretty shallow 4X game that gets by on charm and not much else. So basically like real elections.

Modern Democracy in a nutshell! As such this game is not just a simple video game but like a meta commentary on the state of our modern world. Kinda funny but also really scary :/

I'm not 'merican and what is electoral college. I guess I won't be getting this game.

Each state has a certain number of electoral votes attached to it, based on size and population (California has 55, New Jersey has 14, Montana has 3). So, in the 2012 election if Obama wins the majority vote in California, he gets 55 electoral votes. A candidate needs 270 votes to win.

The system certainly has its flaws. In the 2000 election, Al Gore actually won the popular vote but Bush got into office because he won the electoral college. It also leads to candidates only campaigning in the few major "swing states" (states with a lot of votes that vary between Republican and Democrat) like Florida. Nixon lost the 1960 election because he tried campaigning in all 50 states, unlike Kennedy who focused on the big ones.

This map on HuffPo might help sort this out: http://elections.huffingtonpost.com/2012/romney-vs-obama-electoral-map
