Or not, because it shows what someone might run into just popping the game in. "
Not quite, the game has a whole tutorial section that they skipped that explains it all.   Still a bad game though. "
Actually Sky Crawlers was very well received and received a great deal of hype because of it (the game was out for a while in Japan). "
The whole concept that someone can appreciate this game having played it myself seems beyond odd. The only way you can effectively play this game is to get in range of a enemy plane fill up the manoeuvre meter press A and hold Z to gun them down and go to the next plane and that around 30 or more times to complete a mission. Trying to take enemy planes out by simply dogfighting will only get you past the first few missions. If someone really wants to play it they should probably rent it and see for themselves before buying it.

So it's got a mix of WWII style prop fighters with a 1970s era missile Lock-on style HUD for targeting. . . that's just weird!

"For those wondering about Brad's question of this being set in real Europe instead of fictional Europe. He's kind of right, The Sky Crawlers actually takes place in alternate history Europe. I'm guessing this is based on the film, since it came out two years ago, but the basic premise is the world is at peace but to satiate the needs of a people used to nothing but warfare private corporations contract pilots to stage dog fights against each other regularly. It could also be based on the original novel series, which I assume shares a similar storyline.
@Hinamotto: Ya that's exactly what I was thinking watching this. "

That, and the pilots, in the movie and novels are genetically created humans that look like kids (Kildren) that don't age and are only used for said battles. When one dies they make another and send them to what ever company just lost a pilot.

I love how Ryan's idea of anime is solely Speed Racer, a show that was made over 40 years ago. Ignorance is bliss.

Lots of people enjoy the motion controls, that you can't grasp them/don't like them doesn't make your opinion fact to question why they like it. Maybe you should have rented it or tried it at the store to save yourself this grudge you seem to be holding trying to force it sucks on everyone.

@Al3xand3r: While that may be true, the fact that this game is made considerably more playable by using either a gamecube controller or a classic controller sort of negates that fact.

it's fine to like motion controls in certain situations, but during times where it hinders the gameplay of a title, it really needs to be stripped out at the development level. Also doesn't help that the motion controls for this particular game are SO much different than the usual Wii fare.

I get where they were trying to go...it just doesn't work that well.

looks a lot like the last Ace Combat but with lamer plans and on the Wii. I could use another full Ace Combat game with some kick ass fighter jets and some sweet missile and bombs.

I'll just wait for Ace Combat 7 on the 360. I prefer modern day planes to WWII planes and the Wii controls seems kind of bad.

Or Dragon Ball or Naruto - whatever's popular that caught his attention. It's hilarious how ignorant he is.

It's like if you were to judge video games based solely on Call of Duty. Man, that would suck.

So the planes are lame because they're vintage aircraft?

I'll admit, I didn't know what to think of the game before the Quick Look, but it looks better than I thought it would.  Also, Ryan's ignorance regarding anime is so absurd that his supposedly harsh jabs are rendered dull by his utter cluelessness.

I can't agree more that quick looks need to stay unrehearsed, and have the "live demo" feel. If it was actually rehearsed, that eliminates the whole point of the "pop the game in, experience the game as if you were playing it the first time as it was" sort of thing. Save the rehearsed stuff for the video reviews.

If it's anything like other Ace Combat games, I'm guessing if you can change the control scheme from basic or normal to the advanced setting, it include yaw and roll as separate things so you have full control of that, rather than the simplistic turning shown here.

I'm all for filming the first experience with the game but they skipped the whole (and insanely beefy (and boring)) tutorial section that comes before the Story missions. Every question they asked themselves during that quicklook was explained in those tutorials. The best quicklooks in my opinion on the site are the ones where one of the "quicklookers" played the game for a couple of hours and the other is playing it and asking questions about it since you get both the gut reaction and the factual information.

Yep pretty much, there is a option to turn of the flight assist. Playing with the flight assist on makes the game rather impossible after a couple of missions because you won't be able to keep up with the planes. It actually killed me a couple of times because it would try to level my plane when i was avoiding a cliff.

@dagas: In my opinion, the reason the Ace Combat games work is because you're flying in jets but engaging in WWII-style dogfights, getting right behind some Estovakian and blasting him to bits rather than firing a long-range missile as soon as AWACS knows the target exists.

Anime has sucked for a long time, and people into shitty anime are why other people hate anime and anime fans.  I long for the days of shows about robots, aliens, and dudes beating the shit out of each other, not sexualized adolescents with magic powers.  Anime is dead to those that remember how good it used to be.

Does look similar to Ace Combat. Also sounds very similar. He needs to lead better >.>

Man, even the after-mission-path screen is Ace Combat.

And to the people saying he was shooting at allies: No, the targets are Green in the Ace games, and it seems the similar here. It only turns red when you lock on with missiles (well, again, in the AC games). And he totally killed the random, non-mission-essential targets first. The targets with the red TGT next to them are the mission-specific ones. The green ones will just keep respawning.

I totally want Ace Combat 7 too. I loved 6 on the 360 (still play it a ton, too). I like modern planes a bit more, but I would definitely love a new Crimson Skies (Drunken Missile barrage plane was awesome).

Bahaha, the Predatory nature of Warfare chat was hilarious. "It was a double-entendre of Philosiphysing." "I think that's the Eagle that's narrating right now."

Yet,  you have a Golgo 13 avatar and username.

Anime isn't "dead."  As a medium, its popularity in the west may be waning, but that's not unlike any other number of fads that have come and gone.  It used to be that anime in the west was mostly watched by a certain demographic not unlike Trekkies or Star Wars nerds.  Then DBZ and a couple of other series became insanely popular on American TV and a trend of more casual western fandom rose up.  Now it's quieting back down, not to the level of pre-DBZ, but still, it is returning to its niche.

Not quite.

The game is based on The Sky Crawlers movie that was released in Japan, which itself was based on a novel (not a manga, or graphic novel, an actual novel).  Here's the movie's premise from the Wikipedia page:

The Sky Crawlers is set in an alternate history where, although the world is at peace, in order to ease the tension of a populace accustomed to war and aggression, private corporations contract fighter pilots to stage combat operations against each other for show. The film introduces a mystery involving characters called Kildren ( キルドレ , Kirudore}[{could also be translated into "kill-dolls" ), humanoids genetically designed to live eternally in adolescence until shot down in air battles presented commercially for entertainment, after which they are reproduced.

Nope and I really don't want to.  Ace Combat 6 was a disappointment (worse than 4, 5, and 6) and this just looks to further the fact that Namco Bandai has no idea what they're doing this generation.  I've seen some other gameplay and it just looks boring and those cutscenes are just bad bad bad.

I can't think of the last arcadey flight game that was actually decent.  AC6 was bad, Blazing Angels is terrible, HAWX was a mess, and...uh...that's it?

My thoughts exactly. I bought this game because Project Aces developed it but it's a striped version of an ace combat game. it has the same HUD and GUI but bad controls and graphics. The the story sucks too because it's based on a dumb movie.

I've never liked these flight combat games. Shooting dots in the sky has always bored me.

Yeah, the movie was good.  This doesn't look like it expands on any of the story though. It really does seem like just another air combat game, and that doesn't interest me at all. "
The movie wasn't that great and I wanted to like it since I'm a fan of Mamoru Oshii. I thought this would be the last Anime to be made into game. Honestly, I don't see how even the most zealous fans of The Sky Crawlers would want to play an Ace Combat style game about it. What a horrible idea...
